"The night is dark and full of terrors" - Melissandre aka The Red Woman

So um Stannis totally got Catfished via magic...

I know it's a classic trope but [blackout]I still didn't predict that Melisandre was old as hell[/blackout]. Man, hindsight is 20/20 because I should have seen it coming since season 2.

After todays reveal, I think this is really interesting, and gives a different perspective on everything so far, concerning her character.

from this ^ article:

"The hugely anticipated return of the HBO drama concluded with a jaw-dropping revelation when Melisandre (Carice van Houten) removed her mysterious necklace. In the final moments of the hour, the sorceress disrobed and set aside the gold- and red-jeweled necklace she’s (almost) always worn on Thrones until this point. Fans were then stunned to see the real Melisandre for the first time – very old, and possibly ancient."
I don't think it's the necklace that sustains the illusion or transformation.

Someone suggested it was her potions that helped.

I think that may be right. After watching it again, I believe it's likely both. The gem in the necklace turns red for a split second as she removes it. She then places it on a table with potion flasks in the foreground.

is this wording a hint to things we possibly didn't pay attention to in the past?

Still can't get over as to how creepy that whole scene was. Haunting. :(

The tub scene showed a shelf full of potions and she added one to her bath. She stated that some of those were for illusions of sorts. In the latest scene at Castle Black, she placed her necklace on a table with potions in the foreground.

I've been rewatching most of her scenes lately and haven't come across anything else that might cause the glamour.

Recently rewatched older seasons before getting to this episode.

I found it interesting that she seems unable to revive people (like Thoras of Mhyr can) but she has been able to keep herself alive for so long.

I'm thinking if she does revive Jon Snow, she's going to end up taking his place. I don't think she's capable of reviving anyone without strings attached.

Melisandre has completely lost all of her confidence and faith, and isn't getting it back anytime soon... especially not before Thorne's deadline of "nightfall" comes and goes.

People just need to accept that she's not going to be doing what they want her to do (resurrect Jon) and move on.

The showrunners went out of their way to have her meet Thoros and Beric. Just saying.

She's there and she can do it, and it doesn't require faith either. Thoros had lost his but said the words anyway the first time he resurrected Beric -then his faith was restored afterward. This may be how she restores her own.
That tale was recounted to the Red Woman after she inquired about Beric's resurrection at about 3:20 in this clip:

Heh.

That crow must taste really good.

Hey DigificWriter tell us again (so authoritatively) how Mel isn't bringing Jon back and how we need to move on.

Careful... he'll come up with some confirmed lie that it wasn't Melisandre, it was actually Richard Brake wearing a red wig.

How does the new priestess compare to Melisandre? Wonder if they'll ever share a scene.
