The Matrix Resurrections

New Nightmare is one of the better and more meta Nightmare sequels, and the most original of the bunch. It was a very clever concept that unfortunately came at the tail end of a dying franchise. Also directed by Wes Craven.

I love meta fiction but I’m having trouble figuring out how a meta story about the Matrix will work. Is the new iteration of the Matrix acknowledging Matrix 1-3 as “movies” only? Is Neo a fictional character? Kinda weird but we shall see.

I'd be surprised if it went to New Nightmare levels of meta. It looks as though the events of the trilogy did happen in this universe, and the references seem to stem from Neo once again awakening in a simulation. Glad not to know for sure.

The meta stuff is brilliant because its the machines retconning/rebooting their own computer universe. Now the events of the trilogy are "movies" that people watched, but they actually happened (or did they?).

New Nightmare is one of the best ones. It did the meta thing before Scream even. Very ahead of its time.

I loved it haha, but I was about 1 years old when it dropped, so I don't remember well how it was received.

I just have a real issue with sequels being all like, “Guess what! Everything before this was fake. Here’s the REAL story.” Talking about the Matrix like this makes me think they’re going to Blair Witch 2 this whole thing.

I think it's more the originals happened, but the machines are trying to convince everybody (especially Neo) that it was just a movie. I may be wrong but that's just the impression I'm getting from the trailers.

I will probably be watching this on the 27th.

Its smart, and fits with the ending of the last movie as well.

If that’s what is going on, then it might work. I guess we’ll see.

They aren't movies, they are video games

People have started seeing this and sharing their comments in Reddit and.. they are not particularly positive.

They say it's bland, too meta, not a lot of standout action sequences either (apparently the fight choreography and wire work is considerably weaker than in the previous films) and apparently the film is a comedy (?) with lots of comedic bits in the first act. I also read tgat it feels more like a fan-film set in the Matrix than a full on lived-in sequel and is more akin to the likes of Cloud Atlas than the previous Matrix films.

I am still hyped to see it, but these initial reactions are a bit worrying.

With the Wachowski's I'd rather see it for myself than base it on some people on reddit. I feel like people miss the point to their stuff, however flawed it may be and are more turned off by superficial details than critiquing it on its own terms.

I rewatched the Matrix sequels last night, and while they have problems, I get what Lana was saying about it being a structured piece like an orchestra. Funnily enough, I liked Revolutions better than I remembered and Reloaded less than I remembered. Reloaded's ending was crap. It wasn't a good cliffhanger. It was like they cut off part of a movie. The movie could have continued all the way up until when Smith kills the Oracle. That's a great cliffhanger.

Revolutions honestly could have been a 90 minute film and worked fine. I did get chills at the ending of Revolutions when Sati asked the Oracle if they'd see Neo again.

That's just one reaction so far though. Someone else said they love it, so I'm expecting it to be half and half which is what I was expecting from the start. I'm still hyped haha.

There are at least 3-4 reactions on the Matrix sub that share the above common concerns.

Just got back from my viewing. Didn't see any ratings, reviews, impressions. Went completely clean outside two trailers.

Not gonna write a review, but it was eh... Didn't hate it, didn't like it either. There are some good moments and ideas, but they're buried under uninspired, uneven, incoherent and shallow. Despite the movie's initial attitude towards sequels, franchises, it eventually becomes the very same thing.

Jonathan Groff is probably the stand out for me. He makes a good villain. Henwick looked cool, but didn't have much to do, like basically everyone from the new cast, except for Groff and NPH.

I can’t handle anymore franchise disappointments. I hope it’s at least decent.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a movie where so many of the early reactions are like, “This is amazing! People are going to HATE it!”

lol
