The Horror Thread - Part 6

Michael Myers was always better than Jason imo. Jason was never just a normal man Michael was and that to me is what makes Michael Myers head and shoulders above any other horror icons

I will have to respectfully disagree with you there, Jason was a "normal man" up until Part 4 when he finally died. He didn't become a supernatural entity until Part 6.

Given the insane damage Jason sustained even leading up to part 4, and the fact that he, well, drowned as a kid, I'm gonna have to say there was definitely something supernatural about him even before he became more of a literal zombie.

I think that's what makes Halloween & Friday the 13th fun genres.
Like our beloved superhero movies, you walk into it accepting that its a fantasy setting.
We all know no one has super powers and can fly, have super strength , be the best fighter in the world, etc.
And Halloween & Friday the 13th are the same. Jason & Michael are the superheroes in that genre.
I think once you ground it in reality, for either, it takes something away.
For me, thats what makes it entertaining. Why base it in reality at all?
I want to see an unstoppable monster who is a killing machine.
Making Jason & Michael 'normalized' makes no sense.
You might as well film a movie about a killer being hunted by the police.
Thats all it becomes if Jason & Michael are grounded in reality.

Those reasons are exactly why I love the original series for both. Even as out there as it is, even with the bad ones, it was just nice to see an indestructible force at work. I don't think the antagonists of either need to be toned down, per se, but it does become problematic when those characters get introduced to other characters that have telepathy, telekinesis, etc. or are cyborgs.

Just maintain the simple charm of the earlier installments and it's all good.

I hear what youre saying & I agree with what you said [Michael was perfect from the start; perfect mask, perfect movements, perfect killing implement.]
But 1 thing about Michael that always puzzled me, as far as the original film, they never explain how he has some 'supernatural' qualities. HIs ability to survive the high fall & gunshots From Loomis.

he went limp and had some kind of protective covering over his chest. or maybe Loomis is a bad shot. we know that Myers is freakisly strong because of how he pinned that teenager to the wall. that could account for him getting back up (or rolling out of sight).

Maybe the mystery of it all works best.
Michael is just some crazy motherf***er who simply cant be kept down.

Mystery does work best. Not knowing why the Shape could take that damage was the best thing. Introducing the family angle, Thorn, etc. diluted the character drastically.

I agree 100%. As that was introduced, I kind of lost interest in the franchise.
Same as in Friday the 13th, when they introduced the demon slug.

If its an A24 produced film, I will almost always give it a shot.

I like to just look at the original as being in its own separate universe compared to the sequels that came after. The two main characters aren't related in any way (as was the initial set-up) and it's just this supernatural force of a man going after a regular babysitter.

I'll probably check out It Comes At Night at some point, but I'm a little fatigued when it comes to all of the supernatural/paranormal/ghost based films. Must be how fans of that genre felt for the two decades where slasher films ruled the market. :oldrazz:

Has anyone seen The Love Witch? I hear it's a throwback to the Giallo movies of the 60s and 70s.

Fiona Dourif definitely has her father's eyes. Wow.

I'm hearing around the block that there may be some news hitting today on Blumhouse's Halloween reboot. Fingers are crossed.

So is this like confirmation they've started working on the next chapter? Please say yes! :hmr:

Btw, really starting to think Jennifer Tilly is a vampire. Her 58 might as well be 30. :ilv:

The 'Paranormal Activity' series and 'Blair Witch' series kind of turned me off to current horror.
I grew up watching the slasher horror films of the 80's & 90's , yes I am probably older then most here at SHH, and may be biased thinking the 80's & 90's slasher horror are better quality than whats out now.

They should have just continued with the rebooted "Michael Bay produced" Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street movies... Jackie Earle Hayley was an awesome, dark Freddy. It's a pity we won't see more of that version.

I was never really clear why they didnt continue on from the 2009 F13.
It did make a profit according to numerous sites.

Total Lifetime Gross
Domestic: $65,002,019
+ Foreign: $26,377,032
= Worldwide: $91,379,051

Well Danny McBride is in Alien: Covenant to, so perhaps he's on a bit of a horror kick these days. Also if he can get Walton Goggins to be in this to, that'd be fantastic.

As for the release date, 2018 makes so much more sense. Not only is there more time to get it right, but they can release it just in time for the 40th Anniversary of the original.

Thank goodness that alledged shaky cam version of the movie has been ditched

Ok Danny McBride? Isn't he more suited for comedy? Should we be worried?

As long as he sticks with the horror side of Myers, then I'm fine with it. If he starts sticking comedy in this movie much like Resurrection did, then count me out.
