The N word in Literature

I always thought it was silly how some people got offended by that. This a movie that, like most Tarintino movies, has tons of bloody violence and characters who cuss every other word. Of course it's offensive, that's sort of the whole point! How can you say "I was fine with Ving Rhames getting raped in the ass, but once they started throwing around the "N" word, they just crossed the line!" The whole damn movie crossed the line, that's part of what made it so enjoyable! People enjoy vulgar entertainment. Using that word doesn't make Tarintino racist. Hating black people is what makes someone racist. That's a distinction I'm shocked people don't seem to be able to make.

Totally agree.

LOL! Exactly Wilhelm. It'd be a pretty dull read if every character spoke with a silver tongue and was all sweetness and light.

It reminds me of the scene in Misery where the nutter Anne Wilks blows her lid when reading Sheldon's new novel. She doesn't like the bad language the characters are using. Sheldon simply replies that to give the characters a realistic weight, he had to have them speaking in a realistic way.

People do use the word. He isn't condoning it; he's stating a fact.

To clarify, I don't think Tarantino's a racist. He's just an egomaniac who writes himself into movies as a badass who verbally smacks down the stars of the movie. That's one of many reasons he annoys the crap out of me.

ZV, can't you make the distinction between the writer and the character he's (or she) writing about?

Fair enough.

Aye

Next time he dicides to draw the line, he should draw it on his head. In preperation for his lobotomy.

:hehe:

I use the n word at least 50 times a day at least. Does that make me a racist? The fact that I've never called a black person the n word, am I still a racist or perhaps I'm more of a racist because I'm promulgating the word of hatred. The fact of the matter is the n word for better or worse has become part of the lexicon of many different peoples in the US and writers whose jobs are to accurately depict various people use the word as part of there depiction. Does that make them a racist? Its hard to say but even so, I believe in Death of the Author and as such we should just judge ever piece individually.

Yea..the thing here is as in Literature, I think a general understanding is regardless of ethnicity or lack of if & it's a part of your general vocab your that much closer to walking on all fours..OR 'Hey gimme $25 on pump 7'.

Literature is subjective, I don't know if Clancy, King or Creighton are true lit, but Twain is maybe cause of the period of time since he was published. Back then, and in some places today, It was rule to substitue that for first name, last name, stranger, friend. So as far as Jim goes that was unfortuanate.

I like King, but there are a dozen worse things he propagates other using that.

I guess it's easier to pull out the race card than to actually think and try to make the distinction. *sigh*

"Yo niger, what up, you dig?" said Jack the rabbit to Bernie the Black Bear.

I actually clearly remember that line from a children's book I was reading to my cousin the other day. Remember it because it was really odd.

If you're a white person just saying it to be funny and rile **** up, then no, I don't agree with that. If it's integral to a story, whatever.

OTT I would like to know how come N gets such treatment, but in regards to Jewish folk "K" is never thrown around or illuded to. OH You can say N 51 times a day to whomever you think deserves it:whatever:, but drop a K and see what kind of mushroom cloud looms.

That's a distinction. If a writer writes about a racist character to show the ugliness of it or to show that racism does exist, I don't think that makes the writer a racist.

:( I blame it on the mass production black rappers albums being bought by the white middle class, but alas its now become firmly embedded in the vernacular of middle class white kids everywhere, yay!!! :)

This is where I draw the line.

Stephen King is great, but he's a racist in my eyes.

Anyone who writes this words harbor racists, stereotypical, ethnocentric thoughts.

No one should be allowed to write this word--and passed off as literature.

:lmao:

Well, he did wear that frilly collar....suspicious if you ask me.

He wore the frilly collar because he was gay :o True joke, though! The majority of his sonnets were written about a male lover.

Er...I never saw Jesse Jackson get fired from anything for saying "K***", as Imus did just for saying "Nappy Haired".

"******" By Captain Planet!

As the ****** stands there
He wrestles a bear
It was a white man dare
Oh you ******
You silly ******
He leaves and goes to the ****ter
Oh what a ******
Oh what a ******

Spoons is also black. If he was white, he'd probably get hit in the face.

Look, there is no need to say the N word.

That's all I'm saying.

Tell me: when is it necessary to say the N word?

'wassup my ******' :o

White people freak over the word more than black people it seems. It's just a word, you arent going to die if you say it and it doesnt mean you hate black people. It's the meaning you put behind it...:whatever:
