I felt all three films were incredible. Say what you want, but its what I think.
Each has its own individual strengths and trying to compare The Matrix to The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions is like apples and oranges.
The Matrix was fresh and original, part of the 90s cinematic revolution. It was thought provoking and entertaining all at once, deep enough to warrant lots of discussion, but also had enough new special effects and action to thoroughly entertain. I brought a decade f incredible films to a close with the biggest bang ever, and has since become an acknowledged classic with a great deal of influence on sco-fi movies such as Equilibrium, etc.
The Matrix Reloaded, which of course not as fresh and original, seing as how it was a sequel, proved just as thought-provoking as its predecessor, albeit with more obscure philosophical themes. The spceial effects were vastly improved, as well as the action. Though not as influential and original as the first film, it still proved to be a thoroughly entertaining thrill ride.
The Matrix Revolutions finds itself unfortunately on the heels to two already great films, so any flaws are going to be judged far more harshly when compared to the other films. The main flaw being the lack of time spent in the matrix, where all the best action, philosophical dialogue, and overal entertainment lies. However, the special effects used for the battle of zion were only outshined by the final battle between Neo and Smith. On that note, the climax of the movie is more than worth the wait it takes to get back to Neo's journey. Personally, that final battle through the rain of the city ovverrun by Smith, now taking one of the apocalyptic turns in movie history. Even most disaster films based on reality didnt have near the impending sense of doom that the climactic battle had.
All in all, I find that the trilogy was easily the best sci-fi series after Star Wars, and deserves way most credit than people give it.
