The Lone Ranger

Disney is gonna be paying Depp a hefty sum to do this. Not as much for Pirates 4 but still pretty steep.

Deadline says Depp had a pay-or-play contract, meaning that Disney has to pay him whether they make the movie or not. Crazy.

I do feel a bit bad for Armie Hammer but he's getting other big roles so he'll be fine.

Variety is now saying they're gonna re-tool it to bring down the costs.

How the hell did it ever get to a $232 million budget in the first place!?

Because Disney loves the Depp.

^I don't blame them, he's the only reason the Pirates movies are still going. If it weren't for him they'd be a couple of billion dollars lighter, at least. Gonna try to duplicate the success with the people involved.

Edit: Double Post, SHH is at it again

Unless there's zombies and steampunk, I don't see how the budget would be over 200 million. For a western??

Maybe Verbinski wants to do some pretty expensive set pieces. Shootout in a giant dust storm.

I was reading the news at /film and I immediately thought the same question.

This is kind of ridiculous when you have directors out there like Neill Blomkamp and Gareth Edwards who make big scale films with hardly any budget.

There also a part of me who thinks the meh success of 'Cowboys and Aliens' played a role in Lone Ranger's shut down..

^It's an apt comparison because MOS planned budget is $175 million. That can certainly go up but compared to Lone Ranger's proposed budget its a lot less.

Well, this is a bummer. Oz: The Great and Powerful's and John Carter's budget is quite high as well and the movies Disney has this year didn't do that well besides Pirates 4. I still surprised over this since Bruckheimer and Depp has proven their movies to be a success but it's perplexing that the budget for this was up to more than $200 million, I guess they are lot of action set pieces that were planned for this. I'm still hoping that they could find a way to lower the budget for this even more.

Fine. A western doesn't need to cost that much.

...and not to mention that Captain America's was a lesser quantity of $140 million.

a summer blockbuster today can not have normal horse action and some gun fights. not from Disney. there would be huge action scenes.

If this movie gets a sequel expect Tonto to be the focus or just call it

"Tonto: On stranger plains"

guys 232 million was after they tried to bring budget down it was 250 million before lol

This was planned for a Christmas time release, that can certainly be moved up but over the top action isn't needed.

Okay, how in the hell did The Lone Ranger EVER go over 230 mil! Heck, how did this ever go over 100 mil! There is no reason to invest that much money into a film about the Lone Ranger, I am sorry. If I were a movie producer, and you pitched me Lone Ranger movie with a 125 mil price tag, I'd laugh and tell you to leave my office. Now, 230mil...I'd prob laugh at you for hours, make you feel small and cry, then tell you to leave my office in a sundress.

Tomorrow we'll hear in Variety about the adaptation of Little House on the Prairie running upwards of 280 million, with WETA doing most of the CG work.
