Speaking of Rasicts, did anyone hear the sound bite of John Kerry calling Obama a "Tar Baby"? Priceless, only liberals can get away with it.

And only a conservative can dream it, since Kerry didn't call Obama a tar baby

This racism crap is so stupid; as a African American I dont know why so many people get offended. Ignore it. Its quite obvious we're better people than anybody who holds our skin color color against us; they're not worth the effort or time of even wasting a thought on them.

That said, we all know damn well John McCains campaign isnt racist; even if somehow the people in it are. They would NEVER in a million years even attempt to show that off during a campaign.

Just because Baracks black doesnt mean any unusual word that could be interpreted as a racist comment IS racist; whats funny is Obama himself knows all this debate is for nothing because theres no harm meant.

I heard Obama ate a cracker with his soup today. He's manifesting his desire to devour the white man. Racist!

:cmad: Tron5000 how dare you. The Politically correct term is Saltine

I Felt the same way when Mccain let the guy hold the umbrella during MLKs Birthday.

People are just blowing it out of proportion.

Well said, sir.

I always use the word uppity, and never do I use it to describe black people

Interesting how, every day, you learn that even the most common, flamboyant words are "racist." Then again, everything McCain says is apparently racist, so what the hell do I know.

All I know is, I am not changing my vocabulary, or my views on the word, considering I've never used it in a bigoted sense. And I've never really heard others use it that way, either.

It is "interesting" that we are talking about McCain calling a black man "uppity" and you discount it cause YOU never called a Blackman "uppity."

Using this logic,... anything deemed offensive by others is of no concern to anyone because I myself don't do or say them to targeted individuals.

I can't be bothered because it's a waste of time,... but I at least have the consideration of not using certain words around certain people based on Race, Creed, Color, Gender, or Age.
(Blaim my upbringing - I find out a word or action is offensive to a group I try to avoid it happening with that group - It's not that hard.)

I'm thinking based on NEVER seeing you write the word here until we started typing about it - It stretches belief that you "use it all the time."

Nice try.

I have definitely heard the words "uppity" and "n****r" in the same breath many times before (I had a great uncle from Oklahoma who was very, very racist and said it all the time). It's a pretty old-school insult which may be why it's flying over the heads of some, but I can certainly see why there's suspicion that the choice of words was deliberate.

jag

I find it interesting that in these discussions there are LARGE tracks of people, who have never heard or encountered the topic being chewed on,... yet they will argue hard that they KNOW that it can't be seen in anyway as a slight or insult.

MEH.

Jman just because you have never used "uppity" as a racial slur does not mean that others have not or do not use it in that sense. Uppity is a euphamism or derrogatory slang especially considering how it was used.

Any word can be twisted negatively. It's all in the context that it is used. That does not mean that anytime the word is used it is derogatory. To be honest with you, I have never heard that word being referred to as a racial slur.

Sigh.

If you truly "dont know why so many people get offended" Then I think you need to study more history.

We have "Ignored" it since Slavery ended - and it didn't start getting better until we started activily protesting it.
Now your silly behind rests on the laurels of others who did not "ignore it".

Others who suffered for standing up and saying that "you will not put me in a box and classify me as "less" anymore because I "allow" or "ignore it".

These people Stomped on any HINT that they were being stepped on because as a matter of course EVERY interaction always had SOME POINT where their color was called into it.

Now we have A blackman running for the highest political office in the country,... and the disconnect is that young blacks don't recognize the old phrases which had been used to describe blacks in America FOR CENTURIES who go into areas where some would rather not have them go.

I stand with my original statement that he should have known better and I add that you should too.

Marx don't you live in Ohio? I live in Mississippi and I have to tell you it is used here in the manner that varient and I are referring to.

"Uppity negroes and race agitators are the type a folks that messed up the America" This quote is a statement that was made on a morning talk show today on a country station talk show in my area this morning by a caller.

To the agreement of the radio personalities they were discussing the implications of Obama becoming President.

Just because you have never used a word or had a given derrogatory term directed to you does not mean that it is not used that way.

"Uppity negroes don't seem to know their place" (same caller) the world is big and different people have different experiences. because person "A" has not experienced an event or incident that person "B" has does not make person"B's" experience any less real or hurtful to person "B"

Wouldn't you consider it a good thing that "young blacks don't recognize the old phrases?" I guess I don't understand this.

There are those in the african-american community who have resigned themselves to harming the very cause that they represent in an attempt to remain viable. (Jesse Jackson, Reverend Wright, Al Sharpton.)

This country has largely moved beyond racial lines, despite what some would like to contend. Am I saying that racists and racism do not still exist? Of course not. My point is that group of people are a very vocal minority in our country. And they are hardly representative of the overall picture.

To me, the fact that people no longer recognize the "old phrases" is a good thing. The fact that Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee for President of the United States, and NOT a "black man running for President," is a good thing.

Yes I do live in Ohio Tag, I fail to see how that is relevent.

To set the record straight - I (and Jman) have never said that just because we haven't heard certain words used in certain ways that it isn't possible. Somehow our words have been twisted into something that they're not.

Maybe you've never seen me write it because I think out my responses on these forums. If I were to write how I talk, the words ****, ass hole, **** and *********** would be mentioned in just about every single post I make. Not to mention, it looks better and sounds better when you use the synonyms "presumptuous" or "arrogant."

Maybe I'll start using it on a regular basis:

-Some posters are uppity about their views on Christianity
-My best friend was all uppity because he thought I had a crush on his uppity crush who was even more uppity to think that my friend and I were one big uppity couple
-President Bush is so uppity, he thinks he's the next Harry Truman

etc. etc.

Here's my deal:

IF McCain were 30 years younger I'd have chalked it up as pure innocence. You wouldn't have heard a peep out of my stating how disappointed I was that he would push that button.

JJ had it once but lost sight,
RW is only passing on his experiences in ways that offend whites who don't want to be put in a box,(That made me smile,.. RW gives white america a FRACTION of what they as a group have heaped on black america for decades and they howl about it like he wears a black sheet and hangs white people.)

And sharpton used to be better than this - he's spent so many years chasing justice and looking for the good fight that he's hoarse and spent with folk not really listening to him anymore.

BTW,... Every other phrase coming from the conservative Right has been "Black man running for President"

Peace.

But that's what I'm trying to say V. The Conservative Right is hardly representative of the overall picture of the United States. Neither are Jesse Jackson, Reverend Wright, and Al Sharpton. They all do nothing but stir the pot to promote their own agendas, despite the fact that the country doesn't reflect their extremist views.

what exactly is a "race agitator"??

This is a term used by southerners to describe people from other parts of the country protesting Jim Crowe laws and racial discrimination.

This term was recently used by people describing the protesters that went to Jena Louisiana.
