SEGA and Nintendo's war in the 90's is being made into feature film

What about Nintendo becoming a software only company like Sega did?

I think they jumped the shark console-wise with the Wii U.

It'll be a matter of time. Or they get bought out by a giant entity like Disney.

How much would Nintendo cost?

Disney just spent a few billion on Marvel and Star Wars each.

If Nintendo keeps up their mismanagement, maybe for the same price range.

Which will soon give them back some more billions, though Nintendo is quite different, since they're a vídeo game company. And considering how much Disney has indeed spent latelly, buying another giant seems unlikelly at the moment, also, Nintendo must get a lot from Pokémon merchandising alone.

That is an idea that a lot of people seem to like but not one of them works at Nintendo who seems determined to maintain their exclusivity with a console instead of licensing out to Microsoft and Sony like Sega has done.

While i would love to play the entire Mario, Zelda and Metroid franchise on my playstation, the thing is that Nintendo hasn't f****d up their oun franchises the same way Sega did. This type of control allows every Mario, Pokémon or LoZ game to be of quality, unlike the state Sonic is right now, we can also look at Megaman as another icon that by not being a certain console's "pet" ends up being ignored.

Even if Nintendo were to license out Mario, Zelda, Samus, etc. to other consoles they can retain the control of the games themselves by making them. That would be the entire point of become a software-only company.

This project has quietly been going on for awhile. Rogen and Goldberg tweeted about it in late 2012. They also did the foreword for the book which is a good sign.

Here's a description of the book, even with Nintendo winning the war it looks like it will be from Sega's perspective.

Following the success of The Accidental Billionaires and Moneyball comes Console Wars—a mesmerizing, behind-the-scenes business thriller that chronicles how Sega, a small, scrappy gaming company led by an unlikely visionary and a team of rebels, took on the juggernaut Nintendo and revolutionized the video game industry.

In 1990, Nintendo had a virtual monopoly on the video game industry. Sega, on the other hand, was just a faltering arcade company with big aspirations and even bigger personalities. But that would all change with the arrival of Tom Kalinske, a man who knew nothing about videogames and everything about fighting uphill battles. His unconventional tactics, combined with the blood, sweat and bold ideas of his renegade employees, transformed Sega and eventually led to a ruthless David-and-Goliath showdown with rival Nintendo.

The battle was vicious, relentless, and highly profitable, eventually sparking a global corporate war that would be fought on several fronts: from living rooms and schoolyards to boardrooms and Congress. It was a once-in-a-lifetime, no-holds-barred conflict that pitted brother against brother, kid against adult, Sonic against Mario, and the US against Japan.

Based on over two hundred interviews with former Sega and Nintendo employees, Console Wars is the underdog tale of how Kalinske miraculously turned an industry punchline into a market leader. It’s the story of how a humble family man, with an extraordinary imagination and a gift for turning problems into competitive advantages, inspired a team of underdogs to slay a giant and, as a result, birth a $60 billion dollar industry.

This chart says the Genesis sold 29 million units versus 49 million for SNES.

The Sega Scream has to be in the film.

I've never been a Nintendo fan. It all started with SEGA Genesis for me in 1993, and then I went immediately to PS1, then PS2, then XBOX 360. To this day, the most fun I've EVER had from video games came from the Genesis and the PS2. I think PS2 in particular is the greatest system ever.
Ditto
Well, the PS2 slim is my favorite, if we want to make it specific to a console version, you can put the whole system plus accessories plus a couple of games in a laptop case, and if the power is cut off you can still get the disc out of the system

Only remembered now that there was a manga inspired by these console wars

Why would there be nudity?
Maybe if they point out some of the porn stuff made for emulators?

I had a Genesis throughout most of the 16-bit era. I got a SNES in 1995 and to be honest, I wasn't that impressed with it. I thought Mario 3 was superior to Mario World, and a lot of games on SNES I had already played on Genesis. Then the 3D era came and my SNES just collected dust. But the Donkey Kong Country games were incredible.

I've had a Genesis most of my life and I didn't own a SNES until a few years ago and I gotta say, as much as I loved the Genesis it quickly replaced it as my third favorite gaming console after the PS1 and Original Xbox(the Dreamcast successor as I saw it :cwink:). The SNES had the best Zelda, Super Mario, and Final Fantasy games. Super Metroid is arguably the best Metroid next to Prime. Then there is Super Castlevania IV, Mega Man X 1-3, Super Star Wars trilogy, and tons of more goodies the Genesis games couldn't come close to unfortunately. I still love the Genesis but the SNES had alot more exclusive games.

I liked the Genesis gamepad more, and the sleek look of the Genesis and dark gray color are more appealing to my eyes than the SNES
SNES is practically better as a device, more durable, and the gamepad is more solid

The SNES gamepad is probably my favorite controller alongside the Gamecube and PlayStation controllers.

Playstation meanwhile, oh man. Oddworld, Crash, Parappa, Metal Gear, Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, Fear Effect, Spyro, Tomba, Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy, Mega Man Legends, I could go on and on..

My childhood right there, well most of those games anyways. I still buy and play PS1 games today, great console. (The N64 was great too!)

64, Gamecube and the 360 are easily my top 3 in that order. Oh and Nintendo will never license out.their property. The Wii u is the very.definition of struggling but its something they'll be able to bounce back from especially with the ridiculous runaway success of the 3ds

Yeah all this doom and gloom talk about Nintendo is really depressing, I don't see it happening. Nintendo will bounce back. The Wii U is like the Gamecube in terms of success, Nintendo will be fine I think.

By the way, I got a 3DSXL this past week and it is fantastic. I'm enjoying it far more than my PS4 right now.

I'm a biased SEGA fanboy, but IMO, Nintendo is the big greedy corporation who dominates the industry. They wiped out their competitors like Atari.

SEGA, a struggling game manufacturer, is on the verge of going out of business, so in order to compete with Nintendo's Goliath, they bet all their chips on a new mascot, Sonic. And the war begins.

IMO, SEGA's the underdogs, going up against the big guy.

:o Karma is a *****, cause Playstation and Xbox are sending Nintendo to the grave.

:o of course the Wii and Wii-U are just horrible decisions. And I have a Wii, collecting DUST. :csad: can' sell it cause my little bro has most of the games in which he hardly plays, but they are decent zombie ones.

All I know is that I loved my Sega Genesis and my NES. And my N64 for that matter.

As someone who grew up during that period, it was a win all around for gamers who could play more than shooters in that decade.

Yeah, Nintendo DS is a major success to Nintento, as long as they don't end up failing at both the home console and the handheld console they won't have any problem.

But it's still depressing how much the Giants have fallen over time, Sony and Microsoft are also way too big to end up as Sega or Atari, so i see this rivalry lasting even longer, it's been going on for basically an entire decade.

If this movie focusses entirely on the 3rd and 4th generation of consoles, then Sega can end up looking like the victorious hero at the end (with the inevitable expository text at the end telling the audience what happened after that).

Kinda funny that it is Sony that will make a movie about the so called war between Nintendo and Sega

Was a Nintendo kid in the 90s (had NES, SNES and N64), but enjoyed playing SEGA at friends (especially Sonic and the sports games). This movie has potential to be interesting for sure.
