The New Xbox Live Experience

I am too. I stupidly downloaded the Castle Crashers premium theme, and it's very meh. Lesson learned.

Yeah, I doubt I'll buy any themes. I'll probably switch to the second theme Microsoft gives you. Spectral or something like that. It was nice and orangey. I like orange.

Damn Microsoft.

So how many of you are using the "Night" premium theme that came with the update?

That's the one I'm using, looks pretty cool. Tried a Gears of War theme I had, but it looked kinda funky, like it wasn't originally designed to be a theme and stretched to fit the screen.

360 Hard Drive Install Gimps Halo 3
Bungie says copying the game to your console will decrease performance.

November 20, 2008 - For many Xbox 360 gamers, the most exciting thing about the dashboard overhaul that went through yesterday was not avatars or Netflix but rather the ability to install retail games to the console hard drive. In theory, this new feature should improve game performance by limiting the extent to which the software must query the system's DVD drive, thus shrinking load times and speeding things up overall. Or, then again, maybe not.

Several gamers have noticed that Halo 3 actually performs worse when installed to the Xbox 360 hard drive than it did when operated solely from the optical drive (even when installed, you'll still need to have the disk in the drive). So why is that? Turns out it's a bit complicated, so Bungie developer Mat Noguchi took some time to explain the problem on Bungie.net.

Basically, Halo 3 uses a special partition of the Xbox 360 hard drive as scratch memory to quickly load maps. Because it's pulling data from one device (the DVD drive) and copying it to another (the HDD) the software can do both at once. But when the game is installed solely to the hard drive, it can't easily perform both operations simultaneously and thus the process is slowed down significantly. If you want to geek out about things like read/write heads and data copy ratios, then head over to the Bungie.net post and read more.

But the bottom line is that, for games that were developed and released before Microsoft released specs on the new hard drive install feature, performance may actually decrease with full game installation rather than increase. Bungie is now recommending that you not install Halo 3 to the hard drive if you want the game to perform optimally. Will other developers come forward and do the same?

Every game is developed differently, and it could be that some titles will see a performance increase when installed to the hard drive, but for now that will have to be judged on a case-by-case basis.

I must say it kind of sucks that you need a gold membership to get netflix. I mean you are already paying for netflix.

I've been watching 30 Rock nonstop. It's a very good show. Really.

The Netflix thing is too cool.

I'm hoping more outfits get added.

Here's hoping for a Batman outfit.

Well the TDK dvd release is coming up....

How cool would it be, if you could dress your av in Joker Clothes and Make-up!

I'm sure you'll be able to one day. The best thing Microsoft could do for the avatars, rather than release tons of new, unique clothing items every week, is simply allow users to edit the color of their clothing. Right now, my avatar is stuck in all sorts of colorful junk when my wardrobe consists almost entirely of blue, black, and gray.

I agree with the clothes colors changing. but really, there's not even hooded sweaters which is all I wear. can anyone install games to their hard drive? I'm trying to do so for gears 2 and skate but I can't seem to find it. and I'm glad I deleted all the games I've never gotten achievements for, I just wish you could delete games with achievements (lost: via domus for me).

Yeah...I think that's what's the coolest about the avatar.

The potential for the things they can do.

People over at the Penny Arcade forums said that if you go into System>memory>hard drive, then press Y for divice options, then have the system do maintanance on the hard drive to clear out all the junk left over, once you reboot the system, it fixes the freezing glitch.

I'll be trying this out tonight, we'll see how it works.

Im bummed they dont have a black suit with red tie, but this suit is pretty damn close to the suit 47 wore to his funeral at the end of Blood Money.

I think the avatars are pretty neat, i mean im not going crazy over em, but i had fun making an avatar based on 47. I will say this tho, if MS's goal was to one up the Miis, they have acomplished that feat. Avatars are better than the Miis in every way.
