Exactly.
People are trying to pretend that Sony/Marvel would be stupid enough to eliminate someone based on their age instead of their age look.
It seems that is the big debate here, are Sony/Marvel looking at age only? Numbers on a page? Or are they looking at age look, talent, and acting personality?
I would claim the latter, and I know others would disagree.
Everything that has been said would show that they are not just going to eliminate someone because of age. Otherwise Feige would have made it clear that it would be a younger actor than the status quo. It means tehy are being open to choose someone who isn't the exact age of the character they will be portraying.
It really depends on the criteria that Sony and Feige are looking for in terms of the casting call. Alot of times filmmakers and tv shows will look at the age of the actor regardless of how well they pull of an audition. If they feel an actor is too old for the age range they're looking at , they'll reject them. No, its not fair, but that happens quite a bit. Its subjective not objective. It depends on what they want.
Now for child and teen actors ,they usually cast an actor who's not the exact age of the character, so that's not really a revelation. If the character is 14, they'll cast a 16, 17, or 18 year old sometimes. Though in alot of cases they will cast a 10 year old to play a 10 year old, or a 14 year old to play a 14 year old. Its not uniform. It depends on the project and whether its a one shot film or an ongoing series . In this case , I do think they are looking at age, look, and talent combined.
So while they may decide to go with an actor who's a bit older due to talent ala Nat Wolfe who's 20, if the actor is like 25 or 26 as Garfield was, I doubt he's gonna get picked even if he knocks it out of the park as a 15 year old. It really depends on the subjective standards are for this particular casting call.
