I've wanted him for Peeta for awhile, glad he is interested. I hope either him or Hunter Parrish gets the role.

I actually really enjoy the idea of Liam Hemsworth. The guy is big enough in my mind.

EXCLUSIVE: Casting for the male leads on The Hunger Games isn't complete. I'm hearing that at the moment, Liam Hemsworth is frontrunner for the role of Gale Hawthorne, and that Josh Hutcherson is in the same position for the role of Peeta Mellark. In the Gary Ross-directed adaptation of the Suzanne Collins novel trilogy, Gale is the hunting partner of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), and Peeta is the baker's son chosen to accompany her as the district's entry into the deadly Hunger Games reality show competition. Both have been hotly contested roles among young actors, as was Katniss before Lawrence got the job. Both of these guys look right for the respective parts. Per Lionsgate, no offers have yet been made, and nothing is definitive.

i could accept liam as gale more than the other guy as peeta. i dont think of peeta when i see him at all

I like Hemsworth but I'm not to fond of Hutcherson. I'm sure he'll do fine though.

Its good that Hutcherson has gotten a lead in a big franchise role, because its no doubt that after the films of HP and Twilight are finished, The Hunger Games would be next big thing for the Tween/Teen market.

Very happy about Hemsworth getting the part of Gale, but I'm not completely sold on Hutcherson as Peeta yet. Still, this movie is shaping up well, and I think everyone sees it as the next big thing in Hollywood, hence the reason why those roles are so heavily coveted.

It's funny they seem to be casting a very female driven fanbase film more towards the male demographic. I mean, it's probably just me but they just a heroine who, let's face it, is drop dead gorgeous and chose two male love interests (who I assumed were meant to be impossibly good looking) who wouldn't exactly make a guy question his looks.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of film they're aiming for. I guess it'll be more Harry Potter than Twilight which is fine by me.

When Lawrence got the role as Katniss and she doesn't look like the part I don't mind since I think she got the acting skill to pull it off, but I'm not too fond of Hutcherson, he's a ok actor but it will take time to get used to him as Peeta and I don't about Hemsworth since I haven't seen any movies with him so I'll just wait to judge.

I wonder how they could f up the bread scene, and Gale has a more expanded role in the movie? Overall though it's sounds like it's pretty close to the book but we'll see how much will end up in the actual movie.

Oh, and here's an article in which the filmmakers talks about the casting decision of Hutcherson and Hemsworth.
http://www.examiner.com/the-hunger-games-in-national/the-hunger-games-filmmakers-respond-to-casting-of-peeta-gale

Fans may not be sold yet on the casting of Josh Hutcherson as Peeta and Liam Hemsworth as Gale in The Hunger Games movie, but filmmakers are positive they've made the right choice -- and they're speaking up today to prove it. The Hunger Games Examiner reached out to Lionsgate to hear what filmmakers had to say about the casting decision, and they were quick to respond.

“When I read the book, I thought Peeta would be the hardest role to cast," Hunger Games director Gary Ross said in a statement to the Hunger Games Examiner. "And I feel so lucky that we found someone who embodies every aspect of such a complex character. I can’t wait to work with Josh.”

Hunger Games author Suzanne Collins is also thrilled with Hutcherson's portrayal of Peeta. When asked to respond to the casting news, she had nothing but praise. "I was fortunate enough to be in the room with Gary Ross when Josh came in to audition," Collins said. "Three lines into the read I knew he'd be fantastic. Josh totally captured Peeta's temperament, his sense of humor and his facility for language. I'm thrilled to have him aboard."

Filmmakers are also defending their choice of Hemsworth as Gale. Most U.S. fans only know him from his performance in 2009's The Last Song, but filmmakers say Hemsworth showed them he has the skills to capture the essence of Gale.

“Gale is a young man who uses words very sparingly, so the onus was on the actor we cast to capture him by showing, not telling. This was accomplished so beautifully in Suzanne’s writing, and Liam was able to translate it so naturally to the screen," Hunger Games producer Nina Jacobson said. "At the same time, Gale’s journey across the three books transforms him, and Liam’s performance left no doubt that he would take us there. ”

Hopefully the words of Ross, Collins and Jacobson can help put any lingering doubts at ease for fans -- at least to give filmmakers enough time to start work on The Hunger Games movie.

Im sure Hutcherson will do fine. Ive never seen Hemsworth act.
Lawrence is a good actress, but I still cant picture her as Katniss. Even with looking at manips and rereading parts of the book.

They do have some good talent behind this though

The script review that green posted earlier for those who mightve missed it like I did

What up, tributes! As we mentioned last week on Twitter, we were lucky enough to get our hands on the Hunger Games film script thanks to an anonymous benefactress. (P.S. We’ve always wanted an anonymous benefactress! YAY!) The reaction to this news was mixed, with some of y’all being all, “OMG TELL ME TELL ME TELL ME” and a few of you being like, “Don’t spoil it for us!” And then there were the threats, which totally worked (assuming their intended effect was to make us feel deliciously scandalous while sipping our martinis).

So, we decided to ignore our mother’s advice and try to make everyone happy. If you don’t want to ready any spoilers on the script, STOP READING YO. If you want to get a general sense of the script but still keep a few surprises for opening night, continue on! And if you think that us talking about the script is going to ruin the movie, now might be a good time to remember that IT’S BASED ON A BOOK. OH YEAH AND RUE DIES. SURPRISE!

Per usual, we’ve divided our highly scientific analysis into several categories.

ACCURACY

Since gloves make my hands sweaty, let’s just take ‘em off right now and start with the category most important to HG swimfans. Because even though we recognize that the nature of film adaptation always requires change, that doesn’t mean people like us won’t LOSE OUR SHIZZ when our favorite moments in the book are altered/stolen from us and sold into sex slavery.

Overall, the script stays relatively true to the storyline, so you can breath a sigh of relief. We get to see the rooftop scene, the cave scene, and Rue’s death is pretty much straight out of the pages of the novel. Oh yeah and HAI BUTTERCUP! The Flickerman interviews in particular will definitely shine on screen, and the events in the arena are jam-packed with tension (more on that in the Badassery section).

HOWEVER, there are some alterations and, ahem, additions.

CHANGES THAT MIGHT BE GOOD

* There’s lots more Haymitch to love!
* During the games, the script nicely cuts back to audiences watching, which I think will add another deliciously painful layer of drama to the film.
* We get to see more behind the scenes of the games, including the super evil Seneca Crane.

CHANGES THAT MIGHT SUCK REALLY HARD

* The bread scene? Yeah, they effed with it.
* The Mockinjay pin comes from… someone different.
* Gale’s role is waaaaay expanded in this movie.

I’ll let the other FYA ladies weigh in:

Meghan: If you’re gonna add something to the story, don’t make it lame.

Megan: Maybe Suzanne Collins will go all Tolkien on us and we’ll get appendices in her next edition (including Gale: The Lost Days or Gale’s Secret Journey).

Erin: WHERE IS MADGE?

Jenny: I can’t believe they messed with the bread scene. That’s some serious blasphemy.

QUALITY

Accuracy aside, the script seems to capture the right balance of exciting plot and character development. The dialogue seems close if not straight out of the book, so there’s no added hokeyness or bad jokes. I’m also relieved that the story hasn’t been Michael Bayifed, although…

Megan: Who wrote this script? I’m going to say it was a dude, because every so often we get a line like this: “They exit their chariots, disrobing like strippers backstage at a bad club.”

Megan: Yeah, and stuff like “calm as Tom Brady.” Who the hell is Tom Brady? I had to google him.

Fortunately, there won’t be a narrator reading those comments in the movie.

BADASSERY

All you bloodthirsty tributes will be happy to know that none of the violence or brutality in the book was edited out of the script. I can’t WAIT to see Katniss give Buffy a run for her money as Most Badass Fictional Heroine, cos girl is FIERCE. Also, the script is obviously trying to help the filmmakers get their money’s worth out of the CGI muttations, and the build-up on those beasts is gonna be intensity in ten cities.

Meghan: As long as the effects are good and don’t cause me to snort my Effie out of my nose, it’ll be very badass. And pus-filled.

WILL TEAM PEETA BE HAPPY?

A lot of this obvs depends on Josh Hutcherson, and since I’ve already made it clear how I feel about THAT casting decision, let’s move on to the way Peeta comes across in the script. Basically, he’s written exactly as he is in the book, and I’m trying to find consolation in that so I can STOP CRYING.

Megan: Script-wise, yes. Peeta is at his most Peeta-ish. However, I CANNOT GUARANTEE IT WILL BE PROPERLY EXECUTED acting-wise. Siiigh.

WILL TEAM GALE BE HAPPY?

This is a tough one. While I’m sure Gale fans will be excited to see more of him in the film*, I’m not sure they’ll be happy with the reason for his extended screen time.

*That is, if they happen to like this guy.

Ladies, what do you think?

Megan: Not sure. Gale hasn’t have a chance to bomb Prim yet. So maybe. Heh.

Jenny: Part of what I did like about Gale was that he not only took care of his own family the way Katniss did, but totally took care of hers while she was away. I won’t divulge any details, but let’s just say… I now have one less thing to like about Gale.

Thus ends our careful yet purposefully sorta vague analysis of the Hunger Games script. Let me conclude by saying that in spite of some disappointments, I still think we might enjoy this movie. Especially because, obvs, THERE WILL BE A DRINKING GAME.

I hear that Gale [BLACKOUT]leaves his family to visit Katniss in the Capitol

i really hope what you posted in a spoiler doesn't happen.

i like the look of Hemsworth as Gale with Lawrence cast as Katniss. There's a resemblance enough to pass as cousins if script adds that little part. I hope they darken his hair though.

As for Jen being Katniss, i'm pretty much ok with it now. I know she's doing her homework, and seeing a brief Capt America article the other day kinda made me think of something. It wouldn't take much work, cgi, special effects, makeup etc to make Katniss appear really skinny, slighty gaunt and malnourished in the beginning.

i'd forgotten about the "makeovers" they got when they got to the capital. all her scars, scrapes etc were removed to make all the contestants more appealing looking. so when she puts on that infamous dress by Cinna, she's gotta have the presence and look that can start a revolution. i think jen can do it.

i like how the cast is looking.

I never pictured Banks as Effie (everyone knows my heart was set on Chenoweith). but i'm sure she can pull it off. i could actually see her playing Momma Everdeen too

Yeah Chenoweith was my top choice too. But Banks is good

Im still hoping for James Gandolfini for Haymitch. But I doubt it.

Laurie was my top choice but that's not gonna happen.

someone mentioned Jeff Bridges once. i was surprised i didn't hate the idea.

I feel like the casting of Haymitch is a very important deal. He's gotta have the chemistry to be on level with all the key players and be hated and liked at the same time

Thats why I think Gandolfini is perfect. In the Sopranos he was an unlovable domestic violence committing, unfaithful d**k, but then he was a likeable guy the next

Laurie is cool, but yeah I doubt he'll be cast. Same with RDJ. I cant believe people think he would do this

Jeff Bridges would be good.
