Entertainment Weekly talked to Johnny Depp about playing Tonto in the upcoming Gore Verbinski-directed The Lone Ranger, to be produced by Jerry Bruckheimer.

"I think it's going to be good, when we have a chance to put it up on its feet," Depp said. "What we've got so far screenplay-wise is really great, really funny."

Depp, who is part Cherokee, added that the Tonto character will be different in the feature film. "I always felt Native Americans were badly portrayed in Hollywood films over the decades. It's a real opportunity for me to give a salute to them. Tonto was a sidekick in all the Lone Ranger series. [This film] is a very different approach to that partnership. And a funny one I think."

It has not yet been announced who will play the title role and no release date has been set.

That's the one and you should check it out. It's been nominated for Eisner Awards for best new series in 2007. It's just so wonderfully written. The characters are 3-dimensional. It's The Lone Ranger done more on a deeper dramatic level ala "Open Range" and "Once Upon A Time In The West". I mean, here Tonto is most certainly no sidekick. He's essentially the power behind the mask of John Reid.

At this point I'm not expecting the film to be as deep as the comic series(it is freakin' Disney), but as long as Verbinski and Bruckheimer can manage to create a fun epic like POTC and Mask of Zorro, I'll be content.

Well, in "Once Upon A Time In Mexico", Depp was pretty much the main star. However, that didn't diminish in any way El Mariachi's part in the film, imo. If that same strategy is used in "The Lone Ranger", it should be ok.

It will depend if Depp downplays it this time around though. If he pulls a Jack Sparrow/Willy Wonka/Mad Hatter deal, ehhh.

...it will also depend on who they pick for the title role. Eric Bana, Matthew McConaughey, Brad Pitt, and Michael Fassbender all have sufficient charisma and presence enough to hold their own when with Depp.

Depp was only a supporting character in Alice in Wonderland. It was the marketing that made it seem he was the lead of the movie. But in the actual film his screen time is no longer than most of the other supporting characters. Hopefully his Tonto doesn't overshadow the Lone Ranger.

I suspect they'll play the relationship in the same vein as The Green Hornet movie as Tonto being slightly more capable than the Lone Ranger or something like that.

It's been a long time since I watched the Lone Ranger, but I never really understood how a guy with a permanent sidekick (Tonto) is considered "lone."

Now that this movie sounds like it's going to focus more on Tonto it makes the whole "lone" name seem even more pointless. Because if the story is really shown through Tonto's eyes then every time we see the Lone Ranger, Tonto will be there.

He was a member of the Large contingient of Texas State lawmen known as Texas Rangers....after he and his small area group of Texas Rangers were ambushed and killed (except for him who was only wounded)...he dicided to go out as the LONE ranger to continue fighting crime. Tonto was never a member of the Rangers...so even though Tonto rides with him....Reid is still a "lone" Ranger.
