The N word in Literature

When you're doing a historically accurate piece and that was the commonly used language of the time?

This is where I draw the line.

Stephen King is great, but he's a racist in my eyes.

Anyone who writes this words harbor racists, stereotypical, ethnocentric thoughts.

No one should be allowed to write this word--and passed off as literature.

Damn! After reading the Shining I always thought he was the opposite of what you said!

********!

Then why is it that blacks are allowed to say this word, but asians, mexican, europeans are not allowed?

The moment they do, blacks call them racists. What century are you living in? If you say this word, you are a racist in their eyes. The hypocrisy is unbelievable.

Jackie Chan said ****** in Rush Hour. The results were indeed hilarious, does this make Jackie Chan racist..no :o

Nah, I know, he was just joking.

But it's hypocritical for a black man to call another man racist for saying, nikka!, when that blundering fool says it everyday, no?

So it's not ok to say it but you think that if someone else says it you should be able to?
I'm lost in your reasoning.

People can call each other whatever they want as far as Im concerned. White, Black, Asian, Latino....we're all ******s

Yes.

It's kind of like the f-word.

No need to say it, but since everyone is saying it, what am I holding back for?

Here's my thing with the N word. Until rappers and everyday black people on the street stop calling each other that, how the hell can we get mad when white people say it? Hypocrisy at it's finest. Either none of us say it, or it's free game for everyone. I've had white friends say that to me and I just came back with a white slur. Heck, I've had actual racists call me that before, just gotta shrug it off; it's not like I don't hear it everytime I turn on my mp3 player :whatever:

I have tons of friends who are ready to fight if they even hear a white person say any word that even sounds like "******". How ridiculous. It's 2008, calm the F down :o Of course, even with the friends of mine that say that word around me; it can't be every 3 seconds. You might get away with it every 4th time I see you. Any more than that, and it'll get annoying. Not offensive, but annoying. I hate when black people say it every other word too.

Thank you, my nikka, for being truthful and honest.

Amen, brother.

I don't have a very popular stance on the word and most black people would think I'm crazy. But I'm not gonna get all stressed out and raise my blood pressure(which is already high just by being black in the first damn place) just because a bunch of white people said the N word. There's too much else wrong with the world to get hung up on something to trivial.

Why would you want to protray a racist for?

Because you condone it; you harbor the same feeling.

Well then going by that logic, if you are a fan of any actor or writer that has EVER written about or portrayed a racist or even said the N word in a movie, TV series, etc, then by association you are a racist as well because you are a fan of that actor who, again by your logic, condones racism, so that must mean you condone it as well. Starting to see your point fall apart here?

I found his reply to Spoons... confusing.

I think hypocritical is the word I thought of. I could see if it was a joke by anyone else (Although was it a joke? With this guy I'm not sure haha), but it goes against what he's been trying to say this entire thread

I'm not sure if he's mocking Spoons or not. Well, hypocrites can be confusing, especially to someone who's easily confused like me. One thing I'm sure of is that he has weird logic, that goes beyond this thread.

Guess this means we are burning books.

Oh, no - not just novels. We are going to burn all the history books, comics, sci-fi, etc.

Because we aren't just stopping with the "N" word; we are gonna ban all 'bad words.'

****!

Burn the hype.

^That post reminds me of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. *shivers*

This thread reminds me of last year when my English class read To Kill A Mockingbird. I was deeply upset by the use of the N-Word. Not because I found it offensive, but because it's just such a hateful word. I just can't understand why and how people can hate each other so much just because of what they look like. I have two black cousins and when I talk to them and they talk about what they had to deal with growing up, it breaks my heart. Anyway, when the time came for the TKAM test, one of the questions was "What Is Atticus Called For Defending Tom Robinson? (You Have To Use The Actual Word To get Credit)." I quietly cried because I never wanted to ever write or say that word ever in my life. But I wrote it, and wrote after the answer "This is the first and last time I will EVER use that word and I want you to know that using it deeply upset me."
