The Matrix Resurrections

Loved Henwick in this (and in everything) but I couldn’t believe a couple of the lines they gave her.

“Bugs… as in Bunny.”

“What’s up doc?”

YOU SEE BECAUSE BUGS IS THE NAME OF A BUNNY AND NEO HAS TO FOLLOW THE WHITE RABBIT AGAIN AND BUGS BUNNY IS WARNER’S MASCOT AND WE HAVE TO HAVE HER SAY HIS FAMOUS CATCH PHRASE OTHERWISE PEOPLE MIGHT NOT GET HOW CLEVER WE’RE BEING.

I feel like they gave her more to do in the second half than Modal Morpheus, who felt like a cheap pointless character to me.

There were a couple instances in the film where Modal Morpheus doubts and questions Neo. I would've emphasized him more as an adversarial good guy opposite Neo.

To me Bugs is a lot like Niobe and Ghost from the sequels. A cool character who looks cool and is there, but doesn't do a whole lot.

In her defense, Bugs' actions do sort of drive the plot forward after she discovers the modal, but she does have less to do in the second half.

It's just that when we do get to see her fight and in action, the fights are just so badly shot and choreographed and largely uninspired.

EDIT:

I think what the movie did with Smith was far worse.

I liked Henwick and Yahya both but I wished they had more substantial roles. It seemed like they were introduced with a lot of flair in the beginning but then they dissipated in the second half to make way for characters from the original trilogy. And even for some new ones that were barely characters. Like it was cool seeing the actors from Sense8 but their characters didn’t really do much. Especially Max Riemelt who was introduced so late but seemingly given a lot of importance for no reason.

I still don’t understand what was the point of having
Smith return. Like they try to make it like him and Neo are yin and yang which I guess works up to a degree but what reason do the machines have to bring him back? Neo and Trinity are brought back and kept close because “love” and “hope” and whatever but why bring back the program that nearly took over the entire Matrix the last time? And why was it so easy for him to remember everything? Apparently all it took was a little chaos and a gun for him to hold.

Yeah the Smith thing was weird. Since Smith is essentially a virus, I think it would have made more sense if the Matrix couldn’t actually destroy him and so they had to quarantine him and they made him a new person to nullify him (and then he ultimately regained his memories and got out). But it seemed that they intentionally kept him around to be the yin to Neo’s yang or something? It didn’t really make sense. And Groff is sadly no Weaving.

I still wanna know how Anderson MADE Nu-Morph in the first place? He made a sentient program while just... Making games inside the Matrix, or... What?

I liked Henwick in this quite a bit. Bugs and her crew were fun but it would have been nice to give them more to do by the end.

Never saw the appeal of the actress prior to this though. I feel like she earned a lot of love for not being terrible in Iron Fist, one of the rare exceptions, but Colleen Wing was merely okay for the most part too.

She’s really good in Love & Monsters. I’d recommend that if you haven’t seen it. Though her part isn’t very big.

I think the thing with Colleen Wing is that, Iron Fist was SO bad that delivering a good performance really made her stand out. Like, Finn Jones is the worst part but even if you swapped him out for a better actor (who could actually fight) it still would have been a bland, lousy mess of a show. Yet despite everything around her being crap, Henwick still created a character that was memorable enough that people wanted to at least see more of her.

Having time to process my thoughts on the Disney+'s Moon Knight trailer, it reminds me quite a bit of this movie:
Protagonist trapped in a world/mentality that is not his, living a life that isn't his familiar stuff, and getting visions of his true self while there is that doctor/person who wants him contained in.

I remember reading a similar story for Batman from the Legends of the Dark Knight series, difference is Bruce was trapped as a mental ward patient.

So I finally saw this and after reading some spoilers and seeing it compared to The Last Jedi, a movie I can’t stand, I was ready to be disappointed.

Well thankfully I really enjoyed this and as a fan of the first 3 movies don’t get a lot of the hate for this. I loved the new world they built and the nice surprise being humans and ‘sentients’ actually co-existing and working together. I loved that Neo and Trinity’s previous sacrifice was not in vain, and I loved the way they were brought back.

Trinity was always central to Neo’s story for me, so making her more so here didn’t bother me at all.

I also really liked the movie’s themes of accepting who you are and true love never dying. Also Henwick as Bugs was great, and the return of Sati was nice.

7.5/10

After thinking on it my only problems with the movie were Smith and Modalpheus, neither really seemed essential to the plot and maybe could have been cut with a bit explanation given as to what happened in Zion instead.

Also for all of the complaints I liked the action here. Neo Vs Smith was enjoyable, as was the quick scene of the machine civil war which I also wish we got more of. I thought the finale was really well done and especially found the dive bombers both disturbing and really good visually.

Finally saw this and... Yeah, not a fan haha

For context, I was a die hard Matrix fan. My friend and I saw reloaded 5 times in the cinema. I had those soundtracks on repeat. That series coloured my teenage years big time. But this movie not only felt entirely flat to me, I think it cheapened the ending of Revolutions?

For the record, I loved a lot of the ideas of this movie on paper. Story elements, worldbuilding etc. For example, loved the idea of some machines and humans existing peacefully... Yeah, great idea. Even loved the weird meta stuff. I eat all that stuff up. And making a Neo/Trinity romance the heart of the thing? Yes please, my favourite.

But the way it was all executed felt like a hot mess to me? I mean the entire film was tell not show and even then, still confusing? I feel like they took what was actually a pretty small, self contained story (compared to previous films) but still told it in the most convoluted way they possibly could?

Morpheus and Smith were weird and added nothing. There were SO many characters but they never actually let us get to know them, like the storytelling had ADD, it just bopped along without bothering to let you actually experience anything for yourself. I mean, compare the crew in Matrix 1 to this film. You spent time with them, got to know them. In this film, it really just felt like Lana was just giving all her old Sense8 mates a sweet gig.

And the Trinity arc... What a load of nonsense. I mean, you want to try and flip the tables and give Trinity more power and agency? Sure, great idea... Except they gave her almost no scenes? She spent most of the film as another object or goal for Neo, something for him to save.

Trinity really should have been treated as a co-lead and POV character but instead the whole thing just came off as cheap to me.

I lowered my expectations for this one and when everyone said it was weird and meta, I kinda thought I might still dig it because I'll always love something that aims for weird and different, even if it misses. But at the end of the day, it felt like just another one of the forced franchise sequels that the film was trying to make fun of.

I still find it crazy how much this flopped. Much worse legacy sequels have made a lot more.

Much worse legacy sequels also didn't have to contend with the biggest Spider-Man movie to date at the same time.

No Way Home, pandemic and HBO Max were all certainly factors on why it didn't do better than that. None of them are an excuse for a 10 million opening in the US. Outside fans of the previous films there just wasn't really any interest in this.

True. General interest in the Matrix franchise dropped pretty fast after Revolutions came out and never really recovered.

I'm so grateful Resurrections exist. I had a blast watching a new Matrix film in the cinema, and loved how cheeky it was. I'll take this over po-faced sentimentality any day. That rooftop jump was indeed stunning, but it's funny. The sky and everything looked so 'perfect' that my brain assumed it was fake.

I've just finished Sense8 for the first time and loved it. I'm going to miss those characters. Looking forward to a rewatch of this so I can point at all the familiar faces.

Hahaha honestly I think that was my biggest problem with this new Matrix, is it felt like a weird step back from Sense8? Sense8 felt like a real creative evolution of Lana's vision and then for me, this was like a weird halfway point between the two works. Like she wanted to make the Matrix via Sense8? Matrix characters with more of a Sense8 aesthetic (and almost all the cast lol). That was one thing that stopped me from connecting to it for the most part. It NEVER felt like it was the same universe as the other Matrix movies to me.
