I really don't trust Sony when it comes to MJ.

They got her character so wrong, remember what Webb and the actors were saying during their press tour ? "MJ loved Spidey but Gwen loved both spidey and Peter".
Did they even read the comics ?

And Kristen and Shailene were definitely not the best pick either.

and that's why they ( Marvel ) have the chance to get MJ "right" this time around. the chance to create the definitive cinematic version of MJ, just like Tom seems set to be the definitive cinematic version of Peter/Spidey.

and that's why, imo, it would be a very bad decision to race change the character.

there's simply no need to create such controversy and divide the fans, especially when Tom seems so perfect for the role.

I want to see an MJ who looks and acts like she was ripped straight out of the comics - who's a combo of 616, Ultimate Comics, and SSM MJ.

That is why Kat McNamara is probably the best choice for MJ at this point

Well, mostly internet. The other is the friend of friend.:oldrazz: Sure it's not as reliable as Deadline but last time, I heard those kind of rumors it turned to be true (Spider-man being in the second trailer)
A lot come from Twitter, I'm not a fan of Comicbookcast (espcailly since he spoiled the post credit scene for me :)) but he did say one of the casting would break the internet, and a PoC!MJ definitely would.

It just also makes sense for Marvel to cast a PoC for MJ.
The lack of poc in their movies is one their biggest critic (see the doctor strange mess right now), so after 8 years I think Marvel is ready to fix that.

Marvel does pay attention to what DC does, in fact Civil War was greenlighted by the studio because of BvS. The DCCU is pretty unpopular right now but it got praises for his diverse cast (espacially in Suicide Squad). So it they want to beat WB (on that front anyway) they have to bring more poc in their movies.

Now, Marvel casted Tessa Thompson as possibly, Valkyrie so I could see them race swapping Mary-Jane as well. At this point, I'm going to be more shocked if they cast a white actress rather than a PoC for MJ.

Got'cha! Well, as I said multiple times before, I have no issue with whoever the actress is so long as the character in terms of essence and heart is kept in place. (Oh, and she has red hair for obvious reasons) :funny:

Yeah if they keep MJ in the spirit of the comics that means no race changing at all but then at the same time they have to cast someone mainly who can act but someone who actually looks the part too

Huh? The spirit of MJ isn't defined by race, though. :oldrazz: It's the way the character is written that makes up said spirit and essence along with the actress portraying her.

MBJ could've been a fantastic Human Torch, for example, if the writing was there for him to be (He was already in a lot of ways Johnny Storm if you just watched Chronicle), MCD embodied Kingpin, etc.

If the cast MJ as somebody as a different race that would've made this poll extremely pointless. XD

see. even you want MJ to have red hair. :cwink:

and that's why MJ has such an iconic, specific look ( the red hair ) that it would be hard to change her race, because the red hair just wouldn't look natural. it would look like a girl who dyed her hair red ( or with red streaks ) and that's not quite the same thing.

so, in MJ's case, matching that iconic look is important, imo.

but, I do agree with you on the larger point of the essence of the character being important. Ultimately, if they do go with Zendaya, Laura, or another non white actress, I want it to be because they felt that actress was the best they found during the auditions and who embodies the character the best. not just because they want to meet some kind of diversity quota ( change for change's sake ).

For instance, I'm watching the Ultimate Spider-Man series. I've only watched 5 eps, but I'm not sure I want to continue.

Why?

The characters in that show just don't act and feel like how the characters should be. Peter doesn't act like Peter ( too reckless, irresponsible, and immature ). MJ is suddenly more Lois Lane than Mary Jane.

and so forth.

Oh God pls, don't continue watching that Ultimate Spiderman show. It only gets worse. Peter gets more annoying. MJ is barely in the series. No love interest for Peter on the show also. For dumb reasons, the current Marvel Animation regime are not fans of female characters or romance on the current Marvel animated shows.

I wish Sony were the ones still making Spiderman animated shows.

No, she definitely isn't. Plenty of other actresses that would be more qualified for the role.

I loved Vincent D'Onofrio but visually I still prefer Michael Clarke Duncan strangely... he just felt like the character energy-wise.

thanks for the warning. ( though I have a hard time picturing how it could possibly get worse......lol )

yeah. I think I'm done with Ultimate. I can't bring myself to watch another ep.

especially coming off of watching SSM, Ultimate is such a giant WTF!! lol

Yeah, I definitely got a vibe from MCD that I felt was missing from D'onfrio in some aspects.

RIP MCD, my Kingpin of Crime.

What about
Katherine McNamara?

Considering the options on said poll, I think we're already way past that point.

What do you think guys? Lessen the romance levels in the MCU version?

Lmao same.

What do you think guys? Lessen the romance levels in the MCU version?

What's gonna do with MJ cast ? :p

MJ is not just a love interest she's also Peter's friend. MJ can be in the movie a lot and still not portrayed as a LI. That's what I'm hoping for, espacailly since they already casted Laura and Zendaya. Hopefully one of them is Liz.
They can do the romance with Liz and have MJ as nothing more than as a sassy neighbor in the first movie.

Yes! I hate the romance sometimes. Though they can make some flirting or teasing for future relationships. Also I don't want the love interest to be in danger every single movie just like the Raimi trilogy did to MJ.

Has it been announced which studio is casting the actors? Or is it both, like with Tom?

Hey, everyone.

I'm a huge Mary Jane fan, finding this thread was a gift. It's so.... interesting....

I just hope they get a really good actress and not just someone who looks like MJ.
