I keep reading the news about cable networks trying things to keep their subscribers. Like with HBO doing HBO Go. Which I doubt will succeed. I think Cable networks have missed the point entirely and it’s why they seem to be fading out like dinosaurs. They don’t understand that the viewing habits of our society have changed so drastically and it will not return to the ways of old. Most people I’ve talked with will either watch shows on Netflix or wait until the DVD’s are released for their favorite shows. I seem to run into less and less people who watch the shows live or even on cable at all. And that dramatic change is growing all the time.

Sure, other companies come along touting themselves as the “Netflix” killers (or rather news articles call them that) Amazon TV/movies, Itunes, Hulu and a few others. But let’s be honest…generally speaking the regular joe has no real interest in watching tv on his computer. He or she wants to fall on the couch, cuddled up with someone of interest and watch a show or movie together on a big screen without having to try and figure out how to get their PC hooked up to their big screen tv in the living room. So, things like Amazon and Hulu will do alight, but they will never achieve the success of Netflix.

But let’s not turn this into a Netflix post…because it’s not. Netflix is just a small part of the growing change in our societies entertainment habits. We live in a society that is much busier than it used to be, we are more preoccupied. We want to watch things when we want to watch them, but not pay huge monthly fees for a handful of shows. Society has changed. And those that don’t change along with it will fade into the background.
