The Horror Thread - Part 1

I liked Creep. I have not seen the move in years though.

The Creep was played by Sean Harris who also played Fifeild in Prometheus in which he also wore a ton of make up when he got mutated.

Nice suggestions, but the "flaws" in the film are what is so appealing to me. I love the excessive kills. What else do you really watch a Friday film for? I love how half the victims were simply introduced to be killed. I love the coked out and subversive tone, I love the sleaze, I love the whacky humor, I love how purely 80s it is. At times it reminds me of a Troma movie without the excessive gore. It just has that out there tone to it. It has more personality than many of the other entries in the series, and that's why it stands out to me whereas part 4 is just bland. It has awesome kills and I like Feldman as Tommy but other than that it's just bleh. The teens are as boring as boring can get. Crispin Glover doing silly dance isn't enough for me, sorry. These films aren't known for their wonderful characters but in most of them they at least have one or two people you can root for or characters that are entertaining in the "HA, their funny" or "Ha, I want them to die!" way. In part 4 I just didn't care.

I get what you're saying, but I think a Friday film should at least make an attempt to be scary. Have some comic relief, sure, but don't over do it. The director of The New Blood said that he equated the death scenes in his movie with jokes, and the deaths themselves were the punchlines, then the MPAA wouldn't let let him give the punchline. I found A New Beginning had the opposite problem, that it was full of punchlines, but the jokes leading up to them weren't being told.

The first three Friday films took the time to develop some nice tension and suspence. The Final Chapter was the first movie in the franchise to begin to put more bodies into the film in place of suspence. And then A New Beginning took it even further. Then it became the trend to make the next Friday film with an even larger body count than the last. Which for me does not make for a better movie.

And I too, get what you're saying. I agree that the first 3 Friday films did exactly what you described but the 4th just feels bland with my aforementioned boring and wooden characters. The comedic, somewhat wink-wink nature of the 5th and 6th are a breath of fresh air after the rather serious tone of the first 4.

I watched F13, the other day. Now I'm watching Part 2. I really don't like F13 that much to be honest. The final 30 minutes or so is good, but the first hour is pretty boring IMO.

HERESY!!! Just kidding :oldrazz: each to their own, I overdo ally love every minute of Friday the 13th but the second one is better in my opinion.

As well made as the first F13 is that's my least favorite film of the whole series, it takes a while to get things moving but I like that because it shows that back then films built up suspense much longer before just throwing us under the bus.

The first F13, while certainly a classic, almost feels like a shoddier version of Halloween with a "twist" at the end. But it lacks the suspense and sense of dread that Halloween is known for. You can tell they were influenced by Halloween and the idea of a "slasher film", but wanted to avoid the idea of a masked killer...until they completely threw that out the door and gave us a masked killer (Jason) in F13 Part 2.

I always wonder how "thrown together" the hockey mask was, everyone makes it seem like in 3 it was just some random idea that popped up but I tend to think it may have been somewhat planned for some time prior to that.

I do think overall Friday the 13th is a pretty interesting franchise.

It didn't really feature it's key killer until the second film, it didn't develop the iconic look of said killer until the third film, it attempted to have a copycat killer in the fifth film, then it resurrected the killer into a glorified mystical zombie creature in the sixth film, really didn't feature the killer in it's ninth film (while Halloween did do this for it's third film, F13 Part 9 was still in the continuity of a Jason film), and then it sent it's killer into space in the tenth film. That's pretty damn impressive for a franchise to do this.

Wow. Did someone just say they enjoyed The Strangers? If that is the movie, I'm thinking of with Liv Tyler that was awful. All she did was scream for 90 minutes.

Here's my idea for this year. I want to do the first 26 days of Oct. in an alphabetical order phase. Below I've listed my choices but, as you can see, some letters have multiple titles. These extra choices will make up my Halloween programing for the final 5 days of the month. Can anyone help me on my alphabetical quest?

Well here's my list:

A - Alien, Abominable Dr. Phibes
B - Bride of Frankenstein, Blair Witch Project
C - Creature from the Black Lagoon
D - Dracula (aka Horror of Dracula) little cheat, but that's it's official Hammer title!
E - Evil Dead 2
F - Fright Night (original)
G - The Gorgon
H - Horror Hotel/House of Frankenstein/House on Haunted Hill (remake)/Hellraiser/Halloween (original)
I - Invisible Man/It!The Terror from Beyond Space
J - Jeepers Creepers
K - King Kong
L - Lair of the White Worm/ Let Me In
M - The Mummy (1999)/ Monster Squad
N - A Nightmare on Elm Street (original)/Night of the Living Dead (original)/Nightbreed
O - The Omen (original)
P - Pit and the Pendulum/Phantom of the Opera (Lon Chaney)
Q - Q (the big serpent movie)
R - Return of the Vampire (gotta have some Lugosi), Return of the Living Dead, The Ring
S - Son of Frankenstein/Silence of the Lambs/Se7en
T - Tales from the Crypt/The Thing (original and Carpenter versions)
U - The Undead
V - Vampire Lovers/Van Helsing
W - The Wolf Man/Wrong Turn
X - X The Man with the X-Ray Eyes
Y - Young Frankenstein
Z - Zombie

It's almost October, so can anyone give me some suggestions?

Horror rules!!!Lol

Only if it's more like the sequel and less like the first one.

I just prefer my horror films to be more serious. A little comic relief is okay (Ned, Scott, Shelly, Jimbo) but Part 5 & 6 went a little overboard in my opinion.

Well it it's likely would be, when they revealed what the Creeper was at the end if the first film they opened that door where you can't go back. He can't be hidden in the shadows with people thinking he's an ordinary man because he's not. Personally I think the first film is one of the best horror films ever but the sequel is just your typical fun slasher that I also like. However, the effectiveness has now gone much like other horror franchise when you hit the sequel.

I'd like a 3rd Jeepers Creepers for sure. I'm damn sick of these ****** haunting and torture porn movies we keep getting over and over. I want some more horror in the vain of Friday the 13th and a Halloween film released at a Halloween among other things.

I've been asking for that for years now. A fan of those films, the character design looked great. Can definitely squeeze one more movie out of the franchise.

There was a whole debate on the first movie compared to the second somewhere. What it came down to was I thought Justin Long's character was a total moron and asked to get killed. The sequel was at least people trying to live.

Yeah definitely, in done respects though it's nice they haven't tried to milk the franchise until there's nothing left. To have the series. (If we can even call it that) with a superb first film and a very good sequel is pretty neat.

Anyone else want to see another Jeepers Creepers?

I'd love it. I saw the first one in the theater with no preconceived idea of what it was about (literally just walked in blind), and I was shockingly surprised. I could not fathom that [BLACKOUT]The Creeper would randomly have wings popping out of his body like that.[/BLACKOUT] It was the one of the nicest "WTF" experiences of my life.

What are your thoughts on The Mothman Prophecies?

- A classic.
- One of the most thought provoking films ever.
- One of the few movies that genuinely disturbed me.
- Gere's best performance ever.
- Exceptional atmosphere.
- An amazing score/soundtrack. I own it.
- Haunted me for weeks.

The guy who directed this is Mark Pellington. He also directed Arlington Road with Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins. If you've never seen that, SEE IT. It is very similar in atmosphere, and it's another film that really gets under my skin and haunts me. I go to sleep thinking about it.

I think The Strangers is one of the best home invasion/slasher films of the last ten years I haven't felt suspense like that from any modern slasher film in a long long time.

As far as a third Jeepers Creepers I am a HUGE fan of the first film, I think it's a modern horror classic but the second was so bad it made me not really feel we need a third unless the right creative team got behind it, if so bring it on.

Finally got my copy of Crystal Lake Memories and I'm super psyched to start watching all 6 hours tonight, or whatever I can get through.

Totally agreed. One of my favorites. I saw that in the theater with an amazing audience opening night. They were so well-behaved and quiet, and when the scares occurred, they genuinely screamed because they couldn't help it. It was such a real, honest reaction from a crowd. Nobody was trying to be cool or be a class clown. Probably one of the best experiences I've had in a theater with an audience.

For some reason, when I see Horror movies in the theater, the crowd I'm with always "informs" me of whether it's going to be a classic or just a genuinely great Horror film. 99% of the time I can't get scared, so the audience sort of makes up my mind, lol.
