The Matrix Resurrections

The generally poor reception among movie goers (most YouTube channels didn’t like it either) and probable box office nose dive for this might be a blessing in disguise for The Wachowski’s. Maybe WB will leave this property alone.

I'll say this much.

I'm more interested in one crazy subversive sequel/epilogue from Lana Wachowski than I am the WB-controlled Matrix Cinematic/Streaming Universe launchpad that the typical crowd-pleasing version of this would've been. F*** that. Unless Lana did have further ideas she was looking to explore, then I'd be more open to it...hard to say without having seen the film.

At least even if this stops the franchise dead in its tracks it will make for an interesting footnote/experiment and we will be spared the Terminator treament of this being dragged out again and again by different directors to further and further diminishing returns.

Yeah he's the same guy that co-wrote Ready Player One and Free Guy. Both Matrixy type of movies.

Yeah. She probably had a reason to be appalled. Free Guy alone might be the worst movie I’ve ever seen. Using random IP in the climax just to get a rise out of the audience was the bleakest ****.

I honestly have no idea what people actually want and expect out of a Matrix movie besides 'gee whiz best special effects action'. My expectations for this movie were already low given how baffling banal and lame lore dumps the last two were outside of the long but well-shot action scenes. That's part of the reason why I'm not disappointed with the new one, it took a different tack with some success and some failure.

I didn’t find any parts of this movie to be ultra-woke so I’m curious why some people thought that.
People on both sides of the spectrum have been blowing this kind of stuff out of proportion. Just for clicks and money is all it feels like these days...

Yes, it’s become insufferable. Also both sides saying it’s not an action film. The action might not be good, but there is plenty of action and the climax is built around a huge action spectacle. Just all around odd discourse around this film. It has quickly become not fun to talk about,(not here. Here has been levelheaded) which is a shame.

I will say the fact that it seems almost everyone is watching the film at home versus theaters does not seem to be helping in terms of the reactions. People typing their reactions away and starting to tear the movie apart before they’ve even finished watching.

I want to like Revolutions more because it was more action packed, but that climactic fight went on for so damn long and made me bored. Even when I was a hyper teenager who loves Sailor Moon and DBZ, I was like this is going on for a bit long now.

i dont think anyone was expecting this touch the first Matrix, i think all of our expectations was "just be better than Revolutions and be entertaining." And IN A WAY it does that, it gives us a happier ending than Revolutions but its a messy slog to get there.

The DNA of a Matrix film has always been= 50% intellectual sci-fi and 50% badass, well shot action scenes to thumpin' techno music. Thats what makes those movies so unique. They were "smart" sci fi movies that entertained the Hell out of you, so at the very least on a base level you could be exhilarated with the action if all the exposition flies over your head. This attempt just felt half hearted in both, half hearted in the intellectualism and half hearted in the action and the thing with the Wahcowskis is, for better or worse, they never used to half ass ANYTHING they did. They go all in and swing for the fences and that makes even their most disastrous films like Jupiter's Ascending at least fascinating to watch. This for the first time in their careers felt like a shoulder shrug.

Everybody is entitled their opinion, but is anybody else annoyed hearing people say "Go see Spider-Man again in stead", which is kinda ironic since this movie was poking fun at those types of things. Not saying this was as good as No Way Home, but it's annoying to me.

The movie that killed Mila Kunis's blockbuster career. :argh:

Jupiters Ascending was atrocious, I have to say. A gorgeous film that i almost didn't finish.

I mean that still could happen. That's sort of the future with Predator and Alien right now.

I still haven’t seen No Way Home :o

The movie is bombing pretty hard at the box office right now.

This is what you reap when you put premium products straight to streaming first. They aren't as special anymore. They maintained this stupid release strategy long past it making any type of feasible sense. It doesn't even need to be a 6-week window. Give it 4 weeks at least. Theater owners likely would've understood and dealth with that.

The Catrix indeed.

When you're late to seeing a big pop culture film, it's become an odd experience to watch the discourse play out, and then you finally see it and you're like..."people thought that? really? weird." Just feels like a bunch of knee-jerk reactions.

I recorded a podcast last night with a few buddies (ongoing Covid-times project, yet to be titled/edited/released/probably never...lol) discussing the Matrix trilogy, and like....it was such a great conversation. We're still unpacking those movies 20 years later and it's fun to discuss the ideas and revisit all the rich themes those movies brought to the table. Including and especially the sequels, I'd argue. While I've always been a fan of the movies, my relationship with them has evolved over time. I don't expect to instantly have a complete read on the new one after one viewing.

It might, we'll have to see. But regardless, if this was a Wachowski's last go with the property and she has no intention for more then I'm glad at least she got to have some final say with it before it becomes another endless franchise. I do think Zak Penn alluded to the fact that his idea is still development.

Would be pretty funny if after all of this Lily Wachowski decides she has an idea for Matrix 5. :oldrazz:

It really is sad that this didn't turn out better because I actually think a proper Matrix sequel could have had a lot of potential, especially with Keanu being more popular than ever again.

It just seems like he isn't having much success outside of John Wick though and for me this was one of the biggest misfires of a sequel I have seen since Independence Day Resurgence.

I honestly disliked it that much and now that I think about it I have a hard time understanding why Warner Bros even agreed to this if they were going to half ass it this much outside of a quick cash grab.

Seeing how good Star Wars: Visions ended up being I'm surprised they didn't consider doing something in the vein of the Animatrix which would have been alot cheaper and easier to make.

An adult, animated Matrix show made for HBO Max would have been really interesting to see IMO considering the great reception there was for Animatrix back in the day.

Even if it was theater only it would’ve probably still bombed. This isn’t a crowd pleasing movie by any means. I admire that WB even released this weird mess (not a bad thing for me. I like messy and weird s**t).

Got you beat pal. I haven't seen Spidey OR Matrix. Boom!

So peace between man and machine led to an energy crisis which caused a civil war amongst the machines which led to them experimenting on alternative solutions. The faction that wanted to rebuild the planet sided with humans to help fix the biosphere. The faction that wanted to continue the humans as batteries used Trinity and Neo as guinea pigs and made a new Matrix built around them that purposely kept them apart, but in the process made Trinity an anomaly like Neo was in the original Matrix, correct?
