The Obscure 80's Hair Band Thread

...Ahmet and Dweezil are both pretty accomplished musicians but damn if they haven't done a damn thing with their talent.

Yeah, I remember seeing Dweezil play a few times. He could lay it down right good.

I vaguely remember them, but can't recall any of their music. :o You've succeeded in bringing up an obscure 80's hair band.

You know what I miss most about this era in music? The value placed on musicianship and songwriting. Even the crappiest bands had some excellent musicianship going on in them during that time. The bands today just don't even come close to what these guys could do with their instruments and voices. A friend of mine (who's younger and missed all this crunchy musical goodness in the 80's) was all jacked up about the band Avenged Sevenfold, talking about how incredibly awesome their guitarists were and how they played these really great solos, so I gave them a listen and was stunned at how crappy the guitar playing really was on the few songs he wanted me to hear. The solo's were sh1t, to be honest. I mean, it's great that the long derided guitar solo is finally making a comeback after being banished by nu-metal a-holes, but surely they can do better than this? Maybe we're starting to see a swing of the pendulum back the other way, where musicianship will be revered once again, though. One can only hope.

OK if The Cult was not obscure enough, and I agree thay are at least borderline unobscure - How about W.A.S.P. ?

<I can't spell borderline> :(

Here's a list of some Canadian Bands that were big in the 80's, I'm not sure which would be considered Obscure though:

The Parachute Club
Annimotion
Loverboy
Martha and the Muffins (aka M+M)
Honeymoon Suite
Triumph
Glass Tiger
Platinum Blonde
The Box
One to One
Powder Blues (aka The Powder Blues Band)
Toto
Foreigner
Cheap Trick
Supertramp
The Boomtown Rats
April Wine
Styx
The Alan Parsons Project
Rush
and last but not least TORONTO

Ha, one hilarious band is Loudness from Japan because of the delivery on lines like:

"You make me mad and wild
Well, we're gonna rock and pile."

and

"We're gonna do our best
The best kicks you in the head, alright"

They are totally gonna Rock and Pile.
I guess that's like, sort, pile, they pile their audience members up.

W.A.S.P. was a lot more obscure than The Cult, no doubt. This was a band that was deeply entrenched in the KISS and Alice Cooper school of "shock rock". Who can forget Blackie Lawless (what a great rock and roll name) and his flame-shooting cod-piece or the mock torture of women on stage and throwing raw meat into the audience? W.A.S.P. was supposed to stand for We Are Sexual Perverts, btw. LOL! With songs like "Scream Until You Like It" and "Animal (F**k Like A Beast)", it seems they were out to prove it.

I remember seeing Chris Holmes in "The Decline Of Western Civilization Part II: The Metal Years" and just feeling so sorry for the guy. He was a full-blown alcoholic of epic proportions. Very sad. Some Blackie Lawless trivia for you, he was slated to play the T-1000 in "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" but Ahnuld got him canned because Lawless was "too tall" (he's 6'4").

LOL! Yeah, they were hailed as the "Japanese Van Halen" due to their being formed around Japanese guitar virtuoso Akira Takasaki who, while being an incredible guitarist, played nothing like Eddie Van Halen. They were much heavier than VH and musically had some great riffs. But, the singer sounded like a pissed off Elmer Fudd and their lyrics sometimes made little to no sense.

But....the majority of those aren't even hair (hard rock/metal) bands? There are only a handful on there that are really obscure, anyway, like The Box, Toronto and Martha and the Muffins.

Er, if that's true, someone was sniffing glue.
He would've been sucking in his cheeks the whole time.

see... (I cheated and got the list out of another chat room using google) I wasn't sure which ones would be considered obscure... now I can hunt out pictures and see which of those 3 qualify as "Hair" bands...

Blackie Lawless perfected "Blue Steel" long before Derek Zoolander ever came along.

Tygerz of Pan Tang - They actually were quite good lol.
Queensryche so pretentious it's funny.

My entry: Riot

No, not Quiet Riot. Riot.

Their album Fire Down Under, while sporting some of the worst cover art of all time, is pretty damned fantastic from start to finish.

Standout tracks:
Feel the Same
Don't Bring Me Down
No Lies

Heh. I actually saw them back in the day. They, along with Lesley West's Mountain, opened for Triumph at the Meadowlands. Everybody went nucking futs when the lead singer came onstage and screamed "HERRO NEW JERSEY!!!"

You have to love a band were they lead in to a solo with:

"In fiscal year 1986-87, local, state, and federal governments spent a combined total of 60.6 million dollars on law enforcement.
Federal law enforcement expenditures ranked last in absolute dollars, and accounted for only 6% of all federal spending.
By way of comparison, the federal government spent $24 million more on space exploration, and 43 TIMES more on national defense and international relations than the law enforcement."

Jeez. To borrow a quote, concept bands oughta shampoo my crotch.

Yeah, Queensryche are a bit pretentious, it's true, but damn if they don't have some amazing musical chops to back it up. They really aren't very obscure, either. To this day, it's hard to turn on a classic rock radio station without hearing that damned "Silent Lucidity".

How about Zebra?

Kinda quasi-obscure, I guess. They had some Billboard success... Who's Behind the Door?, Wait Until the Summer's Gone...

I saw them a couple times both here in NJ and also in New Orleans, and they put on an excellent set.

Yeah, PLAS brought them up earlier in the thread. Like I said to him, I just remember hearing "No Tellin' Lies" and thinking "WTF is this crap?". I believe those guys are actually from the Long Island/Jersey area if I'm not mistaken.
