The N word in Literature

I'm not sure if he's mocking Spoons or not. Well, hypocrites can be confusing, especially to someone who's easily confused like me. One thing I'm sure of is that he has weird logic, that goes beyond this thread.

Who dares!?

In the case of how this thread started, Stephen King is not a racist for having the N word in his book. He is clearly portraying a racist, etc. However, this is how I view the N word for everyday speaking/conversation. Nobody should say the N word. It just sounds ignorant, especially because of what that word used to be used for, which is why when I see other black people say it, I am smacked not only with ignorance, but hypocrisy.

If the N word, and other racial/ethnic slurs are not being said, then we are one step closer to uniting as people beyond race/ethnic background. Since that will only happen in a perfect word, I try my best to refrain from using the N word, or other ethnic slurs. It's wrong.

This thread reminds me of last year when my English class read To Kill A Mockingbird. I was deeply upset by the use of the N-Word. Not because I found it offensive, but because it's just such a hateful word. I just can't understand why and how people can hate each other so much just because of what they look like. I have two black cousins and when I talk to them and they talk about what they had to deal with growing up, it breaks my heart. Anyway, when the time came for the TKAM test, one of the questions was "What Is Atticus Called For Defending Tom Robinson? (You Have To Use The Actual Word To get Credit)." I quietly cried because I never wanted to ever write or say that word ever in my life. But I wrote it, and wrote after the answer "This is the first and last time I will EVER use that word and I want you to know that using it deeply upset me."

However extreme this may have been for you - I would say not writing it, and taking the mark against your grade would have spoken louder.

I can not even begin to understand. Had that been me, I would have wrote it - no problem. However, that is the clear definition of a person who has never dealt with this sort of racism. Notice I said 'this sort.' Racism does cover the entire human race. However, one does not have the same history as the other.

Point - the Jewish community had hate thrown at them for being frugal. A once prominent book/short story titled The Jew of Venice is now The Merchant of Venice. The story portrays a man who feeds on the economy of Venice, while using the skills he learned as a "Jew."

The title change came, not because of the hatred - and the word choice - but because the stigma of being 'money hungry' at no cost needed to be dealt with as a flaw, a characteristic - not a race.

This topic will not end her. The more we show emphasis on the word, the more strength the people that use it for hate will obtain.

Spoons has a good approach - no need to get upset. I understand this is not that simple - one could only hope the asnwer to a challenge is.

It's not easy for most people to just "not get upset". But it takes more than a slur to rile your boy up :p

Haha, very rarely. More like gas prices, muscle spasms, and leaving enough milk in the fridge for 1/3 a protein shake. WTF! :cmad:

Aww, come here, and give me a hug. *sniffle*

Two thumbs up for Warhammer. That was my whole point of this thread.

And I was not mocking Colossus. Heemy brother. Did you just notice? Alot of the black members gravitate toward thick, bulky superheroes with lots of shiny armor. Hmm, could this be a conspiracy?

Spawn is, simply put, nothing and everything.

Black people and white people should never date.

This ***** said no chill'uns for him though.

This is where I draw the line.

Stephen King is great, but he's a racist in my eyes.

Anyone who writes this words harbor racists, stereotypical, ethnocentric thoughts.

No one should be allowed to write this word--and passed off as literature.

Sorry man, but even though I'm one to annoy people on issues of racism, I definitely think your way off track here.

The word is horrible, it has an awful bloody history, yet in literature it is used to display the ignorance and personality of the user.
It isn't like King wrote a book demonizing blacks, and liberally used the n word.

The n word is in the dictionary, you going to be one of these fools that tries to sue them?

All your reaction does is give it more destructive power.

I don't think the word should be tossed around meaninglessly, but it is a big part of American history... Speaking of which, you think Mark Twain was racist?

Bubonic, please read the whole thread before jumping the gun.

King may not be a racist after all. That was just a misguided attempt for me to open up a taboo subject, and help others understand that NOT saying the N word is alot better than saying it.

Again, read Warhammer's and Colossus posts.

I use the "N" word on a regular basis.

The basic definition is precise.
