The Mutants to Hit Cannes

It's going to be a good year for Hugh

I know our head honcho JoBlo himself was debating his return trip to the Cannes Film Festival this year but that was before this latest announcement. Cannes '06 will have a line-up that will be as impressive as any I've seen in recent years including recent additions X3, THE FOUNTAIN, OVER THE HEDGE, BABEL and PAN'S LABYRINTH in addition to the previously announced DA VINCI CODE and MARIE ANTOINETTE. Not to shabby, eh? Sadly, you'll also have to sit through 20-minutes of Oliver Stone's WORLD TRADE CENTER but don't let that ruin your good time. As you might expect, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND (God, I hate that title) will be screening out of competition though Darren Aronofsky's THE FOUNTAIN will play as part of the "official selection." Director Wong Kar Wai (2046) is the Cannes jury president this year, which has a decidedly more mainstream feel. There are still more titles to announce though it seems that films once considered shoe-ins like Steven Soderbergh's THE GOOD GERMAN, FUR with Nicole Kidman and THE BLACK DAHLIA won't be ready in time to premiere at the festival. One film still looking for a slot is CLERKS 2, which The Weinstein Co. is trying to align for director Kevin Smith. All-in-all sounds like a good time in the south of France this May.

Sounds like a good lineup ^. I'm going to be extremely nervous about the critical reactions. I really could see them going either way with X3.

V for Vendetta was shown in Berlinale (another prestigious film festival) and got good reviews. Cannes is even more important than Berlinale is, so it's a great exposure for X3.

Oh, and "noncompeting slot" means that the movie is not competing for any prize -the Golden Palm Tree Leaf- but it's just being shown to the critics. :)

Revenge Of The Sith was shown at Cannes and look at how well that was recieved and how well it did. My hopes are very high for X3 now!!

And what a pretty mess they did... stormtroopers escorting the fans who were dressed as their favorite characters, people sleeping at theatre's doors, lightsabers everywhere... unforgettable! :D

Not to mentio the debut of Natalie Portman's freaky bald head "V for Vendetta" look, I remember watching it live on Sky News and just going - "NOOOOOOOO!"

Hey, I had a similar hairdo -not that short- last year... :( Ah, OK, I forgot I'm not Natalie Portman. :D

Now serious, she looks great with any 'do she has!

I know I know, twas just a big shock to see Senator Amidala look so different!

Wait a moment, X-men is in the competition section or not? I read "not"

No, it's not. You read correctly.

I think so. I'm not too sure on it though.

Actor HUGH JACKMAN will have a strong presence at the 59th annual Cannes Film Festival, with two of his films debuting during the event.

X-MEN: THE LAST STAND and THE FOUNTAIN, both starring Jackman, have been added to the official selection at the festival.

Jackman stars with Oscar winner RACHEL WEISZ in The Fountain, which is directed by her fiance, DARREN ARONOFSKY.

SOFIA COPPOLA and KIRSTEN DUNST's costume drama MARIE ANTOINETTE will also be shown at the festival, as well as a 20-minute preview of director OLIVER STONE's movie WORLD TRADE CENTER.

Selections lining up for Cannes Film Fest

CANNES, France, April 5 (UPI) -- Hugh Jackman will have a high profile at the 59th annual Cannes Film Festival with "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "The Fountain" both making the cut.

Although the list of films selected for the prestigious festival is not due out until April 20, at least 12 films have already been chosen to compete, Daily Variety reported Wednesday.

It was previously announced that Ron Howard's "The Da Vinci Code" will kick off the festival with its world premiere May 17.

Definitely set for the competition is Sofia Coppola's "Maria Antoinette";
"Climates," by Turkey's Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and French director Nicole Garcia's "Selon Charlie," Variety said.

"X-Men: The Last Stand" will not be part of the competition but will be screened as will DreamWorks' latest animated film, "Over the Hedge," starring Bruce Willis.

Oliver Stone's "World Trade Center" will offer a 20-minute preview and the director will be honored during a 20th anniversary tribute to "Platoon," Variety said.

I´m so happy for Hugh! :)
And of course, very excited about X3 in Cannes!

Wow. This is actually a good sign. It means FOX not only is confident enough to screen it, but at the most publicized of film events. Nice. For awhile there I thought they might not even screen it for critics. Exciting news.

^^yeah i was thinking this, usually when a studio isn't sure about a film they don't want to risk bad publicity, Kinberg did say FOX was really proud of this film.

Didnt we get this news a long time ago from Kinberg?????

Over at Hollywood’s famous Chateau Marmont hotel, guests are not seeing things. Lindsay Lohan, America’s favorite whipping girl, has been spending time with “Rush Hour” director Brett Ratner. They’ve been seen together in various modes of dining and socializing in the lobby bar and garden restaurant, according to my Hollywood spies. Of course, Lohan been seen with lots of famous types at the Chateau, my sources point out.

***

Ratner, who’s said to be giving Lohan advice and providing a shelter to her from the gossip storm, is a little too busy to do anything else right now. He’s finishing “X Men III,” which will debut in Cannes a few days before its May 26 opening in theaters. The $200 million comic book adventure is said to be better even than episodes 1 and 2. I’m told the Cannes debut is so hot that the entire cast is being invited to the annual AmFar dinner in Mougins, where star Hugh Jackman may be asked to perform along with Elton John and other surprise guests.

^^^ 200 million?!?!? That's the budget?!?

Apparently so. So it's really going to have to sell it's ass off and sell more than X2, which made near 250 domestically I believe.

The initial budget for Vaughn was 190 million. It was bumped up to 200 when Ratner came on board

X2 made $214.9m in the US so we need a significant improvement on that.

I'm not sure whether these budget figures are exact or ballpark as different media sources tend to disagree quite often.
