The Lone Ranger - Part 2

Or if in some years later it becomes a major cult classic of the likes of Blade Runner
Or that.... but some years down the road and we might not get the cast of this one (which is one of the things I loved about this film)

I thought it was a lot of fun, I'm really only familiar the Lone Ranger and Tonto through some eps I saw on TV as a kid, so I don't know how many liberties it took with the mythos. I'm guessing it was never quite so humour filled, but taken on it's own merits it is a fun action adventure that shares (for obvious reasons) the DNA of the POTC and Zorro movies.

Depp didn't play Tonto as a Native American Jack Sparrow in my view and I thought most of what he did with the character worked, while Armie Hammer was the perfect straight man foil as the heroic and noble Lone Ranger.

The plot is convoluted and none of the characters are really fleshed out, but the story weaves a decent adventure narrative with some fun set pieces and two likeable lead characters facing off against cartoonishly wicked villains.

The last 30 minutes is truly epic, the dueling trains sequence with the classic Lone Ranger theme triumphantly accompanying the action is one of the most satisfying action finales I've seen.

7.5/10

Quentin Tarantino Lists The Lone Ranger Among His Ten Favorite Films This Year So Far

Well with Tarantino more interested in it than Batman and with his blessing I'm sure the sequel has suddenly been green lit and pushed to the front burner! Right?
No?

Maybe Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez can team up on Lone Ranger kills Zorro!

Didn't Disney own Zorro too? That kid from the last one can be grown up and meet the Ranger & Tonto:funny:

I finally got around to watching this. I'll admit I laughed at Johnny Depp's performance a few times and I did enjoy the ending, but not much else. I don't hate it like a lot of people, but I can see why it gets a lot of hate. It was way too long. They could have easily cut the scene with Helena Bonham Carter and trimmed down a lot of the first act. Much like the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, there was no reason for this to be a two and a half hour movie.

I saw this movie for a second time and it improved a lot my viewing experience. It is still too long, but the plot stands stronger, and the final action sequence is terrific.

I watched this last night and was really surprised to find I thoroughly enjoyed it. You could tell it was from the people who made the 1st 3 POTC movies but that was a good thing in my eyes.

Hammer as the Ranger and Depp as Tonto were great together and the movie had some really genuine LOL moments, most from Depp as Tonto reacting to something TLR did.

Same as Hunter I am not sure how much of the mythos was involved as it must be 20 years since I watched episodes of this on the TV but overall it was a fun action adventure with not only laughs but great action (the finale was superb), good characters and some truly despicable villains. Very surprised how much I enjoyed this, 7.5/10.

Shame we wont ever get a sequel. Only flaws would be it was over-long, and had some infinished CGI in too many spots. Also, still dont see how this cost what it did, they could have easily made this for $150 million IMO.

I saw the movie last night and was throughly disappointed...
Don tget me wrong it had its bright spots but...nahhh.
While I think Johnny dep did an outstanding job and he pretty much owned Tanto and made it his own.
The tongue incheek premise of everything else was just too much.
Its hard to appreciate this film when while your watching you feel they themselve have not taken into consideration the Mythos of the Character or its long standing. Its hard enough to take the idea seriously but even harder when they themsleves don't.To me it was a comedy with some drama.Sort of like 48 hours.
Its obvious Depp was the star as it even plays out in the roles they played.Tanto is an off his rocker tramatized Indian with a heck of alot of insight and the Lone Ranger is this innocent bumbling idiot who doesnt even know how to hold a gun.First of all this chemistry only works if there is at least one straight man.
Imagine two Costellos instead of an Abbott and Costello.
It just killed it for me as to I wish it had tooken itself a little no alot more seriously.
I belive this was a movie that really could have been over the top.To me the serious moments showed the potential it could have had.I think fans were insulted and non fans didnt understand the humor.
You had to be somone who knew of the Lone Ranger but didnt never really cared for him.
But that premise you would have found the movie way too long since you have no real concern or investment for the character anyway.
After a while I stopped caring for the guy to freaking grow a pair and do somthing.
Ugghhh and Good gracious when the song came on I cringed so hard at what I already felt was a bad movie.I still cant get my butt cheeks apart. It was aweful.I did wonder how the song could have been incorporated as the song has become a parody of itself at this point.I think the only way it could have been done is by revamping the whole song with a new updated sound.I was alone alone and still felt embarassed. The movie was a Parody of a Parody of what was once a serious content.By now we see it as campy but this was a very serious issue at the time it came out.Sort of like the same thing that happened to Batman in 60s TV series.Batman being created back in the 30s and 40s people figured by the 60s it was a joke to take seriously.Until sombody said HEY!!!There some serious content here.
Then and only then did Batman get revamped.
It was a Parody of a Parody and with Tanto belittling him it was a Parody of a Parody within a Parody.

I don't think it is as bad as people make it out to be. There's some things I liked about it. I freakin' love Zimmer's score BTW.
Agreed. I only saw this movie recently and found it to be quite fine. Not sure if I'd watch it again, but while I was it was enjoyable enough, with some good humour and action.

Got to see this tonight and was pretty pleasantly surprised. Depp was great, Hammer held his own, took me until damn near the end of the movie before I recognized Bill Fitchner. Had a good time playing "Hey it's that guy!" all throughout.

Some of the actions scenes were a little over the top for my taste; parts of them felt like they belonged in a 'everything-must-be-bigger!'-style sequel rather than a first entry. And I really didn't care for the weird framing device with Depp in the carnival booth.

But overall a fun time. I knew for a long time that this wasn't a more serious, 'Lone Ranger Begins' take on the character, and while that's something I'd like to see it won't be anytime soon.

3/5

I liked it. However it was to long and the plot was a little hard to follow. If it was two hours and better scripted it could have been a hit. Oh well. Westerns in general have a hard time making money at the theater now a days. There have been exceptions with Django and true grit. But even they didnt make huge dollars. And westerns actuallly are not as cheap to make as some might think.

I saw it a few weeks ago. I liked it but I couldn't find the money spent on it in what I saw. The reported cost was $225 million in the movie itself. Had it been less expensive (where did that money go?) I think it would've been profitable and considered more successful.

yeah but $250 million + marketing? That's insane and there was really no reason for it other than they went into it with the tentpole mindset. Where did all that money go besides some crappy CGI stunts and even worse looking cgi rabbits?

Open Range was not a big showy action film but it was excellent and only cost 22 million. It only made 68 million BO but it didn't have anywhere near the marketing behind it like The Lone Ranger did.

Anyway I'm just happy it didn't suck. I do agree it was a little longish, I felt the same way about PotC.

Finally watched this tonight (staying with the in-laws and my father in law has recently become obsessed with it). I really enjoyed it. It was a lot of fun, and that's what I wanted from it.

I definitely enjoyed it more than any of the Pirates sequels (which I liked, but did not love) and John Carter (which I thought was a mess), so it was a good comeback for Disney live action in my eyes. Too bad it was such a flop. Oh well.

Watched it yesterday on the ENCORE channel.......what a piece of crap. It should be subtitled - INSANE TONTO IS SMARTER THAN STUPID WHITE GUY WEARING MASK.

even the way the story is framed through old Tonto doesn't work, and it just adds more screen time for Tonto.

You guys are wrong, this move is AMAZING.
First off.....do not tell me MY OPINION is wrong. It is MY OPINION...I am not saying that others have to change their opinions to mine...I am stating MY OPINION on how I feel about a movie. If you do not agree with MY OPINION then you can say that you don't agree with it....but do not ever tell me that MY OPINION about a movie is wrong.

It is quite a bad one
Yep.

I remember when it was being made....some people were saying that Tonto would be treated with respect in this.....so, making him a mentally disturbed man who is a joke among his own people is being treated with respect huh?

That's cool, you don't have to like it.

I can understand why a lot of people didn't care for it. Is it a perfect movie? Heck no. Could things have been improved on the writing and could it have been tightened up in places? of course.

Personally, I still enjoyed it for what it was though (and seeing our beautiful south western desert formations and everything was a nice added bonus).

I don't think it's a bad movie by any means, I liked it in some ways; but I do believe they took far too many liberties with the property and it turned out to be just a vehicle for another crazy Johnny Depp character. Which is a shame.
