I agree that Dylan is the best candidate for the role traits wise, but I understand why Marvel AND Sony want longevity, someone who can play the character for 15 years.

A younger actor could literally do multiple trilogies

Fixed it. :o

Do we seriously have to go through this AGAIN? Marvel Studios does not control the Spider-Man license. Continuing to pretend otherwise will not change that one indisputable fact.

They are working with Sony to integrate the Spider-Man license into the MCU, but that does not make the license theirs to control.

I was kidding...

The Variety article is from the 10th of February. Redditleaker posted the thread the 1st of March. Your theory is wrong.

I wouldn't be so quick to shot down my theory. redditleaker23456 has been doing this for five months now:

http://www.reddit.com/user/redditleaker23456

He's going back and forth from Dylan O'Brien to Logan Lerman AND Andrew Garfield since December. The "Dylan O'Brien is Spider-Man" reddit was the one that "stuck", but he has been doing this for months now. You don't need to trust me, just check his posts history on the link I've posted above.

His "rumors" snowballed into some smaller superhero and small time websites reporting him as some kind of source. From that, Variety - and no other trade - said that Dylan O'Brien and Logan Lerman were names mentioned for Spider-Man. That's all that Variety said, that those names were mentioned, not even by who, meaning they were talking about speculation, my point is that speculation started by redditleaker23456 himself. Which is way more likely than Variety hearing that O'Brien or Lerman were mentioned to get the role of a 15 year old Spider-Man, if you ask me. Feel free to keep disregarding what I'm saying though.

Well yeah I'm going to keep disregarding you on that because your little theory is stupid. Do you really think Variety will post an article based on a user on Reddit but not say a single word about the shortlist, that is considered serious because it come from the Wrap? Come on, that's ridiculous.

Guys, be as mean to Liam James as you wish, but you cannot deny the fact that he looks both dorky and really young. That mean he can pass for a mid-teen and a geek at the same time. .
James is my third choice from the list, behind Holland and Buttermilk

People cannot seriously be buying into the idea of this guy as a 15/16 year old.
They will accept everything as long as it's 0'Brien. The character can even be 12 and they will still root for the guy, claiming they can make him appear kid-like with special effects and make-up.
And ouch, that was a really bad pick of him.

Same here. Wolff isn't an option to me. I know he's hot right now, I know that he looks like one of the persons that I'll always love, I know that people think he's talented, but he just too old next to the other 4 options, which actually look like 15 year olds.

I don't think it's stupid. It was not based on reddit, it originated from there, but back in February that was seen as a rumor, one created and feed originally by redditleaker23456 himself. Variety never said that those actors were contenders, but that their names were mentioned, aka speculation. But feel free to think otherwise. I think that's the very reason any other trade followed Variety on that particular point, it was just an offhand comment on the speculations that were going regarding Spider-Man at that period of time. Created by redditleaker23456. That's his greatest achievement, I believe.

EDIT: You people need to remind that back in February, the access to the Sony Leaks wasn't public. It's feasible to believe that Variety could be lead on to believe that those rumors were legit because a lot of people were using the leaks as an umbrella to claim all kinds of speculations and rumors involving Sony. I feel like Variety was just commenting on the rumor that was running around at the month, meaning O'Brien and Lerman been "mentioned".

Okay let's say you're right. Then why Variety is saying nothing about the shortlist? This list seems pretty official to most people so why would they make an article based on rumors/speculations and not now with this list of 5 actors?

Agree. Many wont believe the guy on Reddit but for these same people to then think they can influence publications like Variety is a but rich and too much into conspiracy theory territory.
Before Reddit many fans felt that Dylan or Logan would be the best candidates for the role. It isnt rocket science as for many they are simply the perfect actors to play Peter Parker.

Exactly. and I find it odd that Marvel/Sony would consider him for a 15 year-old kid, seeing as the other guys look 5 years younger than their actual age.

Trades usually don't quote other short lists because they are competitors. I just think you people overestimated the simple mention of two actors as been 'mentioned' for a part and assumed that meant they were contenders, when in fact they never were even considered... except for redditleaker23456, the one that started the rumor back in December.

Well, some of us thought that these same dudes looked too young. I don't think Marvel is going with him though, I feel like Nat Wolff is Spider-Man's John Krasinski.

Hopefully you're right, because imo, he looks like a 22 year-old.

I think it's a lot about perception. Let's take a look at both Nat Wolff and Dylan O'Brien most prominent roles:

Nat Wolff: The Fault Is On The Stars and Paper Towns. Both films he plays a kid in the verge of graduation day. In Paper Towns, he plays a kid at his graduation day.

Dylan O'Brien: Was hired for the role of High Schooler Stiles back in 2011. He was 19 back then, which would be around the right age Marvel should be looking for a 15 year old right now.

That's the whole point if you ask me. These actors already play roles where they are older, so going back to play younger just feels completely off. That and the fact that looking wise, both look their age or older.

There are so many better actors that you could choose from in a 22-24 year old age range. But hey, trust Marvel, they've never made mistakes before...

coughs...

Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Iron Man 2, Thor, Cap 1.

Neither of these films are mistakes. Captain America and Iron Man 3 are among their greatest films, Thor is great and Dark World and Iron Man 2 are greatly underrated. So yeah, those hardly qualify as mistakes.

Are you calling The First Avenger a mistake???

Get out of here! :cmad:

How can anyone call Thor and Captain America: First Avenger mistakes? I think they're really good and I think that's the general concensus of those films.
