The Matrix Resurrections

I follow a lot of people that like the movie a lot. I wish I liked it as much as they did. I kind of get it: they dig some of the conceptual ambitions, the lack of self-seriousness, the sentiment (which was nice but didn't do a ton for me personally just cuz I don't care a ton about the Neo+Trinity relationship).

I don't hate the film, in fact I liked a lot of what it was going for, but I think the script needed a pretty critical final draft and the technical credits just weren't up to snuff for a Matrix movie, imo.

I feel the same way.

There’s a lot to enjoy in the film, and it’s not a total dumpster fire — although it was awkward and cringey at times. But a lot of the overly positive reactions are coming from people who seem to have made their mind up about the film even before seeing it. I don’t get the “masterpiece” talk at all, and this is coming from a guy who loves Revolutions.

Eh, I don’t know about all of that. Most of the people I know who loved it were unenthusiastic about it when it was announced. I think it scratches an itch for a lot of people bored by the usual franchise shtick and the fact this is in direct conversation with that is turning a lot of those people on to it.

A few posters have called the film half-ass and lazy. Regardless of whether you like the film or not, calling this half-ass and lazy is just flat out wrong. This is easily the most ambitious blockbuster of the year.

I think I just am really hungry for big ideas being explored in blockbusters, and I actually do care a lot about the Neo/Trinity relationship, so on paper I still think it could be for me. Basically just calibrating my expectations to "2021 Lana Wachowski film" and not expecting anything that will touch the technical elegance of the originals and hoping for the best.

When a film is divisive I usually end up understanding both perspectives to some degree, so I'm just hoping not to have an identity crisis over which pill I end taking with this film. :funny:

Ultimately, one of the factors in her decision to choose Bugs was that she didn’t want to put a lid on her fan-favorite Iron Fist and The Defenders character, Colleen Wing, potentially joining the MCU proper.

Yeah, no.

Dumb move lol

Yeah, if you care strongly about the Neo/Trinity relationship than that could go a long way for you with Resurrections.

For me it was more just a "aw, that's cute" type of thing.

I don't know, I have a feeling that she can have her cake and eat it too in this situation. Her star is rising regardless of how The Matrix Resurrections does, and I'm sure her name has been brought up in discussions at Marvel as to which characters from the Netflix shows will be coming back.

Maybe this angle is what convinced Keanu and Carrie-Anne to come back.

Have to say, ViewerAnon seems to have hit the nail on the head with his prediction of what the reception would be back with hits tweet in June:

The trend of nearly anybody whose opinion I respect digging this film is continuing on Twitter. Pretty uncanny. Trying to keep my expectations reasonably in check.

I would say he missed the head of the nail fairly wide.

I mean...he said he expected reactions to be wildly mixed. Check. And the people that love it really do seem to love it quite a bit. Check. *shrug*

Holy ****. I watched the first half of the film on HBO Max and I cannot believe how stupidly happy it has made me. I cannot believe this movie exists in the best way.

I COMPLETELY understand how it's not for everyone and a few of the meta jokes are really pushing it, but somewhere in the middle I started really falling in love with how this is contextualizing itself with the trilogy. It just feels great to be in the hands of someone who clearly has a deep understanding of the lore they created even as they take it in some very funky directions.

I'm going to save the second half for my theatrical viewing, this was a compromise to hold me over cause I was losing my mind. But so far this movie is punk rock as hell and it has cult movie energy all over it.

I have questions and gripes too, don't get me wrong, but a wave of joy just swept over me during a certain section that essentially did stuff that I think the Star Wars sequels suffered greatly for not doing.

Shame. :nono:

:p

It’s probably because I came in with such low expectations but I found myself enjoying Resurrections

Loved how the first half hour or so of the movie went all meta pointing out how pointless making another Matrix was lol

The story itself was a little all over the place but still decent enough to make for an enjoyable movie. It was nice to see Neo & Trinity again, like seeing old friends after so many years.

The action scenes and soundtrack weren’t as good as the previous films though. The film did feel a bit more smaller in scale compared Reloaded and Revolutions

Overall, a pretty enjoyable film. I can see why reviews have been all over the place though

Oh my God I just learned what is considered the "woke moment" in this film:

Trinity pretty much getting her revenge on The Analyst. Come on people. :funny:

I had a pre-booked 2nd screening from 2 weeks ago which I've now refunded. Having slept a few nights on it after my 1st viewing, I've decided not to torture myself going through it a second time.

I'd rather go see NWH for a 3rd time - at least I'll have more fun and won't get frustrated.

I am still angry on how generic Resurrections is - from the stiff acting, blatant TV show-like cinematography and action (the NPH slow-mo scenes were laughably bad), to the immersion breaking meta aspect. Can't believe how cheap and fan-fiction it felt like. And how the most interesting aspects of it are explained and shown briefly through a few seconds of exposition.

And constantly showing snippets of footage from an older and a much superior film from 21 years ago emphasized a lot on the cheapness of this one.

Not to be that person, but does anyone else wonder why the Machines never tried to colonize in space instead?

I guess space travel is just tech they weren't able to master? Polluted atmosphere makes it too difficult? But like if Matrix Universe machines can master what they have in this movie, I'm not sure why they can't go to space where they'd probably have much better access to solar energy. I guess it's same reason they don't have more advanced weaponry that could permanently wipe out their human enemies.

I'm still confused about what's going on with the whole Humans vs. Machines conflict. It seems like the war hasn't ended and it just splintered if anything.

When humanity rejected the Machines demand to coexist when 01 became a world superpower is when I think they should have said **** it and went to space.

I actually thought that was pretty fascinating in Animatrix. I wish the sequels explored those angles more. Yes, machines did enslave the human race...but...it was kind of our fault. Humanity basically started the war and made the surface uninhabitable. Like if Neo saw more of this, it could've been a better driving force to obtaining a truce with Machine race. Like we need to stop fighting and find a way to co-exist together.
