The Dark Knight The Non-Spoiler Critic Review Thread

Some choice quotes from the TIME review:

"There's a beautiful high-angle shot, early in The Dark Knight, that looks down on Bruce Wayne (Christian Bale) in full Batman regalia as he perches atop a Gotham skyscraper, surveying the city he lives to protect, then leaping off and spreading his majestic bat wings to swoop down into the night. Bruce's trajectory is also the film's. It traces a descent into moral anarchy, and each of its major characters will hit bottom. Some will never recover, broken by the touch of evil or by finding it, like a fatal infection, in themselves."

...

"But Nolan has a more subversive agenda. He wants viewers to stick their hands down the rat hole of evil and see if they get bitten. With little humor to break the tension, The Dark Knight is beyond dark. It's as black — and teeming and toxic — as the mind of the Joker. Batman Begins, the 2005 film that launched Nolan's series, was a mere five-finger exercise. This is the full symphony."

...

"This Joker is simply one of the most twisted and mesmerizing creeps in movie history."

...

Actually, they're just diversions from the epochal face-off of Bruce and the Joker. For a good part of the film, when the two embrace in a free fall of souls — one doomed, the other imperiled — you may think you're in the grip of a mordant masterpiece. That feeling will pass, as the film spends too many of its final moments setting up the series' third installment. The chill will linger, though. The Dark Knight is bound to haunt you long after you've told yourself, Aah, it's only a comic-book movie.

AH I hate that last line. In my opinion Batman, Batman Returns, Superman The Movie and Spider-Man 2 stand up against any movie.

Anyway it's interesting that this is a review that spots a flaw, i think it's the first.

No, other ones have spotted flaws too. The Movie Blog also had issues with the end.

Heh, a few of the reviews have already mentioned how long and bloated it is. But no negative reviews yet - everyone's liked it so far.

It's just a testament to how the different reviewers have reacted to the work. :yay:

okay , that's it . i am NOT reading any more reviews if they continue to give out spoilers so randomly .

i REALLY didn't want to know ANYTHING about all the pencil crap . i REALLY wanted that to be a surprise !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks alot time !!!!!!! :cmad:

I know how you feel. I read the latest Entertainment magizine today at Boarders, to find that pencil spoiler...oh how furious I was at the moment. :cmad:

Times Review was good from what I read. I skimmed it trying to avoid spoilers, and decided I'd be safe reading the last two summarizing paragraphs. I was wrong. Why the hell would the guy put such a spoilerific plot point in the second last paragraph. From that sentence, I can deduce way more than I wanted to know about the finale. If you read it, you know what I'm talking about. I just pray that my deductions are wrong.

Yep, me too. Also hoping I'm wrong here.

You misread that last line, he's specifically saying that anyone who tries to dismiss it as just a comic book movie will still end up with it lingering inside their head.

The Dark Knight is thrilling, troubling, tough, and ultimately great. But not great in the way you'll want it to be. It works because it's unpredictable, and takes chances you would never imagine to see in a big budget summer blockbuster. The Dark Knight subverts everything people accept about comic book movies and action films in general. It's not easy to watch, nor can you walk away without a strong opinion. And that's why it works. Kudos to Nolan and company for not playing things safe.

Oh, I should mentione that dvdtalk review may have some very specific plot points in the second paragraph. The others look okay.

Yep, me too. Also hoping I'm wrong here.

Yeah, the bit about the
once sympathetic character holding a gun to a child's head
really caught me off guard and made me wish I never read it. I deduce that the
sympathetic character is Dent (now Two-Face, and the child is Gordon's son
, and I really hope I didn't ruin it for myself...or you for that matter. LOL I hope I didn't just use a different quote than you were thinking of and possibly ruined something for you. :woot:

Oh yeah, Time loved the movie. As did that DVDtalk review. So far, so good!

He loved BB, so I think we have a great chance of him liking TDK.
I'm looking forward to Ebert's review. I have to admit, after his 4-star BB review, anything less will be kinda disappointing at this point.

Everyone's been raving about how much better TDK is than BB, maybe it would be safe to say anthing on par with 4 stars (let alone less) would be bad :oldrazz:

ENI reviews TDK:

I haven't read it because there might be spoilers:

I truly believe this may be the best movie of the summer. When you hear people toss around the Oscar word for Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker, they are not exaggerating. This movie, though it has a very dark tone, delivers on multiple fronts. It tells a story that is very well thought-out and touches on many of the real-life issues we deal with in the world today. The action will leave you on the edge of your seat throughout the movie, and it just wouldn’t be a Batman movie without all those wonderful toys. Batman even gets to move his head thanks to a new updated suit in this one, a first in Batman movie history.

And let’s not forget Aaron Eckhart’s performance as Harvey Dent. With the buzz around Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker, I’m afraid Eckhart’s role has gone largely unsung. In fact, his part is really the one that makes this movie a Grand Slam. We see his character start out as a beacon of hope for Gotham City and watch him travel down the road of destruction.

The one downside of this movie is that the villains truly steal the show in this one, and Batman almost seems an afterthought at times. Not that it makes this a bad movie in any way, but if you were coming to see it just for Batman you might find yourself a little letdown (not a lot, mind you, but just a little).

For those who think about the future, another downside may be that Director Chris Nolan has set the bar so high with the villains on this one that it is hard to imagine how he would be able to top them if he were to make a third Batman movie, which seems like a no-brainer to me.

The time review was pretty decent, not as good as I thought itd be but pretty decent. I have not lucked out in not trying to read any spoilers Ive read so many by accident its not even funny.
