Shane Black is in contention to write and direct Iron Man 3 for Marvel Studios.
The writer/director has powwowed with Marvel execs about his take on the third installment in the blockbuster franchise.
Insiders said that Black's involvement is far from a sure thing, and that other writers and directors were being looked at.
Marvel is keeping the story direction of Iron Man 3 -- which returns Robert Downey Jr. in the title role -- secret.
Disney, which owns Marvel, is scheduled to release the threequel on May 3, 2013.
The directing spot recently opened up when Jon Favreau, who directed the first two movies, announced he was departing the franchise.
Iron Man 3 would reteam Black and Downey, who worked together on the well-regarded Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, which Black directed and co-wrote.
Black made his name writing high-profile specs in the 1980s and 1990s and, with movies such as Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, was one of the top writers in the action genre.
Boarding Iron Man would prove that the vet scribe isn't too old for this s***, to borrow a line from one of his movies. Several weeks ago, Black was tapped to write Death Note, Warner Bros.'s adaptation of a manga, and is working on Doc Savage, Sony's action project based on the classic pulp hero.
Black is repped by WME.

Holy ****, I just read this and it sounds awesome. Lethal Weapon 1&2 are among my tip-top action movies and though I haven't seen Kiss Kiss Bang Bang I hear good things. Fans are always suggesting this guy and he seems like a great choice (I'll admit that's not very typical with fanchoices for me). Obviously fantastic with writing unstable characters and I'd be excited if he signed on.

ok, ok! I'll get on it later, I'm sick anyway. Because Chewy says so, and what Chewy says, goes.

Hopefully it's true, that means we'll get sharp witty dialogue without RDJ's improvising.

Lethal Weapon writer working on iron man 3?!

...awesome.

Yeah, Downey Jr and Hugh Jackman have similar contracts. :D

This is fantastic news. Hope it happens.

Awesome news! Shane Black would be great for this.

After Favreau's departure, I thought it would take a pretty remarkable director to give me hope that the third film wouldn't be a disaster. Shane Black is that director. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang was FANTASTIC.

I'll be even more impressed with Marvel Studios than I already have been if Shane Black gets the writer/director job on IRON MAN 3. Black can write the **** out of an an action movie, has a flair for quirky dialogue, his directorial debut KISS KISS BANG BANG was superb and helped revive Robert Downey Jr.'s career. He's just about as perfect a choice as there could be.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my absolute favorite movies of all time. Ideally, I'd like Favreau to finish out the trilogy, but since that isn't happening, I stand firmly behind this decision, if it pans out.

Let this be true. I love Kiss Kiss Bang Bang so it will be awesome to see Shane Black tackle Iron Man III.

Shane Black is awesome. I would rejoice.

Mmm... I don't know. Not a big fan of his movies. Yes, KKBB was good, but not something extraordinary or awesome. Still, a good choice nonetheless, but I don't think that he'll end up directing IM3, 'cause he's got some other big project (I don't remember the name of it) to work on.

He's doing a american adaptation of the japanese manga series Death Note next although Black himself said that he isn't sure which project he'll next direct.

I hope he decides to do it. He's got plenty of time to finish his other projects, I'm sure Iron Man 3 won't start pre production for another two years or so until The Avengers is well and truly done with.

Getting a director of Black's caliber would certainly make me feel better about Disney producing this film too. It would be great to get a really stellar director instead of a guy who has proven success with family friendly films.

I'm all for Shane Black directing Iron Man 3. Perhaps he could get Val Kilmer as Happy Hogan too seeing as Kilmer needs some cash.
