Because none of the Captain Marvels are particularly noticeable but Carol happens to have a very vocal fanbase that pushed for her to get a movie. Kevin Feige has stated that Black Panther and Captain Marvel were the two most requested new properties of Phase 3.

Plus no offense but it's not like the MCU has a lack of dudes.

Especially with Thanos as the big bad. I know they want female Heros, but god damn, using Carol as Cap is such a missed opportunity. Mar-Vell and Warlock both have histories with Thanos

That means nothing. These movies are aimed at a mass audience who has never heard of either one, so who is "THE" iconic version doesn't matter.

Marvel realizes this which is why they were fine with not using Hank Pym or the original Guardians of the Galaxy before doing the more recent versions.

I imagine Mar-Vell is still gonna play a major role in the Captain Marvel movie even if he isn't the main character. Because Carol obviously has to get the Captain Marvel name from somewhere (and they are probably not gonna change her backstory and make her a Kree) so an Obi-Wan type role for him is likely, which would still give him the respect and gravitas he deserves (and needs if Carol calling herself Captain Marvel is gonna mean anything).

I hope the cast becomes a little more diverse. It currently has 18 men (11 of which are white, 3 are black, and one robot and one alien and 2 nonhumans (Groot and Rocket) that are male) and 4 women (3 white and 1 alien) with the possibility of 3 more (2 white, Jessica Jones and Wasp and one Asian, Quake). All of whom are straight.

I think there's a good chance we'll get Phlya-Vell or Moondragon in Guardians 2. And hey with the Asian box office being so huge I can't imagine Marvel isn't gonna bring an Asian hero into the MCU sooner or later (White Fox? Shang-Chi? Radiance?)

So, people are upset about Captain Marvel being Carol Danvers and not that one dude who died of cancer way back in the 80s or something? How does that make any sense? The original Captain Marvel isn't relevant at all to the current generation of comic book readers except for explaining how Carol Danvers got her powers.

This is certainly a likely possibility, but its entirely possible they may explain her origin story another way entirely. Who knows. Mar-Vell could be her father, and she takes up the mantle after he dies. It could be similar to the Peter Quill origin story, but instead she actually does get taken to her father.
