Some have been saying that the New Mutants would be set in the "present" with McAvoy's Xavier being their leader/professor.

So let's look at that a moment...

Charles was what, maybe mid-20's or early 30's back in First Class. Which should have made him say almost 50 in the 1983 set Apocalypse movie. So now if you time jump to the present for this movie he would be what, 85 years old or so?

Yes, I know, Kinberg and Singer don't care about the timeline, so I wouldn't put it past them to just do this, but it doesn't make much sense to have it in the present with Xavier in charge.

Man, I wish we didn't have all of this decade jumping timeline crap because this could be so good. I wrote about the need for New Mutants (and I'm glad they listened) and I listed all of the amazing characters. Maybe I'll find that article, bump it, and link it here, but I just don't know how to do it well if they set it in 2018 or so...

No, you are wrong. For now, New Mutant is set in 80' with Mcavoy and Shipp. You have wrong infos.
But it is not official so anything can happen.

Was just stating what others in this thread have speculated. 80's is kind of odd too, but probably better than the present (as far as meshing with the other X-Men films).

Think there should be at least some gap between New Mutants and the current formation of the X-Men. What I mean is it shouldn't be Mystique stating "you're X-Men now" and the New Mutants being formed right away...

Its impossible to make a movie in present day starring young cast (Shipp, McAvoy ..)

Shipp isn't in the movie. That was just a bs rumor that Shipp already debunked.

Impossible? This is Fox. They most definitely can, even if logically it doesnt make sense

Its definitely not impossible but geez, it totally will screw up the continuity especially we are still gonna see Patrick Stewart in at least 1 more film as Professor X.

It's supposed to screw with the continuity. It's a matter of if that becomes ANX-M wherein the older characters interact with their younger selves OR the younger selves come to the present and realize their absence changed things.

In any case, the only time travel that's been introduced is returning back to a memory which Wolverine had both the healing factor and slowed down aging to withstand.

I said nothing is official so anything can happen BUT Drew McWeeny is a serious journalist and i think he is right. If Fox don't change their plan, Shipp is in New Mutant and she debunked because it isn't official.

If Fox didn't care about continuity, Cyclop, Jean, Storm would have been in X-Men First Class or McAvoy would have been in Deadpool lol.

It's still a question mark where it fits in timeline of X-Men films.I am inclinded to think it is set in past after apocalypse and the Xavier in the film will be Mcavoy.especilly since i expect final jackman wolverine solo film to be last of any of cast of original trilogy in a X-Men related film.

too late for that. Pretty much anything is fair game based on the low standards this studio has for the franchise

Right now, IMO, the underperformance of Apocalypse is gonna be a factor to this film's setting. Apocalypse is barely beating X1's box-office gross in North America and that is really bad. And IMO, James McAvoy being the face of New Mutants isn't good - box-office wise while Alexandra Shipp is off to a bad start as Storm. Unless they hire some really notable actors for the other roles, I don't see why setting this is the past in a good idea especially when they just introduced younger versions of Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Phoenix and Storm.

Kinberg said Boone's script is "very loyal to the comics".

Boone's put up photos of his vast comic collection and his supposed roster is very classic New Mutants (even though some people want to see Karma, Magma and Doug included), so he definitely seems to have that kind of fanboy credibility (even saying on Twitter how much he liked Sienkiewicz's run on the comic and RT all of those special New Mutants releases). Let's just hope he has the skills to properly convey that sort of passion on screen.

But he won't be the face of new mutants, new mutants will be about the new mutants, exact same if it was in present day its about them.

interesting. But I wouldn't know what storyline they could really adapt from Claremont's first New Mutants run? Overall I really wish they will find a way to adapt Bill Sienkiewicz's art and specific tone cinematographically. His art is just so outstanding and very particular. If done right this could be something very beautiful and dark. Psychologically I found the run very dark.

who could be the enemy?

-Nova Roma and Selene? (I'm a big Selene fan but I find this storyline extremely cheesy)
-the Demon Bear Saga? (maybe the best New Mutants storyline overall but is the world really ready for a demon bear as an enemy?)
-Limbo and Illyana? (Josh Boone seems to be very interested in the horror genre judging from his instagram. so maybe?)
-Legion? (most of the storyline takes place in David Haller's mind. Could be very cool on screen)
-Magus and the Technarchy?

if I remember it right the first issues even deal with Xavier infected by a Brood queen. creepy fact: the New Mutants have been only assembled by Xavier because the Brood queen were looking for genetically outstanding mutant bodies to infect. But I doubt they go this route. If they will not be faithful to this source material origin I will be so angry! lol (I'm kidding)

I am really excited for this movie and I hope they will really make it. I'm still a little unsure if it will really happen...When they start filming I believe it!

I don't want to be pessimistic but since its coming from Kinberg, I'm not gonna buy it. Of course he will say good things about the movies that he's producing. This is the person that said that Bryan Singer thinks Psylocke is a neat character and look what we got in X-Men: Apocalypse.

Kinberg saying something is loyal to the comics sounds skeptical but seeing as Boone seems to generally be a big fan of the comics I think the statement has some truth.

I doubt the movie will be a direct adaptation of anyone New Mutants storyline but it will probably draw influences from certain things in the comics.

Given that the film will have a supernatural/horror tone I think Selene or Belasco will be the villain. Either or both those villains could work as antagonists.

I like Demon bear but I don't think it will be the main villain if it is in the movie.

Belasco could be the one to turn Danielle Moonstar's parents into Demon bear to torment her in the movie.

Finding a way to adapt Bill Sienkiewicz's art and specific tone into the cinematography would be great.

Which is why I'm interested to see how Boone does horror with Revival, he seems to be big on comics and the horror genre judging off his social media. If he can nail that after nail the YA tone with TFIOS, this film could be in good hands.

Don't think Legion will be involved in this film at all (though if they wanted to it probably wouldn't hard, he can warp reality after all). This film could build up to doing the Phalanx Covenant depending on how they use Warlock.

At this point, being loyal to the comics is to be expected. I wouldn't necessarily distrust Kinberg when he says that, whether they're adapted well is a different story though.

I don't think they will feature Legion while there is a separate possibly ongoing version of him on TV.

if rumors are true and Maisie williams is up for wolfsbane it would be nice time to sign her.she was just nominated for emmy for season 6 of Game of thrones.

Its not going to be the first time that this series had an actor who was nominated for an Emmy.
