The Horror Thread - Part 7

Mathilda May... good LORD.

Mathilda May? Pfft! Patrick Stewart!

Ah the film that spawned several crappy sequels and remakes.
I actually liked TCM2 more than the first. I remembering liking the first remake but I haven't seen it in 15 years.

Alamo DraftHouse's Fantastic Fest is virtual this year and most of the movie screenings are FREE to stream: Fantastic Fest
That's good. I'm already ticked off that theaters most likely won't be open here in NYC when Halloween is on a Saturday on a full moon, perfect for a midnight movie marathon like I did a few years ago.
Anyone seen Lifeforce? What a ****ing awesome movie.
That's on the top of my pile for either the end of this month or kicking off next month's marathon.

TCM 2 and Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3 are some of the most underrated films in the franchise along with TCM: The Beginning. The 2003 remake is still one of my favorite horror remakes ever too and I'd take any of them over the more recent stuff anytime.

The TCM remake was great, sadly Platinum Dunes couldn't hold back the 2000's-ness of the writing with F13 or NOES.

Probably helped that it was period... didn’t help making the latter two contemporary.

I also enjoyed the F13th reboot a great deal. It's not like it was reaching a high bar in the first place.

I was initially really disdainful of the Rob Zombie Halloween reimagining when it first came out. But over the years, that disdain has slowly morphed into a tepid sort of fondness. The less said about the ANOES reboot, the better.

I like the F13 remake well enough, and I liked the NOES remake back in the day. However, I rewatched the NOES earlier this year for the first time in awhile and I found it to be a lot worse than I remembered.

So I'm working on my Horror marathon next month, but I need a couple new movies from 2020, anyone got recs?

Here's what I got so far:

Host
Amulet
Sputnik
The Other Lamb
1BR

I've already seen:

Invisible Man
We Summon The Darkness
Gretel & Hansel
The Lodge
The Rental
The Platform
VFW
Color Out of Space
Swallow
Blood Quantum
Relic

Have had some time this weekend to watch some films. These pics I took are straight off my tv as well.

The Others (2001)

Always one I come back to again and again, and great to transition into the month because of just how perfectly atmospheric it is. One of my favorite films to watch with people who haven't seen it and catch their reactions to one of my all-time favorite endings. Obviously anchored by a brilliant performance by Nicole Kidman, the rest of the cast nails their supporting roles and the production design is absolutely perfect for this era of ghost story. 5/5

That's lovely, but I need to stop double, triple and quadruple dipping on movies. I'm also still waiting on my pre-orders for the Arrow Dawn of the Dead and Scream Factory Friday the 13th box sets.

Nah not me if it’s something I love I’ll dip as many times as I can. With Halloween being my all time favorite horror film. I’ve dipped on this so many times for VHS, dvd and blu ray releases all of which I’ve posted before in the Halloween thread. Can never get enough personally.

I'm still on the fence about Dawn of the Dead. As much as I love it, I just can't pull the trigger at that price.

I don't mind double dipping if there's something new included like documentaries and making of etc. but not for new packaging/new artwork.

It depends on the movie for me. I love the Dead quadrilogy. I still need to upgrade Day and Land next. So many Days to choose from...

Like with Upgrade. I had to get that Second Sight release. And the Arrow Roboop release. That was my 4th copy of that flick.

In the end, it all depends on the flick and if money is available.

Yeah man of course not knocking you at all or anything. We all do our own thing for sure.

Did anyone watch the ''In Search of Darkness'' documentary? I thought it was rather disappointing. If you're an 80s horror buff then most of it is old hat.

That guy from the Dead Meat YouTube channel sounded like he was reading cue cards and it just came across as odd.

Yeah and I agree, I think it’s fine for one to have on in the background but they had so much to get through that they don’t spend enough time on each film.

Has anyone seen the movie Host? Heard good things. I might get a free trial of Shudder just to see that movie.

I actually really liked the first Unfriended. I thought it was a stroke of genius to purposefully depict the main characters as being fundamentally awful people, with the final girl even being the worst and most sociopathic. A lot of people held that against the film, but I found it to be very interesting and creatively done. I read one reviewer even disparagingly said that the real horror of this film was the narcissism and apathy of the millennial characters. I was like, but that's the whole genius of it! I think it's very underrated tbh. I didn't like Dark Web as much.
