The Last Of Us might be getting made into a movie, Sony Pictures registers domain

Well it looks as though The Last Of Us is getting made into a feature film sometime in the future. As Sony Pictures has registered the domain for “thelastofus-movie.com” recently.
Well that was kind of out of no where, and not something I personally expected to happen. The Last Of Us draws heavily from the 2009 film The Road, and comparisons are likely to be made by those not familiar with the game. Who knows if this’ll actually end up ever coming into fruition, all the same though Sony is obviously interested in doing it.

Sony Pictures is so lost with their video game franchises, it's a shame that they don't realize what a goldmine they're sitting on.

please no. this game does not need to become a movie. it's perfect as it is.

how did that Uncharted movie work out for them?

oh wait...

What in gods name could a movie bring? The game is not only one the best games in history, it's also one of the best stories in any medium of the past 10 years. There is no way in hell a film does the story justice.

The game already is an interactive movie. No need for this

Screen Gems to Distribute Feature Version of PS3 Game ‘Last of Us’

Screen Gems will distribute the live action film “The Last of Us,” which is based on Naughty Dog’s popular PlayStation 3 game.

Neil Druckmann, the creative director for the game, will also write the script.

Naughty Dog co-presidents Evan Wells and Christophe Balestra will produce, as well as Druckmann and game director Bruce Straley, along with Sam Raimi via his Ghost House Pictures banner.

The game is set 20 years after the cordyceps virus ravaged the course of humanity and follows a hardened survivor and a young and capable girl who journey together through a radically transformed world.

“Our partnership with Sam Raimi, Ghost House Pictures, and Screen Gems to develop a film based on ‘The Last of Us’ universe is a perfect fit,” said Evan Wells, Naughty Dog’s co-president. “Since our game released last June, we’ve talked with many companies about making a film, but we couldn’t have found better partners who share our creative vision and high standards. We look forward to collaborating with Sam, his team, and Screen Gems, to make a movie that will thrill fans of The Last of Us and general audiences worldwide.”

Oh.

*cough*

MAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!

Can't wait to see this... and Assassin's Creed, Uncharted, Bioshock, Halo and all the other video games they've promised movies for and haven't delivered in the past 10 years.

Except need for speed. Because THERES a video game that was in desperate need of the Hollywood treatment :o

Love the game. Probably won't bother with the Movie. Just seems pointless to me, since the Movie probably won't live up to the game. Great for everyone else who hasn't played the game though.

Dylan McDermott for Joel. Looks and sounds just like him:

I'm still going with Hugh Jackman for Joel. Anyone who has seen Prisoners would agree with me.

I still feel this is one of the most unnecessary games for film adaption as the game itself is a prime example of story telling in the video game genre, and some would consider it a disservice to the genre. The game itself feels almost like an incredibly interactive cinema experience in some ways.

A reddit user really summed up one of the big problems that would come with it. Putting it in spoilers because there are some game spoilers for though who haven't played or finished it.

You're absolutely right. The Last of Us was kind of revolutionary in that (in my opinion) it's the first time that a game really transcended the medium and really showed the world how you can tell a poignant, subtle, devastating-yet-heartwarming story that could not be delivered through any other medium.
In spite of the chance of hype-backlash, I really do think it's the first true storytelling masterpiece of video gaming. Everything about it from the acting, the gameplay, the construction of the world, the characters, the little bits of lore and details that are scattered throughout, the minor interactions you have as you just travel through the land -- it's all very good, but it's also all combines to give you an experience that you simply couldn't get anywhere else.
In a 2 hour movie, the scene where you find the giraffes and have a quiet moment of beauty, innocence, and peace with Ellie ever be as poignant as it was in the game, which only works because it comes after so many hours of living through trauma, depression, despair, tension, stress, and everything else that the characters went through? These are things we lived through with them. We didn't read about them or watch them on a screen, we actually in some sense were those characters as they experienced all those things, and so that scene becomes all the more powerful as a result.
Hell, the simple aspect of being able to choose when you let that moment end is part of the greatness of it. There's no director that forces that moment to end. You experience it for as long as it means something to you.
A movie version of that could just not live up to that moment, or so many of the other beautiful moments that occur in that game. A movie simply doesn't give you the opportunity to live-the-character the way that a game like the Last of Us does, and without that experience all the beautiful moments that were so powerful in that game would seem empty and kind of pointless.
Sure, you could film a basic outline of the game's plot in two hours, but it couldn't ever build up that kind of connection with the characters with a passive viewing of them with a runtime somewhere under three hours.
I would really rather they didn't even try. The Last of Us is a legitimately revolutionary step forward in video games as art, and making a ****** movie out of it just seems almost...unfair.

This seems really redundant. The Last of Us was already a very cinematic game and I can't imagine a actual movie adaptation doing better than it. It benefited greatly from the format of a video game that's 15 to 20 hours long and allows for such in depth character growth and exploration. The fact that Neil Druckman is writing the script is the only thing that interests me with it. I hope what they come up with is a different story that takes place within the same universe rather than trying to do Joel and Ellie's story again.

I just hope that they don't use their own effects company, Sony ImageWorks. Basically they decided that technology peaked in 2004 and they haven't really improved since then. I really hate most of their work post-Spider-man2

Look, I love the game, one of the best I've played for sure. Will a movie be able to bring the same kind of immense experience? No, but it can still do other things that a game can't and bring It's own experience -- it all depends on the approach and how well It's executed. For us lovers of the game it can be a complement more than a replacement.

Personally I'm quite excited at the prospect for this world, it's story and characters to be well realized in a live-action context and brought to a wider audience.

In fact, I'd say that this game being so cinematic is actually a reason why It's ripe for an adaptation.

Love the game. Probably won't bother with the Movie. Just seems pointless to me, since the Movie probably won't live up to the game. Great for everyone else who hasn't played the game though.

Had they actually based it on of the games (Like Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and/or it's sequel NFS: Carbon), it would've been.

BUT, they created an original story and slapped the NFS name on it.

My favorite game of last gen, not sure I want a movie, but I will support it with Druckman writing I will hope for the best.

I'd actually prefer if the film was a different story with different setting and characters in the same universe instead of a straight adaptation of what we already saw.

I would like the Movie to focus on the time Joel had to survive during the outbreak.

Screen Gems did the Resident Evil movies. I want an Alice cameo.
