Homecoming The Mary-Jane Casting Poll - Part 3

That seems to be the new thing for some reason.

  • "GIVE US MJ! WE'VE WAITED SINCE 2007 TO GET A PROPER MJ ON THE BIG SCREEN!"
  • Zendaya surfaces who has a role shrouded in mystery, with suggestion that she could in fact be Mary Jane
  • "WHAT?! A (potentially) BLACK (bi-racial) MJ?! FORGET WHAT WE SAID ABOUT WANTING MJ IF ZENDAYA IS PLAYING HER. WAIT UNTIL LATER!"

:pal:

Pretty much this. I've seen some of the same people (no offense to anybody) saying exactly that and fancasting MJ in the last two parts of this thread. But now, suddenly, when Zendaya's name pops up, they think Marvel should wait until the sequel or next trilogy. :whatever:

An MJ played by an actress who could very well embody the role is far better than no MJ at all. Who cares what her race is, honestly? If an actor/actress seems good for the role and works for whatever vision is being presented, they should be given the role. Case closed. There have been some exceptions to this rule, such as MBJ as Johnny Storm, but that had nothing to do with him as it was all on the garbage that was Fan4stic. Trank had an awful vision for Marvel's first family and it showed in everybody's performances, Jordan's included.
This. Initially didn't want Zendaya as MJ because like other fans, I wanted her to be Caucasian & a non-Disney channel actress. But after seeing interviews, I think Zendaya would give us a a great MJ & embody the character, perfect personality for MJ. Plus, we'd finally get an MJ with model-esque looks, something Fanboys have been yearning for since 2001 and ****ting on Dunst & especially Woodley for not having them in their opinion.

With the MCU, a lot of people have good faith in 'em because they've earned said faith with every blockbuster they've released, so if Zendaya is MJ, I really hope the ones that are crying foul over her potentially being the character will at least give her the benefit of the doubt as opposed to throwing hissy fits that she's not White nor a natural redhead.

The latter complaint i've been seeing is ridiculous considering that most of the actresses' names that were being brought up since before Zendaya even came into the mix weren't even natural redheads anyway. But again, it's now become an issue, suddenly.
Disclaimer: I'm obviously bias because I've supported the idea of Zendaya as MJ since she was first revealed to be in Homecoming, which has caught me flack by some stating I'd want it to happen for the sake of diversity which is not true at all. I care more about the personality and embodiment of a character brought to life than I do comic book art accuracy from page-to-screen and I truly believe with stuff I've watched of hers over the past few months that she'd give us a truly great Mary Jane Watson if given the opportunity. I will not lose sleep if she is not in fact MJ, either, but I just want Mary Jane done well exceptionally well and I believe she could give us just that.
I agree. If she's MJ i'll embrace it. If not, then i'm fine with that too. Win-win for me as well.

Uhm, not to bring up the hair thing again, b/c even I don't think she would be a redhead in the movie b/c Marvel and Hollywood in general live in boxes, but you don't have to be white or biracial with a white parent to have red hair.

The continent of Africa is not the most genetically diverse continent in the entire world b/c it has white/caucasian people living there. There are tribes where albinism pops up frequently, there are tribes with people with blonde hair, there are tribes of people with blue eyes.

Having someone with red hair and freckles is actually a frequent thing for black families, and there are a lot of latinas who are redheads, Bella Thorne being one example although she is biracial or rather bi-ethnic so not really a good example.

But since these types of things like blue eyes, green eyes, blonde hair, red hair, freckles are associated with white/caucasian people, when you have someone like Zendaya possibly taking on a character who has one of these characteristics, Hollywood is like *shrugs* guess she's not a redhead, cause non-white people don't look "natural" or "there's no such thing".

The choice of 'which actress?' does play a role in this however what you've described is mostly gonna come down to the writing. We've seen great actors in roles that should have been exceptional, based on their talent or charisma or whatever, and ends up being lackluster due to the writing. Andrew Garfield is a perfect example of this, imo.

I'm in the same boat though...I'm not as obsessed about the actress as many on here seem to be, but rather I care more about how MJ is represented. IMO, she's one of the best, if not the best, supporting character in either Spider-Man or Marvel. I'd love to see the 'real' MJ in a Spider-Man movie done exceptionally well.

This in a nutshell.

Pretty much. Unless there's a slight chance they had her hair purple first to dye it red but that seems super-duper reaching and unlikely.

Interview magazine, with Laura.

ORTVED: You're going to be in Spider-Man! Are we getting a black Mary Jane?

HARRIER: I can't tell you. We're starting filming in June

Let's not forget, MJ would never wear those clothes or wear 'natural' makeup like that!

I agree if she's MJ looking like that, I'm already disappointed. They've already ****ed up her character then for the sake of being different from previous installments.

Maybe MJ looks like Zendaya in those photos for the whole movie. Her name is Michelle, and only at the very end she dyes her hair red and calls herself MJ, once she's earned that name and become the character.

Maybe she shows up at the end with red hair and the classic MJ look while Peter is wearing a Letterman sweater and says "tell me about it... stud... I mean tiger."

She's the "Michelle/Michele" character officially. Not Liz, not MJ, not Michelle G., not White Tiger but just Michelle/Michele.

I do think they may've looked at a few characters for her character though, with Kate Bishop being an immediate thought given the purple in her hair.

lol!

Obviously they've toned down the makeup and glitz. She's playing a server/waitress there. The hair color doesn't rule out anything. It would have been ridiculous if they gave her fake red. We know how that turned out in the Raimi series. Looks like she'll be a high school friend/new girl at school that goes with Parker to Homecoming.

If she were MJ, at least they could've given her straight hair. At the moment she doesn't look anything like MJ in those pics but just some random girl.

She's MJ guys, just get over it...

Maybe MJINO. She doesn't look anything like MJ in those pics.

Definately not MJ. And how old is Harrier she looks to be in here 20s.
