The Lone Ranger

I just don't get it though. Is Tonto not recognized basically as a big racist stereotype for Native Americans? Or do Native Americans in fact like this character and like that Depp is playing him? I know Depp recently got some sort of recognition or award from the Native American community.

Tonto is brave, intelligent, fights for the rights of all people, helps those in need, endangers his own life to protect others......

Or a bird wears a Tonto on it's butt.

Is the Dynamite Lone Ranger series any good?

I was speaking of the previous Tontos......not sure how they plan on depicting this version....other than making a joke of him that is.

I've seen nothing indicating Depp's Tonto will be a coward or buffoon. Aside form the bird hat anyway.

The first story arc, the origin introduced Reid( much younger version, who more evolves and grows into the role, rather than just emerging fully formed the day after), Tonto (his past), the capture of Silver and the hunting down of Cavandish was all pretty good, although it strays some from the original and goes a bit dark, it's an understandably more modern perspective, and if your already familiar with the story it helps that it feels "new", otherwise what's the point of telling the exact same story.
It was a bit slow (over decompressed) at times purchasing the monthlies, but I would recommend it in trade, it looked beautiful too, covers by John Cassaday , art by Sergio Cariello.
I haven't read the subsequent stories.

I think they're just going to play him as kind of a little off, but in a quiet way. He may be very stoic, but much more serious.

Yeah, I know, was just trying to have a little fun. I think this Tonto will be a lot like Captain Jack from the first POTC. Funny/bizarre on the outside to those inhabiting the world, but with wit and depth underneath.

That doesn't mean he's not a racist stereotype.

I can understand why the original radio version and the movie serial and old tv show's portrayal may be seen as a stereotype. However, do you see Tonto's character in the Dynamite comic series as a stereotype? And if so, how? I'm curious..

No, in general, Native Americans don't like this character, but we don't get up in arms and take to the streets to ***** about Tonto. Instead, we jeer and make fun of the character as the way white folks think we're supposed to look and act. We regard Tonto the same way we do "chiefing" --- that's where we dress up in big goofy eagle war bonnets and and dance around and whoop it up for the white tourists who throw good money at us for being "authentic Indians." Even though it doesn't even remotely resemble who we are, unless maybe you're Lakota or Cheyenne.

Rogue Trooper, this isn't based on the Dynamite Comics. And the Dynamite Comics version is NOT the original version of the character. The Dynamite Comics are only a recent development.

I'm not really sure how that's an argument.

Yeah that's generally my view on Tonto, he's another sort of generic version of how white people think Native Americans look and act.

So it makes me wonder why Depp if he's all hardcore about his Native American heritage would want to play him.

Depp is far from hardcore about his native heritage (if such a heritage even exists). Although i believe this issue has already been discussed here.

Well, first of all, having read some details regarding the film's story, I can tell you that they are taking cues from the Dynamite series, such as the love triangle between The Ranger, his widowed sister-in-law, and Tonto. Who knows if they taking more details from Dynamite's run...

If Depp's characterization of Tonto is somewhat like the Tonto in the comic series, it probably won't be something you can easily label as a "stereotype".

Once again that doesn't absolve Tonto of being a racist stereotype character.

depp has flat out said tonto is not jack sparrow tho
"I'm a long way from Jack Sparrow," Depp says, while Verbinski adds that Tonto "is an odd-shaman, an outcast from his own tribe, who has created his own mystical world."

That isn't the first time I heard that. Then I watched the movie. The general idea is that Tonto will seem strange to the outside world, while being a more complete person with a working brain like Captain Jack in the first POTC.

They should of cast a relatively unknown Native American actor and let this movie bomb. I think that's what people are trying to say.

As opposed to casting a known actor and having it bomb. :woot:

Armie Hammer was on Jay Leno. He just debuted the first teaser trailer!

Very much a teaser, but looked good. Depp's Depp, but Hammer looked B.A.
