So there are times when I just feel like reading something older, maybe for the first time, but sadly, those comics's times have come and gone and there's no one around to discuss them anymore.

So I figured I'd start a thread for people like me who decided to read something that Not New. And hey, sometimes it's fun to discuss comics from yester year.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the weekend I picked up the last issue of the 90's crossover "Rise of the Midnight Sons." I started skimming the first issue today and ended up reading it, and the reading the rest of it.

Issues included:

Ghost Rider 28
Spirits of Vengeance 1
Morbius 1
Spirits of Vengeance 2
Darkhold 1
Spirits of Vengeance 3
Nightstalkers 1
Ghost Rider 31

Now, I know that Ghost Rider 29-30 also tie-in here, but I don't have them. I've read 29 before, though out of context, so I got the jist of what it was about. And really, the story could be read without these issues, same with S.o.V. 2-3, but I had them so I read them in order.

Now, I read and really enjoyed Ghost Rider up until issue 27 with the X-Men/Brood crossover, but that's where I stopped. So this is my first time reading this story. I've always known that I liked Ghost Rider and Blaze, and I vaguely remember reading Morbius's first few issues when they were new, though I didn't remember any of it, but I really had no interest in the Nightstalkers or Darkhold. I found while reading all of this in context that I really enjoyed every single issue of this event, much more than most of the stuff that comes out today.

The idea is that just prior to this event, Danny Ketch was nearly killed by a demonic person called Blackout. Ghost Rider took over and Danny's dying consciousness remains inside of him. They are searching out a way to save him, and while they are doing that, a Demon Mother returns from an ages long exile, named Lilith (recenty of Captain Britain & MI:13). She is gathering her lost demon children, who have blended in with the humans, but has a vision of 9 people who can defeat her. And so she attempts to destroy at least 1 to break that chain and to ensure her survivor while she regains her strength.

Problem is, she somehow comes into contact with the dying soul of Danny Ketch and through him Ghost Rider and Blaze learn of her return and plans. So the crossover consists of Ghost Rider and Blaze on one side and Lilith and her children (the Lilan) hunting the rest of these people down to try to kill/save them. And of course, Ghost Rider and Blaze's taking on different members of Lilith's children all the while. We also see that Doctor Strange is in the background pulling strings for Ghost Rider and Blaze. It turns out that he is unable in interfere directly because the level of magical powers between he and Lilith would cause more damage than not, so it's safer to work through others.

From there the differant people from the new books are brought into the story as we are introduced to the 9... who consist of: Ghost Rider & Johnny Blaze (the Spirits of Vengeance), Blade, Hannibal King, & Frank Drake (The Nightstalkers), Victoria Mantesi, Louise Hastings, & Sam Buchannon (from Darkhold), and Morbius the Living Vampire.

This was a great start to the new titles and I find myself real curious about them and I'm eager to try and find more of their stuff as soon as I can. The story brings them together in the end for a fairly explosive final to the story that is conclusive, yet, leaves you eager for more. I can't wait to read more from this line of books.

Definately a good way to start the day :)

Always meant to read more Spirits of Vengeance/'90s supernatural comics.

Personally, I've been reading Journey into Mystery/Thor from the very beginning. I figure if I'm gonna claim to be as huge a Thor fan as I do, I ought to have read everything Thor's been in for myself at least once. I started last week and have gotten up to Thor #153 (starting at Journey into Mystery #83 and including the first Thor annual). The first few JiMs are some boring-ass comics, steeped in Silver Age hokiness with plenty of power inconsistency and hackneyed plots. Yes, they gave us the likes of Mr. Hyde, Zarrko, and other villains who would go on to be Marvel mainstays, but those first stories they were in are generally pretty bad.

But then you get to around JiM #115 or 120 and the stories start getting better. Lee seems to figure out what works with Thor, ditching the constant crutch of the 60-second time limit, a lot of the human problems of Don Blake (with the notable exception of Thor/Blake's forbidden love for Jane Foster, which sticks around and is used pretty well), and the weak-ass, Earth-based, done-in-one plots with 'supervillains' who are barely above common criminals. He focuses more on Asgard, cementing some Asgardians' characterization (namely Balder, who went from initially being an old man who was Sif's brother to a young, beloved, faithful nobleman in Odin's service and best friend to Thor) and introducing more foes with Asgardian and cosmic ties, like the Absorbing Man (who kicks a hell of a lot of ass his first few times out) and Ego. Lee also starts telling more serialized stories, with plot points appearing in one issue and then being put on the back burner until they're revisited 2 or 3 issues later, setting up cliffhangers that hold your interest much more than the one-issue tales of earlier JiM issues.

Of course, this comes with the really, really overblown dialogue style that many people know and hate Thor for (it's really inconsistent under Lee's pen, too), and the power inconsistency never goes away (I've counted at least 3 or 4 people who've lifted Mjolnir so far without any explanation, including the Absorbing Man and Ulik ). But those are relatively minor compared to the pros. There are some genuinely fun and engaging stories here, and somewhere between Thor befriending and fighting on behalf of Hercules in Olympus and Jane getting traded out for Sif, I felt like a kid discovering Thor for the first time again. Awesome stuff overall, and it's no wonder Thor managed to survive as one of Marvel's most major characters for so long. :awesome:

With the exception of some of his current stuff I could just never get into Thor. I've tried a few times and just couldn't get into it.

The closest was when Thunderstrike just got Thor's power, but that didn't last long for me.

I've always liked Both since Monsters were what got me into comics starting with Werewolf by Night in Spotlight and when I saw the add for Ghost Rider I flipped out! lol
I've always liked swords and I knew some about Thor, but more about Knights when Spotlight was in it's early years.

I enjoyed alot of volume 2 What If comics. Some of my personal favs are:

-What if the marvel heroes lost atlantis attacks
-what if prof x became the juggernaut
-what if reed and susan's daughter had lived
-what if spidey had kept his cosmic powers

:)

I've been skimming thru alot of my Roger Stern Avengers issues, all of which I scooped up in the dollar bin.

Under Siege and it's follow up Assault on Olympus still hold up to this day.

-Gorgeous John Buscema art
-the Black Knight stepping up to Zeus after the likes of Namor and She Hulk are defeated
-Cap leading the Avengers against the Greek Pantheon
-Masters of Evil invasion of the mansion

Good stuff.

Hmm, I read Under Siege but I never read Assault on Olympus. I'll have to check that out.

I'm looking forward to when John Buscema starts penciling Thor. It's coming up in a couple dozen issues. I'm enjoying Kirby's art but John Buscema's always been one of my favorite artists.

That's surprising considering you're really big on the mythology stuff dude.

Great story. It's pretty much a followup to Under Siege.Zeus gets wind of Herc getting beaten down and things get crazy from there.

Makes sense.

I am a big fan of mythology, but I've only been reading comics for so long. Stern's Avengers era is from shortly after I was born, let alone when I started reading comics. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff I don't even know about lurking in Marvel's back catalog. Hell, I'm 25 now and I'm only just getting around to reading Thor's entire series, even though he's been my favorite character for about 10 years.

This was my favorite What If? story. My friend had it back when I started collecting and its stuck with me to this day.

I love What If though and i plan to eventually go back and read a bunch of them. Especially now that I'm actually familiar with more of the Marvel Universe than I was back then.

Yeah, I like them very much. Thanks for sharing. Marvel is great.

Hey, welcome to the hype Ford jj!

And I just read Ghost Rider 29... which takes place during the "Rise of the Midnight Sons" storyline but isn't actually in connection to the story. And it really isn't. It's a followup to X-Men/Brood crossover that took place right before the "Rise of the Midnight Sons' storyline and really has nearly no connection at all, save for mentions of Lilith rising and their hunt for those who can take her down... though their hunt is suspended for this issue and Lilith doesn't show up. It can really be completely skipped in the Mightnight Sons storyline itself.

However, that said, if you've ever read the X-men crossover, it's a nice followup to it and is a good story itself in the ongoing Ghost Rider continuity. It deals a bit more with Dan dying than Lilith, which is more of a background story in the Rise of the Midnight Sons, left to be dealt with after Lilith and crew are taken care of in the end.

Good story, good art, good issue.

Good idea, JH! I'm currently reading the 11 issued series of Man-Thing that came out in the early 80's. I've only read issue #1 and #2; but, noticed after issue #3, Chris Claremont took over writing duties, until it was cancelled. It's hard to believe Marvel kept thinking they could make an ongoing series out of Man-Thing, who's just a mindless swamp monster who feeds on fear...but, those first couple issues were nice reads. You almost have to make the focus just as much on the other characters as you do Man-Thing.

That second series is really inexpensive to find. I'm always finding them cheap...especially at comiccons. Plus, you can get it in Essential Man-Thing Vol. 2.

This was the first comic to make me actually tear up. Great read and great Reed.

Ever wonder what Reed would be like without Sue?

:ff: :ff: :ff:

Yeah, that was a classic What If? Story, Franklin. That first What If? series is just soooo good. I've always felt the subsequent series and various special comics that came after just could never compare.

So Reed without Sue looks like Reed when he comes back from the dead? (via late 90's) :)

And I always thought people who tear up at comics were wierd. I never did... until Green Arrow/Black Canary issue 4 I think it was, the issue where Conner was in the hospital and Ollie was reflecting, etc. That issue has made me tear up every single time I read it, and there is absolutely no exaggeration at all. Every. Single. Time.

The idea of Ollie running in there for his son who is dying/braindead and holds him saying 'daddy's hear'.

Man, as a parent, that killed me and still kills me to this day.

Micronauts-1.jpg

was the everloving &^%$#@*!!!

with commander Rann, Bug,( i swear to god DC got Ambush Big from that guy) Biotron, Acroyear, Marionette and Baron Karza. This was around the time when marvel stsrted to try other things besides Superheroes like shogun Warriors , Godzilla and Rom. Man those Toys sucked but this book was great! Killing, Sex and Suspended animation and more killing and Sex! Just the kind of things a young impressionable mind like mine was looking for. Baron Karza was a sick and twisted SOB as and he conquered the mircoverse with our intrepid band of freedom fighters trying to stop him. This was a good ride!

I love Bug but have never been able to find interest in the Micronauts. I really should give them a fair chance some day. I've at least always been interested in the Captain Universe storyline that I hear began in that book.

yeah that Captain Universe started towards the end of the series with if i remember right Steve Dikto doing the Artwork. My favorite was Acroyear ( i always like the strong guy of the team) what was cool was he was a priest and was all "like lets not fight", but then would cut people's head off. I dug Rann also cause he had that Buck Rogers frozen thing going on. He came back to find That Karza had slaughtered the whole royal family except for Marionette. You could probably get back issues cheap or maybe find it in paperback but i recommend it.it was fun, gritty and just cool.

I was an Acroyear fan myself. Did you ever read the X-Men / Micronauts crossover?

:thing: :doom: :thing:

you dug Acroyear too!cool! I knew you were a gentlemen and a scholar Frank!:cwink:

It's not too often a comic can bring me to tears. (Of course, I'm not sure I've ever cried...but, it's where my eyes get a bit moist.) First time..probably God Loves, Man Kills. That Graphic Novel just blew me away. (And, for the record, yes, anything with a child can be very intense, especially when you have children. I just saw Carriers in the theaters, and the part with the little girl who's effected by the virus and dying...very tough to watch.)

Me too!!! My two favorite teams, also. That was an awesome event in the 80's, and my local comic shop even gave me the promotional poster for free.

Micronauts was my favorite comic...and, it could have been even more popular, I think, if Marvel didn't do their Direct Edition treatment with it, making it only available to comic shops and subscription. (Thankfully, I got the subscription.) I loved those Direct Edition comics. (Moon Knight, Kazar, and Micronauts.) They seemed better than the other comics Marvel was putting out.

JH, you should definitely check out Micronauts. I'm not sure about now, but it used to be you could find a full collection dirt cheap on ebay. (Seems like ebay has gotten a lot more expensive, especially with shipping prices going so high.)

I might even have some extras. I'll look around, and if I have time, I can send some issues to you.
