The Horror Thread - Part 2

So Figs are you saying that I'm not well versed in the horror genre because I think Scream is one of the best slasher films of all time?

I've seen above and beyond more horror films to date than anyone I know and have been an avid fan since I was a young early pre-teen. I've watched all genres of horror but that doesn't make Scream any less of a great film, the fact that I've seen so much bad horror (because let's face it 80% of modern day horror is horrible) makes Scream all that much better of a film in comparison.

Well, I do agree with you that roughly 80% of modern day horror films have been either disappointments or flat out terrible.

I'll post again that I do think the original Scream is one of the best slasher films, but I heavily disagree that it's one of the best overall "horror related films".

Ok fair enough I can totally respect what you're saying, and see where you're coming from so on that note what slasher film do YOU think is the best of all time?

Who here on these boards agree that...

The Fly (1986) and The Thing (1982) are the two best horror films of the new generation.

Good god, those films are cinematical masterpieces.

i'd easily agree. i only know of the originals because of their reenvisionings. one of the few times that a director got it right. brundlefly

The Thing is easily my favorite horror film (although this year Maniac came close to topping it). The artistry of that film alone makes it one of the best. I'm going to try and see a midnight viewing of it in over a week, or I would have watched it as part of my 31 Days of Halloween Catchup today.

Probably should upgrade that to BD soon. How does it look in HD?

The best? As in number 1? Hard to say, but I did agree with you earlier that Scream is definitely One of the best slashers.

Some of my favorites are, the original Halloween, Psycho, and I really like Argento's Tenebre. Tenebre being a slasher is debatable to some, but I've always placed it in that group.

Ok so I didn't finish it the other day but today I finished the film Resolution. I know someone here has seen it, can anyone offer thoughts over exactly what was going on at the end?
It seemed like something was guiding the main character, and them wanted to help, but them we had cultists and escaped mental patients and other stuff going on. And then the ending came and I just ended up really confused.

For me The Mist is my favorite horror film, It combines many elements that I love in horror put into one film. The Thing is easily my number 2 favorite.

Playing catch up today with my day off on my 31 Days of Halloween marathon. So far, watched Gremlins and Evil Dead II. Now on to Jason X.

The list for the month so far:

1. Island of Lost Souls
2. Stage Fright (Aquarius)
3. Drive In Massacre/Zombieland
4. Stir of Echoes/Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
5. Pontypool/Superstition '82
6. Halloween '78/Halloween II '81
7. Halloween III: Season of the Witch
8. Dance of the Dead
9. Earnest Scared Stupid
10. Dracula: Dead and Loving It
11. Killer Klowns From Outer Space
12. Cabin In The Woods
13. Man-Thing
14. Poltergeist
15. The Descent
16. Re-Animator
17. Gremlins
18. Evil Dead II

I hope to be near close to caught up by Sunday, because I plan on ending the season with Eraserhead on the 31st, and I want to keep that. Still need to find space for The Blob and NoES. Since those were the only 3 I made promises to watch this season and haven't yet.

Same for me, Kane. You're talking about Carpenter's The Thing, right? My top three horror films are:

The Mist, The Thing, Silent Hill. I've not played the videogames; I just thought the movie was great. Curse of the Demon tends to work its way into the ranking, deposing Silent Hill from time to time.

Yeah, that's pretty awesome. I saw the original film for the first time last week.

SO STOKED!!!!

Clive Barker and Doug Bradley return for the Hellraiser remake!!!!

http://bloody-disgusting.com/news/3261369/dear-hellraiser-fans-clive-barker-is-writing-the-remake/

The first film is one of my favorite horror movies so I've never been too keen on a remake. I'll be opened minded about this one only because Barker and Bradley are involved.

I was happy to read this as well...

Well, it will not be a film awash with CGI. I remain as passionate about the power of practical make-up effects as I was when I wrote and directed the first ‘Hellraiser’. Of course the best make-up in the world loses force if not inhabited by a first-rate actor. I told the Dimension team that in my opinion there could never be a Pinhead without Doug Bradley.

Really what would the point of this remake be? Besides the rotoscoping in the film's ending, I don't really see what could be improved.

More pins on his head, you fool.

Other than that...basically just an excuse to kick the franchise back into gear...which I agree isn't really necessary...you could just do a new big budget film and release it to theaters without the baggage of the earlier movies, but not flat out saying that those movies never happened.

I'm pretty optimistic about Barker doing the script and Doug Bradley coming back, if they're going to remake it those two are essential IMO.

Just got back from seeing Night of the Living Dead on the big screen. The problem was that it was the guys from Mystery Science Theater ad libbing over it.

I guess you either get that sense of humor or you don't. I just don't and I'm pretty pissed that I blindly went thinking it was Night of the Living Dead.

Can someone answer a question? Why do we see Night and Day on TV but never the original Dawn?

Oh yeah, NotLD Rifftrax was tonight. Meh, had no interest in seeing that. Pissed I did miss Manos, though.

Catching up has been fun.

20. MOLD!

Trying to get 1 or 2 more in tonight. Really want to be caught up by the weekend. Gotta end the season with Eraserhead on Halloween. Glad I skipped TNA for this.

Actually I've never seen Day on TV. As for dawn, its very possible the Snyder remake pulls better ratings on TV as I see that one shown pretty often. There's also so many cuts of the original that the rights issues may also be a nightmare where as Night is public domain.

Also, with the Rifftracks crap, I think movie riffing, other than a few comments here and there, as the primary intent while watching a movie is pretty much always terrible. I've never known of anyone who was good at it. So often the riffers just end up reaching for any possible excuse to make a joke and 99% of their comments don't land.

So you're saying I don't know what an opinion is? I just heavily disagree with Dark's opinion but I do realize he has a right to it. That's fine if some of you find Scream to be one of the best horror films of all time and not just in the slasher genre, but I think people need to watch more horror films.

Not at all, don't take what I said the wrong way. I just meant that everyone has their own opinions but love or hate certain films you can't really argue that they are classics of the genre or game changers cause they are.

Whoever mentioned Going To Pieces, its a great doc.

As for top 3 horror mine are all in the slasher sub genre.

1) Halloween
2) A Nightmare on Elm Street
3) Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter

That's what I call the unofficial trilogy. If that were the actual trilogy of films and there were no more I think it'd be damn near perfect. But for what its worth I love Halloween 4 aswell and I just got the blu ray so will be watching that on October 31st seen as though I've watched 1, 2 and H20 (twice) over the past 3 or 4 weeks.

Same here. I will admit Halloween 4 made a good attempt at being scary. In my opinion they failed, but I think I might be a little harsh because I don't scare very easy. But they do get points for effort.

As for watching the "unofficial trilogy", I'm saving that for Halloween Night. I'm planning on dressing up to hand candy out to the trick-or-treaters and watching the Halloween Trilogy. Then I might watch some other horror films later that night.

My house is pretty popular for trick or treaters because I USUALLY deck the yard up something crazy (I have life-size moving Pinhead, Jason, Michael Myers and a bunch of other animatronic stuff like witches and random zombies etc) AND I give away the good candy (Snickers, Reeses Cups etc).

However, this year I'm just plain not in the mood...so I'll turn the lights off and watch a Horror movie. Or worse, since it's a Thursday...TNA Impact...wrestling so poorly written, it's scary!
