The Horror Thread - Part 1

Shaking my head. I went and looked up the movie too. Any serious suggestions?

While this looks and sounds like a nightmare I'm not sure if it counts as horror.

It's got me terrified.

I watched a part of Gooby. What an awful thing that was.

Anyone seen Terror Train with Jamie Lee Curtis? I grabbed the Scream! Deluxe Blu Ray.

Just watched World War Z, which is more action film than Horror.

A lot of people like this movie...and I have to credit that with the idea that we all thought it would be atrocious, and it turned out just run of the mill. It's basically Brad Pitt racing to an airlift, then racing to another, then another. In fact, at least a few of those trips could have been avoided with a simple phone call. Luck plays a massive role in the his successes. Besides, I hate the idea of zombies being super-strong and fast. It's okay, looks fairly expensive.

I don't get why this movie gets such a bad rap. It definitely had horror in it. Pitt's best performance in years.

I tried reading the novel but became bored after 20 pages...it is one of the few books that I lost interest in, while reading. I am not saying it is bad, but, it was not appealing to me.

I rarely watch Brad Pitt movies, so Im not sure how good his recent acting has been. I just know that...yeah, it had Horror elements, it's a zombie movie...but it felt a bit too much like a soulless tentpole blockbuster action film to me. Like I said...it isn't BAD...just average. That isn't reason for me to celebrate its achievement, given that it had massive studio money behind it. With all of that money and no limits to the talent it could purchase, I expect more than run of the mill, especially when the best movies I see tend to be films that never even reach theaters and are made by nobodies on a shoestring budget.

Brad Pitt actually isn't really that much of a box office draw. Never has been. WWZ is his biggest hit, followed by the Oceans movies (which hardly count, because you've got George Clooney and Matt Damon too). I'd hardly call him a "star" beyond the fact that he's attractive.

The only movie of his that I really like is Burn After Reading...partly because he played a burnout in it.

He's one of the top 25 grossing actors of all time. To call him "not a draw" is just not true.

What is he - #24? :funny:

(I know this is not the thread for this, but I'm honestly not impressed with him. To each his own.)

I liked World War Z which is basically contagion meets 28 Days/Weeks Later with a higher budget.

Because you're not impressed with him means he's not a draw?

Actually, he is 24 and ahead of Liam Neeson (34) Mel Gibson (45), Leonardo DiCaprio (35) and several other notables but it's not adjusted for inflation so your box office draw may vary.

He's a great actor in a lame movie. IMO the only thing that this movie had going for it is that its on a worldly scale compared to other zombie movies.

Take that out and its not even at a Land of the Dead level.

Has anyone seen Tomb of the Blind Dead? I was thinking about buying the coffin set but wasn't sure if its as good as it seems. Plus Hammers version of The Mummy comes out on BluRay in OCT. One of my all time favorites that I can't wait for.

I really didn't even like the concept of globe-trotting. It seemed like he and his wife own the only communication devices left on earth. He really could have just stayed at home and made some phone calls, since these other governments were so willing to share info.

Also...Pitt counted to 12 a few times to make sure that the person didn't have the virus...yet there were a few instances where it took hours to turn into a zombie.

Agreed. I highly disliked the book. It had passages of goodness but on a whole it was dry and rather horribly paced. Day By Day Armageddon is the best zombie novel I've ever read and it shares some surface similarities to World War Z. I hope to hell that gets adapted.

As for World War Z the film-I thought it was a hell of a lot better than it had the right to be. I was pretty much against it from the get go because the trailers were so bunk. But it got some good reviews and word of mouth so I went to see it and was really surprised. The CGI didn't look as crappy as it did in the trailers and aside from a bit too much fast editing it was a very well made, intense thriller. The cast was uniformly great and it's scale is something I'd love to see in more zombie films. The unrated cut also adds the much needed gore that was missing in theaters. Not all horror films need gore, but there is something about a zombie film that just intrinsically calls for it, imo.

Agreed x1,000 :hrt:

I'm planning on having a Buffy Marathon for Halloween this year. I've already started last night by watching the 1992 movie. In the morning when I get home from work I'll start in on the TV series with Season 1: Disc 1.

I'm also going to be watching a horror movie every day until Halloween. On Halloween night (assuming I don't get assigned to work anywhere that night) I'm going to watch The Halloween Trilogy (John Carpenter's Halloween: Extended Cut, Halloween 2, and Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later). That's been my tradition on Halloween night for years, watching those three movies. I've already got my apartment all decorated for Halloween. It's too bad Spirit Halloween isn't selling those motion activated Halloween & Nightmare On Elm Street door covers anymore. I really wanted to buy one this year.

Need horror movies for tonight. I rented The Shining(the book) to read. I need a terrifying movie to watch. Suggestions please.

How about Wrestlemaniac? It stars Rey Mysterio (the original, not his high flying nephew in the WWE, that's Rey Jr) as a mad luchadore who kills people by ripping their faces off.

To me it's pretty much your standard slasher movie fare, but my best friend couldn't watch the whole thing through because he found it too scary. So it all depends on your point of view as to how scary it is.

By the way, there's also a cameo appearance by the actor who played Crazy Ralph in Friday The 13th Parts 1 & 2.

I just looked it up, now I remember. I saw that version on TV once. Never saw it since.

Misterio. Not Mysterio. That's the Americanized name. Misterio Sr. has also groomed a new Misterio Jr. in Mexico, as well.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.
