The Dark Knight The Non-Spoiler Critic Review Thread

I read nearly every single one of those reviews and now I'm just angry that it's still 16 days away! Grrr! :cmad: Oh well, at least I bought my tickets today. They're hanging up on my bulletin board in all their glory.:woot:
 
i can't read them. not until Ebert gives it ****.
 
I saw Jett on BOF saying that he doesn't want to call TDK a comic book film because he thinks that belittles it. I hate that, it should be called a comic book film to show everyone how good they have the potential to be.
 
Jett is even more full of himself after interviewing Nolan and his wife recently!
 
I wouldn't say calling a film a "comic book film" belittles it...but one might say a film transcends the category of "comic book film".

By the way, I noticed that last review had very little to do with singling out the Joker.

Yeah, that impresses me. TDK, according to his review, is a masterpiece in storytelling. Others have said it is Nolan's best movie to date...it seems Ledger's Joker is a part of this magnificent work of art. It makes me even more excited to see that the movie is receiving praise for a lot more than just Heath's performance.
 
I hate when ever any comic book movie is supposed to break out from the genre. It's usually something that is said by someone too dumb to notice the classic story telling elements that are present in the film; or to artifically raise a superhero film they love above the rest. Ignoring the Nolan Batman franchise look at other movies in the genre.

Batman Returns was a German Expression film that looked at the character of Batman in a new way by creating three villians that represent the three sides of Bruce Waynes psyce.

Spider-Man 2 is a modern retelling of It's a Wonderful Life. Peter Parker and George Bailey go on the same character journey. They live in a city that truley needs them, but neither can see it. Their lives are wrecked, in theri opinion, by their burden of responiblity and they both decide to give up. They then get to live in a world without them before making their return. Even at the end of Spider-Man Peter Parker decides that he and Mary Jane can't be together as long as he is Spider-Man; he has to decide between duty and love. Just like in Casablanca. Yet Spidey 1 is dismissed as being "just a comic book movie."

Critics and the general public see a guy in tights and dismiss the film and pop corn fodder, yet the best super hero movies have always been just as good as any movie in any genre.

Except for Batman begins that sucked. :Troll:
 
This might be the one movie I have anticipated for months on end that will actually succeed in terms of quality film making.

The other big movies I've been pumped up for in recent years:
Matrix Sequels
Star Wars Prequels
Terminator 3
Superman Returns

Have all been either ok to downright terrible in terms of quality. This looks like the one hugely anticipated movie in recent memory that might actually be worth the anticipation. That's amazing considering how simple and dumbed down Hollywood usually makes these movies. Can you imagine if they just made the perfect Batman movie? And to boot, a great movie that carries through the generations? One can only hope.

Oh man this wait is killing me. They look like they gave Nolan the freedom to make the movie he wanted to make. Movie fans like me have only dreamed of something like this being imagined on screen.

The only negative I see coming from this film is, every other comic book movie and action flick will probably never reach this scale for years to come. You don't reach this level of cinematic excellence very often. By the look of the reviews, it looks like Nolan may have done it.
 
And Spiderman 3 was a retelling of Guys n' Dolls.

You'll only have to wait about...3 years. That is, until the next batman comes out.

yea terminator 3 was pretty awful. i like the first 2 and my dad is actually in the 2nd one as an extra. true story. he took me to see it in the theater like 4 times when i was 6 years old. but man i thought the 3rd one was a disgrace to what james cameron envisioned.
 
It isn't a comic book movie, and I don't think you should call those comic book movies. Why do you think films like Fantastic Four and Daredevil suck? Because the makers just see them as 'comic flix', and don't think they could succeed outside of the 'genre' (personally I don't see it as genre). Filmmakers like Chris Nolan (and others) showed that it's possible to take comic book characters and adapt them into successful motion pictures.
 
I think the point is that films such as "No Country for Old Men" weren't billed as "book movies" because they were adapted from novels.

I agree. It's amusing that we get some of our best, most interesting characters and stories from "comic book movies" these days. Which in a lot of ways, makes them more than what they appear to be. I think the first two spiderman movies were good (for what they were) and a lot of people...both adults and teenagers related to peter parker's human qualities more than the big stunts and action sequences.

I think with the Dark Knight and Batman in general, we can all relate to the dark side of these characters. We get to play out our most wild crazy thoughts on life and society through the Joker. And we get to fight crime and be the hero through Batman. I'm just glad Nolan seems to have made the best one of them all.

I also think Batman stories have the most ability to be true epics because of their dark and realistic nature. And based on the early reviews, it looks like Nolan really discovered how to make his crime epic come alive while keeping the action scenes big and thrilling. When you think for a moment that people are praising this movie as epic story telling with a guy that dresses up like a Bat, and a guy that dresses up like a clown is really amazing to me. This film has also been praised as the best, most thought-provoking film so far on the post 9/11 world and how we see ourselves now. That is quite high praise for just a "comic book movie". This movie might transcend the genres like reviewers have said. I can't wait to find out what I think.

As well, I believe that statements like that create unreasonable expectations for great films, leaving audiences predisposed to disappointment. What I will say is that The Dark Knight is easily the most well-crafted superhero movie that I have ever seen, one that transcends genre, on a scale that is as epic as they come and with performances that will shake you to your core.

For as much as The Dark Knight is not a perfect film, it is certainly pretty damn close.

Wow, and here I was a few weeks back thinking of how big this movie was gonna be, and reviewers are making me think it is even bigger than I could have imagined. I can't wait.
