The Honduran Coup

Deal may return Zelaya to Power

TEGUCIGALPA. Honduran negotiators have reached agreement on ending a political crisis triggered by President Manuel Zelaya's ouster in a June coup.
''We have agreed in a document on point No. 6, which relates to the restitution of the powers of state to where they were before June 28, 2009,'' Mr Zelaya's representative said.

Restoring the state to the situation before the coup would imply Mr Zelaya's return to office, which had been opposed by Robert Micheletti, the head of the coup-backed interim government.

Mr Micheletti and Mr Zelaya must now ratify the agreement reached by their representatives.

I think the deal would be to return him to power but he wouldn't be allowed to run for office again under the terms of the original and present constitution.

I saw no problem with that deal, and I believe it was given to him. I don't think he took it before......hence the problem......strange that he is taking it now.

I think its absurd to give him another term. Zelaya's term limits were up. Why give him another one? Because him and 12 % of the population threw a hissy fit? I wonder what influence our state department had on this.

Isn't the deal for him to finish his term not give him another term.

I think the deal will only put him in power until the term he was serving is up which is only a matter of months.

The problem is, he was going to try and pull a Chavez before.....what makes them think he's going to play nice this time? Why would anyone believe that all he wants to do is finish out his term......?

I think simply because there would be too many people paying attention this time and there won't be a referendum to expand his term limits. If Zelaya reneged on his part of the deal, it wouldn't be tolerated.

Unless he somehow gets the backing of the military.....and stranger things have happened.

I'd just say **** the outside influence and stick by what the majority of the people want.....

He doesn't have military backing. The military sided with the courts and legislature during his ousting.

I trust any military or governments in that region....it can change overnight.

I doubt that will happen on account that Honduras' political, judicial, and military leaders for the time being actually seem dedicated on preventing another dictatorship happen. They all seem vehemently opposed to Zelaya and would most likely not give him their support in a few short months.

In order for that to happen, you would need to do what Hugo Chavez did which was gradually replace figures in the courts and military with loyalists and make your political party focused on you. Both of Hugo Chavez's parties were founded by him and focused on him while the Liberal Party in Honduras was founded way before Zelaya was even born which is a huge hindrance to that idea.

Also to take over Chavez style, things take time in which Chavez had two terms to do so. Zelaya just had one. He was also incredibly unpopular while Chavez while having significant opposition, he is still relatively popular (like Barack Obama).

ooops.....thanks for reading into my post. I forgot a small, little, word....."don't" as in "I don't trust...." major game changer there. lol

Honduras leader's nephew killed

The nephew of the interim President of Honduras Roberto Micheletti has been found dead in what the police are calling an execution-style killing.
Enzo Micheletti's body was discovered on Sunday in woodland near Choloma, 250 km north of the capital, Tegucigalpa.

Police say his hands were tied behind his back and his body was riddled with bullets.

There is no indication that his death is connected to the coup that brought his uncle to power at the end of June.

The 24-year-old's body was discovered on Sunday two days after he had been reported missing.

The body of another unidentified man was found nearby.

Mr Micheletti came to power after President Manuel Zelaya was ousted in June after trying to hold a vote on whether a constituent assembly should be set up to look at rewriting the constitution.

He wants to be reinstated before 29 November elections, but the interim leaders have resisted his demands.

They say Mr Zelaya was legally removed from office as he had violated the Honduran constitution.

It is not thought that the interim leader's nephew was involved in politics, but Honduras has the highest murder rate in Central America - much of it drug related.

Last year more than 7,000 people were killed.

Despite what the end of the article says I still wonder if this was politically motivated.
