The Horror Thread - Part 7

I found the one with the radiostation. It's called Dark Signal. A bit lower on the review side but some memorable visuals and I'd give it a thumbs up.:yay:

As for the one you mentioned I haven't seen it but will keep my eyes open if the one poster mentioned above isn't it.

Now, if I could only find that movie with the killer who raises people from the dead that has a fixation for his neighbors store bought cookies...

I found the movie I couldn't find before. It is called "Come Back to Me" (2014). The movie is creepy in a cold fishy finding something on the doorstep kind of way ...

So Kevin Smith's Tusk is basically the best Tales from the Crypt movie ever made except it's not officially a Tales from the Crypt movie. Kicks Demon Knight's arse in terms ot being a traditional Tales from the Crypt story. Though Demon Knight is a fun movie as well, just not classic Tales.

I love Tusk so much and how bizarre it is, but I personally won’t say it kicks Demon Knights “arse”. Cause I love Demon Knight, which I think is the better Tales movie over Bordello of Blood.

I like psychological horror movies or one's that have some sort of exploratory element utilizing sets and so forth to create atmosphere...

That being said, there's another odd movie I can't find that saw streaming years ago:
Edit:
Nevermind. I just found it just popped up after looking for a while it's called "Simon Killer" (2012).
It's in French and English throughout and it involves a young man going away from home visiting Paris where he meets one of the showgirls at a local club.

He befriends her and they're room mates and she sort of sympathizes and cares for him; it turns out he feeds off of this and becomes a major issue to deal with (the movie "is a character study on Simon's sociopathic tendencies and effects on people who come into his life" per wikipedia: Simon Killer - Wikipedia ) .

I edited this post so as not to spoil the ending as I'm not looking for it anymore.

A very irritating and annoying young man always feeding on sympathy to encourage negative patterns of behavior; a cowardly creature of habit that likes to listen to an annoying song over and over. The movie I'd put more in a psychological thriller category than horror overall though.

There's another movie I'm trying to find too it's about a some friends (or some couples) whose car breaks down and they get towed back to this place (think there's a bowling alley). As the movie progresses it becomes apparent they can't leave and everytime they leave they seem to circle back to this same small town.

The twist at the end is it's some kind of purgatory or something that they're stuck in. I was thinking Vacancy (2007) could be it but I'll have to watch it and don't think there's a purgatory like twist in that one so not sure that's it. Anyway, there's always some movie I can't find if not one then it's another...

Just saw The Lodge (2020) tonight. 7/10 for me—not terrible, but not quite what I was expecting/hoping for, based on the trailer.

Overall a fairly slow-paced film, even by general horror standards, and a bit long as well. More of a psychological horror film than anything else—the trailer seemed to imply somewhat of a supernatural theme, which it sort of touched on, but was barely present. And it was very well-made, but just not executed very well unfortunately.

There was an in-movie reference to John Carpenter's The Thing movie from 1982, which sort of made sense since both are horror movies set in snowy conditions, but didn't really add anything.

Also find it oddly coincidental that the actors playing the lead kid characters from the IT movies (Bill, Beverly, and Richie) all starred in horror movies this year already (The Lodge, Gretel & Hansel, and The Turning respectively). Hope they don't get typecast in the horror genre. :p

Just watched Swallow.
It's about a married woman who just found out that she's pregnant. Her husband is rich and successful. But she's really not IN CONTROL of her life. She has everything...but no one seems to care what she has to say or trusts her opinion on anything etc. She develops a (real world) issue called Pika...which is the urge to eat things that aren't food...dirt, a marble etc.

I really like this. It's not a Hollywood style Horror film. It's not really Horror at all...but I have been hearing about the film on Horror sites for a while, so I figured it could be discussed here. The year is early, so it doesn't mean much to say that this is my favorite genre movie so far of the year...but...yeah.

Watched The Color out of Space, starring Nic Cage...and this weird movie lets him go full Nic Cage. If you're into weird Horror movies, this is for you. If not...avoid at all costs.

This isn't a complaint...but the low budget was obvious a few times when they held back on FULLY showing some of the grossness. It's still gross...I just felt that a few scenes didn't go as far as they wanted. It's all good...I'm not going to hold budget against them too much.

I'm gonna try and catch this on Monday before it leaves the Cinema Village.

Couldn't find a specific thread but apparently James Wan's new horror Malignant had a test screening yesterday. ViewerAnon posted about it on Twitter. It did not go well. Laughed off the screen by all accounts.

SHAMELESS PLUG:
It took me awhile, and I'm pretty ROUGH at this since its my first time hosting anything...but my podcast is online! It's called This Podcast Will Save The World, and the first episode features interviews with Starfish writer/director A.T. White (which is awesome for me...my avatar is from Starfish) and psychologist and author of "Superhero Therapy" Dr Janina Scarlet. Link is in my signature...and I assure you...I'll get better at this.

Glenn Danzig's Verotika is bad, and not in a "so bad it's good" way. It's incompetent and boring.

Just want to give a shout out to a new movie called M.O.M. Mothers of Monsters. It's about a mother who believes that her son is planning a school shooting. It's more of a thriller with Horror elements...but should still be of interest to Horror fans. I just interviewed the writer/director for my podcast, and she had a lot of interesting background on the film.

Sleepaway Camp is a total bore fest outside of that amazing ending and final shot. I would totally watch it again with someone who doesn't know the ending though. I want to see someone's reaction.

The Lodge was the last movie I saw in theaters before Covid hit the U.S.
I agree it was strongly influenced by Ari Aster. The film was okay. The lead up to what exactly is occurring felt very blah to me.

Watched VFW... so good, yet not traditional horror. Pretty much a zany acid gore fest, that’s so worth the hour and a half.

The "twist" in this flick was painfully stupid.

I like the film, but I prefer the 2 sequels. Just find them a lot of fun, and used to watch them a lot on HBO back in the late 90s.

I sometimes miss latenight cable.

Well it could have been great, dealing with the repercussions of such a tragic joke.

The problem is logistics and suspension of disbelief. I don't buy that those kids have the intellectual forethought to be able to put something like that together. I was laughing my ass off in full "you gotta be ****ing kidding me" mode.

Yeah the first Sleepaway is ok at best with the amazing twist ending. Sleepaway Camp 2 is probably my favorite of those films.

They planned it out and it didn't take much "muscle" other than a certain scene in the attic.

It was mostly just,

...audio files
(we saw them studying her past)

...printing
(you can hear them printing stuff at one point, before they leave)

...and, determination
(hiding stuff and such, which seemed easy since they stole her drugs and her sleeping was utterly messed up/having walking nightmares)

All the while, that's the whole point of the daughter's dollhouse and the creepy scenarios displayed within it.
(they even show the dad looking at it, figuring it all out with said dollhouse)

They're kids in ~2018 or so. If I could teach myself Photoshop in the early 2000's in high school, I think kids growing up with iPhones/iPads can do this. As I said, its no less than a theatrical school project, hell I've seen people work harder on less for school.
