The Amazing Spider-Man The Lizard - How does he compare with Spidey's other onscreen adversaries?

which is a perfect reason for the villain to create them....they would be inexperienced too since they would have been lizard men for a minute

the SWAT were no match for Lizard as he took them out easily and then gassed them.
They seemed like the sort of thing a villain would create to keep the hero from coming right at him

That makes no sense. The second Dr. Connors was turned into a Lizard, he went right to the bridge to attack Dr. Ratha. There is more instinct than anything else.

If Captain Stacy helps with the lizard-men, then you ruin the moment when Captain Stacy comes to help with the Lizard. And then Captain Stacy doesn't die, and the ending of the film loses all its power.

Why would Captain Stacy not die? He would still get killed in the end. He would just help Spider-Man like he did in the movie, only with a bunch of Lizard men rather than just one.

A mini army of SWAT lizards was a potentially hokey concept...I'm kinda glad they decided not to take that risk. They touched on it nicely with a few quick transformations and kept it mostly off screen...I liked it.

If I had to weigh this on the merits of the villain alone and not the origin which I completely enjoyed, I would have to place the Lizard dead last. He really never had much development as a true villain and it was hard to tell how much of that was Connors versus an alter identity. And the small lizards just came out of nowhere and semi-existed like the penguins did in Batman Returns. The Lizard was the weakest and least enjoyable part of the movie for me. Thankfully he wasn't in it long.

Lizzy was a lot like Two Face in TDK. Most of the film is built as his normal human self and we get the evil side towards the latter half of the movie. But you've got to include his entire transformation from good to bad- so I think it was done really well. My only wish was for more scenes with the Lizard in the labcoat. He could have been in Lizard form in the sewer scenes performing experiments with the coat on.

The difference is as a Two-Face fan I was still satisfied with his role in TDK. As a Lizard fan, I want more.

Yeah, with the toy previews we got I was waiting for him to have to fight a small army of lizardmen.

Lizard, while not used to his FULL potential (no Spidey villain has been that yet, and no, definitely not Doc Ock either), is my favourite so far.

1) Lizard
.
.
.
2) Doc Ock
3) Green Goblin
4) New Goblin
5) Sandman
6) Venom

I had no problem with the lizard design, but I still think that he could've been done with prosthetics and makeup, with only a bit of CGI to amp it up. It really pains me to know that the lizard would've looked more realistic with those things and would've made the design even more menacing

The Lizard was maybe the weakest point of the film for me. His voice was wrong. I hoped it would have been more reptilian like. He was also too big and he should have weared the lab coat more. I wanted him to be like in this (where was this scene?)

Lizard was ok but it could have been much better

I will give you my opinion after tomorrow.
Good idea for a thread

After seeing it twice, I'm undecided.
Each villain offered something different.
Green Goblin was still a great villain, despite his costume lol.
Doc Ock's battles were eye-gasmic lol, his battle scenes had the longevity too.
The extended battle in 2.1 made it more brutal, so would probably rank Doc Ock first.

I would place Lizard second. He had the connection with Peter, after working on the decay rate algorithm and the Freddy simulation; even Spidey was saying during the school battle "this isn't you doc; don't make me hurt you" .
The high school fight was a joy to watch. Loved the way he just clawed at Spidey in the sewer battle.

What I liked more about Lizard compared to the other villains was that as soon as he deduced Spidey's identity, he went straight after him, not any of this "attack his heart" / people closest to him business, he went straight to the source!

I loved what we got, but I think slightly more character development/the deleted footage and lines would have probably put him 1st in my opinion.

Basic tactics. Attack where someone is weak. Do you attack the spider powered hero or his frail Aunt at home?

In a nutshell, here's my opinions on the movie Lizard...

What I liked:

-Lizard spoke and was intelligent as opposed to being a mindless beast.
-He wasn't a totally evil killer (despite knocking cars off the bridge) and he actually tried to convince Spidey that his master plan made sense and to stop fighting him.
-He briefly wore the lab coat.
-Connors felt remorse at the end and saved Spidey, while also willingly going to jail for killing George Stacy and all the other stuff he did as Lizzy.

What I didn't like:

-The transformation sequences, or lack thereof. I was never convinced by the "shedding" effects as the Lizard reverted back to Connors.
-No mention of Martha or Billy Connors. Curt was less sympathetic since he wasn't a family man.
-The general design of the Lizard. The eyes and tail looked good but overall this huge, naked, blunt-faced Lizard looked too much like the Abomination from the second Hulk movie. He wasn't sleek and lizardlike enough.
-The fight scenes between Spidey and Lizard were OK, but not the awesome show-stoppers they could have been. There was a brief scene in the high school where Spidey was trying to get away from the Lizard, and they both crawled across the ceiling super fast. There needed to be more sequences like this, showcasing that the Lizard is as fast Spidey and can climb walls just as well. Most of the other fight scenes were just the usual punching and throwing around that we always see in superhero movies. There were opportunities missed here.

Overall, I liked the movie, but I have to say it was because of the Peter/Gwen interaction more than the Lizard as the villain. Kind of bittersweet for me, since I've been waiting over 10 years to see my favorite comic character on screen.

He seemed like a very stock superhero movie villain to me with the split personality and the plot to spread gas over the city, both of which have been done to death in other movies including the Raimi villains. The characterization was pretty weak overall, with a rushed fall into madness and truncated action as the Lizard. I did like the more humanoid design, but it felt incongruous with the more grounded approach they were taking. Maybe if they used more in-camera effects like prosthetics and makeup it would looked more believable on screen.

Lizard totally sucked in the movie.
I think Sam Raimi would've made a lot better Lizard than Marc Webb.

Liked Connors a lot and his subtle reactions to Peter during their interaction. It's lovely watching good actors interact with other good actors.

I'm not big on superhero villains and they all seem to be mustache twirling dramatists of one kind or another anyway.
But what I did like about Connors/Lizard dichotomy was the whole Jekyll and Hyde dynamic. It started with Connors choosing the lesser of two evils-- injecting himself -- and then allowing himself to be gradually taken over by the alter ego.

Glad we didn't get the lab coat Lizard... Would have given me the giggles.

I agree with people saying Lizard was a bland, stock villain. The film takes much of the tragedy away from the character, and it made him way less interesting.

The thing is that he was a family man since he did have a wedding ring on his finger. They clearly show that in the movie, but his family was just thrown out of the window.

He may have had a ring, but the fact they never went into detail about it makes that point meaningless.

A really missed opportunity. Even the game bothers to mention his family.

Wow really? Now I appreciate the video game even more just for that. I have a feeling that in one of the deleted scenes on the DVD/Blu-Ray, we will either get a mention of his family or just a quick shot of them. Either way, they were made insignificant since the Lizard didn't care to go after them or even think of them.

I'm hoping for deleted scenes.. and a bunch of them. This film was cut and cut and cut it seems.. maybe there's an extended version floating out there somewhere?

But Marc Webb said we will be getting only about 4 deleted scenes that are "unnecessary."
