The Horror Thread - Part 2

Can we never mention Diary of the Dead again? Horrible movie. Refuse to even watch Survival of the Dead because of it. As far as I'm concerned, the story ended with Land.

They did. Diary was in another continuity because it starts at the beginning of the apocalypse in 2005 or so instead of the 60's. Don't know when Survival takes place, but it wasn't found footage, and it also wasn't very good. It was essentially Hatfield's/McCoy's with zombies.

I just added some movies to my Netflix queue. Some I haven't ever seen (like Hatchet 2) and some I haven't seen in YEARS (like Pumpkinhead).

Survival is a direct follow up to Diary and features soldier characters that originally appeared in Diary.

I'm not totally against the found footage myself simply because the movie series probably needs to try something else in the modern day that doesn't involve Jason going to Manhattan or Outer Space. However, as some have said how the hell would it even work? You can't really have a dozen cameras or one person filming the whole thing. I think if they do want to do found footage maybe just have a part of the movie filmed that way like when they did the Game Mode scene in Doom or something.

If they're insistent on it then they'll find a way to do it but I'd rather they just did another entry that will most likely be in 3D.

Whatever they choose to do just please get Derek Mears back.

F13 set in the winter could be great. Frozen lake/Hockey reiteration of young jason jumping out of the lake. It would be amazing.

Didn't the most current rumor about a F13 sequel involve Corey Feldman returning as Tommy Jarvis? I thought the found footage stuff was old news. Maybe I have my rumors mixed up, though.

I saw the news posted just a few days ago on Bloody Disgusting that the studio is still looking for a found footage script.

I've seen the numbers. I can accept that they both made money...so from the standard of them being PROFITABLE...okay...yeah. But these studios think in terms of money. We are seeing them rush out sequels to Horror films on a yearly basis with no regard to the overcrowded market...and SOMETHING kept them from wanting to make more slasher films. It will always come down to money for them. If they thought the money would come, we'd have more movement on these projects.

I'll add that...yeah, Friday had rights issues that were just recently cleared up, which likely stalled that.

Yeah and that something as we know it was many things, same with Nightmare. They had other irons in the fire WBs make multiple films a year and constantly drop things. Hence why Friday reverted back to Paramount. If they were at another studio they'd gave had sequels out sooner. Not to mention Platinum Dunes wanting to make the Turtles.

But we're being flooded with so many Horror films that they are now being released in the Summer. Horror is HOT right now. Yet they have other irons in the fire that they are choosing over the slasher icons. It is because of money that these decisions are made. The studios are not intentionally making less money just to make ghost movies. They are seeing more profit with the current trend than they did with slashers.

No but the other studios don't have the films WBs have on their slate do they? It us to do with money but WBs aren't interested in the films that have low budget, with a triple return. They want to name the movies that make back 800 mil to a billion. Look at what's happening now Paramount have the rights back to Friday the 13th so they're wanting to make it cause they know what they'll get from it. Proof that Friday at another studio gets another film. It's the studio it was at that's the problem.

Same here.

I found Land to be enjoyable but not up to par with his first three zombie films.

I just watched Carpenter's Prince of Darkness last night(haven't seen it since I was real young)and really liked it. When I was younger I found the movie to be boring for some reason, but now that I'm older I found the pacing to be pretty good. I love how a lot of Carpenter's films are finally coming out on Blu-ray. Body Bags and In the Mouth of Madness are going to be out in the next few months.

Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness are some of my favorite Carpenter films!

I'll have to rewatch Prince of Darkness. I don't remember it too fondly but that was from several years ago.

Land/Diary/Survival is one trilogy, and is separate from Night/Dawn/Day.

Survival is actually pretty underrated.
Diary isn't so great.
Land is good, but I think people give it a little bit too much credit.

Basically, Survival is my favorite of the three.

Land of the Dead was great for one reason... Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright cameos.

The only thing about that is, we probably wouldn't have known it was them unless we knew it was them ahead time... so it kind of loses its "awesome factor" for me. It could've just been any two random dudes. I would've loved it if they were clearly themselves with no make-up, and they played survivors who crossed paths with the other survivors for a brief moment.

Having said this, the biggest, most WTF-random cameo of all time is Jay and Silent Bob in Scream 3. To this goddamn day, I don't know WHAT Wes Craven was thinking.

Chucky is a slasher icon...straight to video reboot. If they thought money could be made in theaters, it would be in theaters.

F13 was sent back to Paramount as part of a deal to to buy into Chris Nolan's next film.

To be honest, their cameos didn't really stand out in that movie. The whole thing seemed like a parody of itself.

You are mistaken, Land has nothing to do with Diary and Survival. Diary was a reboot taking everything back to first night.

I've never seen In the Mouth of Madness. Good to know its getting released on Blu-ray.

Yeah, Scream 3 was pretty bad from what I remember (which isn't all that much, it wasn't a very memorable movie). Scream 4 was a lot better, but the ending took me out of it.

I've seen a report they want to do a Scream 5 to end the franchise. At the same time the television series would be unconnected and have a more supernatural element but it's just talk at this point.

what's left to do besides make Sidney into the new Ghostface?

personally, i think they should have let Jill get away with killing everyone and ended it there.

The icons will be back in full force just as soon as they prove as profitable as the stuff that is out now.

The budget for the iconic characters from big studios is far greater than your average ghost movie. The studio could make The Purge and TEN sequels for LESS money than it took to make just the Nightmare on Elm Street reboot film.

And when you look at the all time domestic box office...the slasher icons don't even show up in the top 20. It is a higher cost, smaller fanbase.

i figure that they'll focus on rebooting the Universal Monsters, first. they already have the Wolfman and the Mummy out there.

Wes Craven said in the Director's Commentary of Scream 4 that he had Jill get shot in the chest (instead of the head like the other killers) as a away of potentially bringing her back. That's also why we never actually saw Hayden Panettiere's character die or the Police find her body.
