The Horror Thread - Part 1

In addition to my October 2013 Halloween horror line-up that I posted earlier, for the month of September I've been having an X-Files Marathon during the week, and on the weekends I'm having a John Carpenter movie marathon. It's been really fun!

Sounds fun!

I saw the first "episode" of V/H/S/ and it was kinda freaky. Then I saw parts of another "episode" and the person is watching them sleep or something, then she starts stabbing the guy in his sleep. It was kinda too graphic for my tastes.

I only saw the original Blob for the first time late last year. Found it to be a fantastic film, had to get the Criterion of it because of that. Such a good watch. Might kick off October with that

Went to a midnight show of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 last night. Damn is that a bizarre movie. There are some obvious moments of parody and such but really the movie is legitimately disturbing at times.

Also, I really hope Tobe Hooper received some kind of royalty from whatever money House of 1000 Corpses made. The influence of the first TCM film was always obvious, but quite honestly Zombie's film is pretty much a direct ripoff of TCM2 by way of the Natural Born Killer's editing bay. This is made even more obvious by the presence of Bill Mosely in both films.

Was this your first time seeing TCM2? It's always been common knowledge that Zombie flat out ripped off TCM with Hous of a thousand Corpses, to be honest the man ripped off a lot of popular horror in his films.

Yeah I had never seen TCM2, and while its always been obvious that House of 1000 corpses was really derivative, I didn't realize the extent it took from a single film.

Yeah if it was your first viewing I'm sure your immediately noticed how much of an "homage" House was with TCM2 in mind. I love TCM2 and I think it's one of the best most imaginative and different horror sequels from any popular franchise, it went so out of the box it's fantastic.

I honestly can't wait to start seeing reviews for the new 35th Anniversary Halloween blu-ray.

To be fair, the Blob is nothing more than an over-glorified B-film.

I must admit, I actually kinda like the remake. It was surprisingly creepy, with better than expected VFX. Although I do think the original's keeping the blobs origins a mystery was the better ending, rather than it being a military experiment gone wrong.

It's amazing how someone with a name like "Rob Zombie" can make such s#!tty horror movies.

In the middle of watching The Seasoning House, about a sex slavery house catering to soldiers during the civil wars in the Balkans.

I can not review this movie without referring back to the very last Horror movie I watched...I Spit On Your Grave 2. There are some similarities but unlike the incredibly lazy ISOYG sequel, it actually tells it's own story rather than beat for beat retelling a movie I've already seen. This is what the ISOYG franchise could be if they dared to think outside the box and try new things within the confines of their gimmick.

Angel is a deaf/mute orphan who has been forced to work at the house, but not as a sex slave. Her job is to get the slaves ready for new customers by drugging them and applying make-up, then cleaning them up afterward. This is bleak stuff, despite not showing a single bit of female nudity or torture type stuff like ISOYG2 did.

The lead actress Rosie Day never says a word in the film, but is great anyway. It's apparently her first movie role (after plenty of tv), so I can't wait to see more from her.

I want to note that around 2/3 of the way through the movie, I stopped the film and wrote the above...then I pressed play again...and...unfortunately have to now write this part.

Ugh...once the "action" in the third act starts, it started to become much more cliche, and I lost interest as my eyes were too busy rolling to focus on the screen. Such a shame that it took so many cheap ways out after that powerful build. Really, really disappointed by that third act. I tend to adjust my movie rankings as my memory of films change throughout the year...but this one will just keep falling down my rankings because that crappy last third is going to be what sticks in my memory.

^ Good times.

I saw it two years ago in St. Louis at a presentation where the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra played the score live. It was fantastic.

I was really surprised by how many people in the audience, which had really wide age range, had apparently never seen the movie.

It still elicits a lot of shock, though also some nervous laughter. Certain lines and things have just so long been a part of the zeit geist.

Victor Miller is attending Monster Con in San Antonio this year and I plan to meet him.

:wow:

Please elaborate!
It's available for pre-order, it will have a brand new transfer supervised by the man himself Dean Cundey (Halloween Cinematographer), with a brand new commentary track with both John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Supposedly this new transfer will attempt to keep the blueish hue that the original film has but the first blu-ray transfer seemed to wash out a little bit.

Yeah it's amazing, and I actually do have the previous blu-ray which IS NOT a bad transfer but while doing it they did lose some of the look of the original film and color tones, which I have faith Cundey will fix this time around, I hope the reviews will be good.

I am looking forward to the transfer and essay by my friend, Stef Hutchinson. On a disconnected note, is anyone going to the 35 Anniversary convention? If so, do take & post some pictures; I'd love to go, but cannot afford to do so.

It sucks to think I've never actually gone to a real convention before, I live in Upstate NY so unless it's in NYC I don't have any option other than to travel across the country most of the time, someday I hope I'll go to one.

Sadly, it is on the West Coast.

But, you are close to one of the convention capitals of the US: NYC. One of my goals is to attend an NYC Comic-Con before the end of Phase 2 of the MCU.
