One wonders if a more modestly budgeted Lone Ranger film would have made more money. Or did the scale of this one, which appears to be the reason for the budget, create much of the draw for this film?

He takes over everything he's in with his repetitive shtick of over-the-top zaniness.

I think they could have gotten away with an actual Native American actor for Tonto, a semi-known guy for Lone Ranger like Hammer, and the rest of the cast being pretty well known actors.

The movie would have never even been made in that case. I've said this before but this is as much if not more a johnny depp-gore verbinski disney pirates of the Caribbean type blockbuster as it ever was a Lone Ranger movie.

If anything this was really just a vehicle they found for Depp. I don't think there were ever any recent plans to bring back the lone ranger franchise before depp got involved?

The movie would have never even been made in that case. I've said this before but this is as much if not more a johnny depp-gore verbinski disney pirates of the Caribbean type blockbuster as it ever was a Lone Ranger movie.

If anything this was really just a vehicle they found for Depp. I don't think there were ever any recent plans to bring back the lone ranger franchise before depp got involved?

Before this, I think the most recent thing was the failed TV pilot from the 1990's.

Yeah that fact has always made me roll my eyes a bit. He couldn't even keep what tribe his ancestors were supposedly from straight. It was very much saving face.

As to why they decided the call the film "The Lone Ranger"? well it still has some name cache. Most people have vaguely heard of that name even if they aren't familiar with the specifics.

I think I heard he's 1/8 of some tribe. Still though to me it's kinda like getting a white guy who's 1/8th black to portray a black character.

I thin if they made this under 100 mill. Cast semi known actors as Ranger and Tonto and then filled the supporting cast with well known names, and then the film was well received then I think this couldve been a success

However, much of the buzz from this came from Depp, Verbinski, as well as the budget i think

To be fair there was a lot of mixing between races, even in that time so it wasn't unusual for certain Native Americans to look white. I'm more concerned about the portrayal of their culture.

Not really. I'm not a Depp fan, but I've read him talk about having a Native American grandfather for years and years in interviews. He could very well be mistaken, but it's not something he just concocted for The Lone Ranger credibility.

It was actually his great-grandmother actually. I'm not saying it's something he's ever hid prior just that it wasn't until he was cast as Tonto that it's become that big of a thing he's spoken about.

Some native groups have actually taken him to task for that actually.

Like others have mentioned being native if less about who your distant ancestors were and more about an actual connection to the culture or tribes. If this wasn't just a johnny depp vehicle i'm pretty sure someone from an actual aborignal background would have been cast in the role.

It seems to be getting a lot of negative feedback here, but I enjoyed the heck out of it. The audience in the theater I was in seemed to like it a lot as well. Really fun, fantastic film. Might as well see it and decide for yourself! t:

I agree with what some others have said elsewhere in this thread, if you enjoy the Pirates of the Caribbean movies you'll probably enjoy this. I know I did (gave it an 8/10)

I disagree. I can't see a $250 million+ Lone Ranger film ever being allowed to enter production without an A-list star in one of the main roles (yet John Carter does exist). This was a deliberate attempt by Depp to confront some of the poor Indian iconography in Hollywood films, however ill-executed, so making complaints about Depp's dubious ancestry as if this is some kind of minstrel show is unfair. But then again, I'm not automatically against actors playing people of other races. Gary Oldman could almost certainly do a good anyone. Elements of hyperbolic parody, condescension, and mockery need to be there for censure to be justifiably potent, in my opinion, not just the appropriation of jobs from actors of the underrepresented race/background.

If you want to see this movie, watch the Mask of Zorro. Its the same exact plot and 100x better.

Go see this. Seriously. I honestly have no idea what people complaining about this film are talking about. This is probably better then the first Pirates. I am shocked, absolutely shocked that anyone can call this a bad movie.

I usually wouldn't say this. Usually I respect critics. But they are dead wrong about this film. I understand a lot of you and the critics don't like Depp now. I don't get it, but I understand that is how some of you feel. If this movie came out in 2003 the majority would have lost their minds. This was the first Pirates film, with a male lead that can actually act.

Depp was great here. Hammer was great. The whole cast is great. The film is swift, hilarious and insanely fun.

The film is the Lone Ranger by the way of Leone, mainly Once Upon a Time in the West. The reference to great Westerns are integrated seamlessly, and Zimmer's ode to Morricone, specifically Harmonica, is brilliant.

And what is this bull about this film noting being viewable for kids? 5 years old, yeah, I get that. I wouldn't show a 5 year old the first Pirates either. But This film doesn't even approach Temple of Doom craziness. This is Raiders in terms of content.
