The Matrix Resurrections

Why this film was made is a part of the movie's actual story. WB is rebooting or continuing every piece of formerly proper IP they have like Space Jam and Dune. They're desperate for money in the age of Disney dominance as new IP is almost certain death at the box office.
Yeah they talk about it in the film itself, that was the only real interesting part of the film. But they dont have any New thing to show, its all rehash. Nothing New happens.

This definitly is the TFA of this franchise.

The point was in the title.
Resurrect Neo and Trinity using a fourth movie and a happier ending.
And the movie also introduced Bugs (Jessica) as someone they could continue to use/explore if Carrie and Keanu aren't up to any more continuations.

Damn. I'm still super interested because I'm dying to know how the movie can somehow be such a dud but also a brilliant masterpiece to others. But I can't lie, it's a bit deflating to my hype seeing the overall narrative average out to "it's ok". Guess it's best to go in with lowered expectations, but it's kind of a bummer to have to go into a my most anticipated film of the year with that nervous "I hope I'm not super disappointed" feeling. I still maintain that regardless of what I think, I will respect the hell out of Lana Wachowski for taking big swings and taking chances with it. And I would include putting an earnest romance story at the center of an action franchise is a big swing in and of itself these days.

That kind of tracks for me. This film is sort of more interesting as a curious artefact than as another chapter in the ongoing continuity. It is more concerned than ever with the sensation of being lost, and while there is some interesting lore, you don't get as complete a picture as you did with the past sequels.

The closest thing to this that I can remember was Twin Peaks: The Return, although Resurrections is much more approachable.

The difference between the two for me is this movie was meh and Twin Peaks The Return was amazing

If the movie truly was going to be made with or without a Wachowski involved, and will probably be exploited in the future with or without a Wachowski involved, I still think there is some beauty in Lana going out guns blazing with a strange subversive trip of a film that it sounds to be.

All fun and games until we get The Matrix Dark Fate.

Then again Resurrections was sort of DF-ish.

This is accurate. I just don't think the film stuck it's landing.

Maybe Lana wasn't too interested in the action side this time around, but it is odd how rough and lame the action is.

Much better than Dark Fate, in my mind. Not as good as the other 3 films in the Matrix trilogy, but better than Dark Fate to me haha.

I will say, one thing that i think will work in Resurrections favor over the years is it feeling more like epilogue (as one user pointed out). I will include it in future rewatches of the whole series.

Esquire - The Matrix Resurrections Reboot, Explained - Why did Lana Wachowski Make Another Matrix?

According to Hollywood Reporter, Warner Brothers confirmed a Matrix reboot back in 2017 and was originally going to hire Marvels writer Zak Penn to work on a treatment before Lana Wachowksi agreed to get involved. Evidently, she was also inspired to return to the franchise after the death of her parents. Now, why Wachowski felt the need to cheekily address her decision and her history with Warner Brothers in the film itself remains a mystery. I guess we’ll just have to wait for The Matrix 5 to find out.

I went in expecting to pretty much hate this, but I didn't. I don't think it's a brilliant masterpiece like the first for sure. But it kept me interested throughout. I liked they did answer some important questions that you would wonder after watching the original trilogy (about the Machines, Zion, etc.) And no, Neo didn't get the Jake Skywalker/The Last Jedi treatment, thank God. The new standout character is easily Buggs. And that was pretty much the only new stand out for me...

But there were a lot of things that bugged me. Certain actors just didn't really fit in this universe I feel. The music... very bland, very safe. The action... very bland, very safe. Why? I don't understand that. I understand certain recasting from a story perspective, but not having the two big ones missing from this film and having other actors play them really effected it. I don't think the movie even looks as pretty/cinematic as the original, which is also quite sad. Personal preference with that I guess, but nothing amazed me. No ground breaking effects, nothing that made my jaw drop, so that was a bummer.

I think the first hour was the most intriguing and I really liked the set up. But torwards the end, I just kinda questioned the whole point of the movie lol. Am I suppose to? Idk. I think the movie is still worth watching if you're invested or interested in the Matrix world. But it's definitely on the bottom comparing all films.

I dont think it was money. I think the movie literally tells you what happened. WB approached the Wachowskis and said "how about another?!" and they said "no." Then WB said "ok fine...we'll get James Gunn or someone else to do it" and then like pretty much any creator thats territorial about their creations they reluctantly agreed thinking "if anyone's gonna run this franchise into the ground it might as well be us."

A very small example that something is just off with this film.

Zak Penn was on this project for like a year and made bold claims like this wouldn't be a reboot. Then his version got abandoned.

If that's true about the Wachowskis bing appalled by Penn's script, I kind of want to see what was in it. Same with his Avengers script that Joss Whedon threw in the trash. I've never found Penn to be an especially good or gifted screenwriter, so it makes me curious what impact he had on those projects.

Besides the bad action, my main problem with the movie is it introduces so many ideas without adequate explanation. And then it uses so many pointless things. Digital sentient AI Morpehus, who fades into the background after the first act. Smith 3.0 who really didn't need to be in the movie either. Just nostalgia trip stuff that's just there for fan service. I like Groff as an actor, but I don't think he was a good Smith.

Lastly, I don't get the justification for bringing back Neo and Trinity when they were so adamant about killing them off to begin with. I mean they killed Trinity in the second movie only to have Neo bring her back and then kill her off again in the third movie, which is just gnarly storytelling to begin with. I still don't get what it is about Neo that makes him special and what's causing his anomaly-ness.

Even in this movie what abilities Neo has and what don't work don't make any sense.
