"The Joker" in development with Todd Phillips and Martin Scorsese attached?

Sounds terrible. Even for an elseworld story.

Brendan Schaub is a former MMA fighter who’s transitioned to Hollywood over the last few years. At one point on the podcast they were talking about Tim Burton, which lead to Batman, which lead to the new Joker movie. Schaub is friends Todd Feldman, who just so happens to be Todd Phillips’ agent, and revealed some new details about the movie.

“My boy Todd Feldman put this together with Todd Phillips,” Schaub said. “It’s dark. It’s like a dark Joker. As a kid, he had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.” Check out his comments in the video below around the 1:03:32 mark.

On the one hand, getting news like this from some random MMA fighter is suspect.

On the other hand, even Stevie Wonder could see that a dark take on Joker's origin isn't exactly surprising.

Anybody above the age of 15 that uses the phrase "my boy" in reference to another person needs to be slapped.

I was wrong, he might be telling the truth as he mentioned on a podcast last month that a Joker origin movie was in the works. Mentions stuff like beginning in Brooklyn in the 60's or 70's with his mom a prostitute and a father who abandoned them. Starts at 5:01.

Really not liking the sound of this! The only positive thing would be that it's kind of an Elseworld's tale.

Sounds Rorschach-y from Watchmen.

I had a feeling that he would be the beat-down young guy who would flip the switch.

Haha they talk like that on the podcast a lot.

I wonder if the Joker will get raped. You can't truly be dark without rape. Maybe in the same cell Batman later gets raped. SUPER DARK.

Bullied kid with a permanent smile sounds dumb. Was hoping for the Red Hood/TKJ origin

Sounds a lot like the Grinch.

Sounds like they figured out a way to make the worst comic book movie of all time. Well done.

Considering the idea for Green Lantern or Suicide Squad sounded fantastic and they turned out not so good, this will probably be the best comic book based movie ever. :o

The Joker could've been an online alt righter, but the chemical dip made him less of a monster.

So he was born with the smile? That's original... I guess.

It's been a few years since I've read it but wasn't his mom a prostitute in TKJ? This sounds fairly standard except for the perma smile.

The Joker (2019)
Directed by Todd Phillips
Produced by Martin Scorsese

The Wolf of Wall Street's Johnny Hill stars as The Joker, who as a kid, had a permanent smile and everyone made fun of him. It’s like on the streets of Brooklyn. It’s super dark and real.

IMO, this project needs to be merged with the Mad Love film.

Honestly, my enthusiasm for this would be through the roof if they'd throw a blank check at Scorsese to direct it.

Martin Scorsese's The Man Who Laughs. :hmr:

There's a precedent for most of this stuff somewhere in the mythos in various retellings of The Joker's (possible) origin. Absent father, etc.

Assuming, of course, that this rumor is true.

No. His mom is not even mentioned.

I see. So I wonder where this "Joker's mom was a prostitute" bit originated. I fee like I've read about it before. There was that line in TDK that seemed to imply that his mom was a prostitute but it got got modified in the final film. Maybe the filmmakers actually want to develop that idea.

It probably sounds familiar because it's literally the origin of Rorschach.

Jerome in Gotham ?

Completely demystifying your massively popular villain is always a good idea.

It worked well for Darth Vader, and the Alien, so -

...ahhh.

To be fair, the execution was not that good.

Now, one can be interested or not in such a concept, but there are always a way: "Leatherface" so far is well received and it is an attempt to explain the leatherface "mystery"

The Darth Vader thing definitely could have worked. It isn't the basic idea itself that failed, it was the way it was set up timeline wise and some very bad auxiliary decisions.
