fidelity to the iconic look of the character.

technically, you could have a blond Superman or a blond Batman. changing their hair color would not change their character, as you say.

but you would never see a blond Superman or Batman ( unless in an elseworlds tale ) because those characters have such iconic looks that are ingrained in the public's mind.

I'm not talking about that; I was saying that MJ dying her hair red would change nothing. She'd still have red hair. Nobody would mention it. I really don't see what the issue is there.

see, I disagree with that, too.

Having MJ dye her hair red just seems like an unnecessary change to make. Even if they cast a white actress for the role, but had MJ dye her hair red, I'd still think that's stupid.

Again, using Clark Kent as an example, he's supposed to have blue eyes. But, in the new movie, he actually has brown eyes but wears blue contact lenses to have blue eyes.

that's so convoluted and unnecessary. just have the character have blue eyes to start with.

Just have MJ have red hair to begin with.

Or, don't even bother with the color change, especially if the character has to resort to using artificial means ( contact lenses, hair dye ) to achieve that color.

How about no MJ until a sequel? Same for Gwen and Felicia. Stick to Liz this time around.

I'd actually be kinda okay with Zendaya being Liz instead. (Maybe Laura's Sally Avril) But I think we've had a long enough break from MJ for her to be fresh in the GA's minds. After all, In 2017, it'll have been a decade since we last saw her.

How about no Gwen or MJ until the third movie? If Tom's plans are to last more than a trilogy and that he grows into the role like Daniel Radcliffe did with Harry Potter.

If she is MJ, they should just not bother to dye her hair red. Zendaya looks better as she is without having unnatural red highlights or if it's completely red. We'll all know anyway that this version of the character within the MCU (if she's played by Zendaya) won't have natural red hair but that it is just a dye job.

she's mixed race right? I've met & seen plenty of mixed race race girls with red hair and it looks quite good a lot of the time as long as it isn't too bright red and remains on the subtle side

 it's like you read my mind

But honestly, what does him 'growing into the character' have to do with excluding MJ? She could grow into the role over the course of three movies too. Radcliffe, Grunt and Watson played their characters starting from movie 1 all the way to movie 8. The core three peers were always present. (This would especially work well for a Barbieri version of Harry who looks like he's about to grow up in very big way)

Not a lot of people were talking about saving her for College before Zendaya's name came into the mix. I personally think shelving MJ for another five-six years would be completely unnecessary as she hasn't been used for 9 years to-a-decade and there are many ways for Marvel to completely reinvent their version of the character from Raimi.

Now look, i wouldn't boycott the movie or anything like that if Liz (or even an original love interest) ended being the main girl of this trilogy -- But I think not including MJ from the start would be a missed opportunity because as you said about Radcliffe, I want see an actress who evolves/grows into the character, and I'd much prefer to see her do it WITH Tom/Peter like Ultimate & Adventures (the former of which Watts is taking heavy inspiration from)

So yeah, I kinda do hope Zendaya is MJ and I hope she makes the role her own and channels the spirit of the character.

This is what I'm saying. I'd rather have MJ (if played by Zendaya) just not be a redhead than making the character someone who dyes her hair red if it's not going to look natural at all.

I think it's a given we'll have MJ anyways, given that interview Barry posted a bit ago with Laura Harrier being asked about a Black MJ to which she responded she couldn't answer it. :spidey:

Not saying we won't have MJ in this film (cuz it is a genuine possibility), but how on Earth does that confirm her appearance?

It doesn't confirm anything, it just makes it more likely. Again, add in what we already know (as far as inspirations go) and it really seems like it'd be a no brainer to include her.

Still would prefer Zendaya as Liz Allen or Michelle Gonzales or White Tiger. I'm with others, if MJ and Gwen are to be in this new rebooted series, I would rather save them for the sequels. I'm sorry but MJ, Gwen, and even Harry don't need to be race-switched for the sake of diversity. I know some people won't like me saying that but I just fail to see the point. Not to say I didn't mind Ben Urich being race-changed or some of the other changes Marvel has made over the years, but the Spider-Man universe is widely diverse and there are plenty of characters in Spider-Man's mythos that are a different race already they can bring into the fold or have not been seen yet then instead changing someone for the sake of changing.

I don't care if Zendaya is MJ or not but I will laugh so hard at certain fanboys if she is.

So you'd be okay with them 'race changing' White Tiger and taking away the opportunity for an ACTUAL Latina actress but not MJ? :K, then. Find it hilarious how some people do want MJ in this movie solely because they don't want her to be bi-racial.

An MJ who isn't white is better than no MJ at all imo.

That seems to be the new thing for some reason.

  • "GIVE US MJ! WE'VE WAITED SINCE 2007 TO GET A PROPER MJ ON THE BIG SCREEN!"
  • Zendaya surfaces who has a role shrouded in mystery, with suggestion that she could in fact be Mary Jane
  • "WHAT?! A (potentially) BLACK (bi-racial) MJ?! FORGET WHAT WE SAID ABOUT WANTING MJ IF ZENDAYA IS PLAYING HER. WAIT UNTIL LATER!"

An MJ who isn't white is better than no MJ at all imo.

An MJ played by an actress who could very well embody the role is far better than no MJ at all. Who cares what her race is, honestly? If an actor/actress seems good for the role and works for whatever vision is being presented, they should be given the role. Case closed. There have been some exceptions to this rule, such as MBJ as Johnny Storm, but that had nothing to do with him as it was all on the garbage that was Fan4stic. Trank had an awful vision for Marvel's first family and it showed in everybody's performances, Jordan's included.

With the MCU, a lot of people have good faith in 'em because they've earned said faith with every blockbuster they've released, so if Zendaya is MJ, I really hope the ones that are crying foul over her potentially being the character will at least give her the benefit of the doubt as opposed to throwing hissy fits that she's not White nor a natural redhead.

Disclaimer: I'm obviously bias because I've supported the idea of Zendaya as MJ since she was first revealed to be in Homecoming, which has caught me flack by some stating I'd want it to happen for the sake of diversity which is not true at all. I care more about the personality and embodiment of a character brought to life than I do comic book art accuracy from page-to-screen and I truly believe with stuff I've watched of hers over the past few months that she'd give us a truly great Mary Jane Watson if given the opportunity. I will not lose sleep if she is not in fact MJ, either, but I just want Mary Jane done well exceptionally well and I believe she could give us just that.
