The Obscure Music Thread

The Mars Volta = meh. I saw them live...and thier set was extremely boring. They started off well, but then they played this like...18 minute song that sounded like noise. It was at the Continental Airlines Arene, and almost the whole crowd walked out during their set to get food. I've never seen the outer halls so crowded there, and I've been to several big shows there.

Main thing here is that they were boring. I understand what they were going for, but it didn't work out well. Even a few of my friends who are huge fans were like...bored.

Hmm....I know what you mean with the "18 minute noise song" thing. I hate those....Wilco does that kinda stuff sometimes, and even though I generally like them, I find that stuff hard to listen to. Actually, I find most songs over, maybe, 7 minutes hard to listen to focusedly.

I usually enjoy lenghty songs like that. When I saw Death Cab for Cutie, "Transatlanticism" was maybe one of the most moving times of my life. It was beautiful. And that's maybe 7 minutes of so. Same goes for Something Corporate's "Konstantince, which is almsot 10 minutes.

But The Mars Volta...I don't even think it was one of their long songs. They wre just jamming out for like...20 minutes. And it was boring.

Thank you. Finally someone else notices this. Though I disagree on the quality of the music itself, the lyrics are definitely nothing more than bull**** artistic *********ion. I know droves of people that are always saying "man, they're lyrics are amazing. They're so poetic. It's like Floyd, y'know?". Bull****. They're lyrics are nonsensical and mean absolutely nothing. I can write you a Mars Volta inspired verse right now:

Crescent shaped peanut butter sandwiches under a green moon
running to the bat feces empire on skate up down twice over
in a mortuary with uncle father's aborted kittens

Yeah, I don't mind all songs like that. Echoes by Pink Floyd is 20-something minutes and I think it's brilliant.

Just listening to the last track of Zen Arcade by Husker Du...it's the first album I've heard by them, and this is my first listening, but it's been really good. It's punk from the 80s.

that and my dead uncle.
Have you listened to "De-Loused In The Comatorium" or their new album "Amputechture"? I love "De-Loused In The Comatorium" the most out of the three and I'd probably put "Frances The Mute" at the bottom of the three... but I do love them all. I used to not think much of The Mars Volta. They are a band that you really need to give more than one listen to... and back when I first listened to them I only gave them one chance. I am kicking myself now because I could have seen them and System Of A Down back when they toured. I had friends of mine begging me to go with them too. "De-Loused In The Comatorium" is a masterpiece... and for those who don't like "long" songs then this album would probably be for you. They only have one song over ten minutes I believe. I started giving The Mars Volta albums more of my time and I listened to them more and more after I downloaded "Amputechture" and loved that. I don't know if it's just me... but I really grew to like them more and more after each listen.

well a friend gave their "tremulant"ep when it was like reallllllllly obscure, and I was like, "yeah, this is kind of nice" and then I got de-loused as a gift from another friend (both worked at record stores) and I was like "ok, cool, some good songs some wanna-br prog-rock, I can stand it" but, man, I heard the widow on the radio and I was like "freaking sweet!!!!"and i got the album, neddless to say the album itself is cedric singing about "earwax scars at the house where tu espiritu crece" so, no...thanks cedric, but I'll pass, and St. Of Sinners nailed it, it's pretty *********ory, not run of the mill catholic boy shame *********ion, but webcam/look at my sexy body sort of *********ion, the kind that you really don't wan't to put down on a cd and keep for posterity.

who knows, maybe amputechture is better.

but alas

it is called "amputechture":(

Anyone ever listen to "The Blood Brothers". The only thing I can think of to say about them is "interesting".

Good way to describe them.

Just listened to 'You're A Woman I'm A Machine' by Death From Above 1979. Just to confirm what other people have said, they are indeed awesome.

The Blood Brothers are trash.

The Blood Brothers opened for Coheed and Cambria and got booed after their set. Then Coheed came on and rocked my socks off....shoes still on...socks folded neatly beside me.

These two albums are my favorite "obscure music"

New - Dinosaur Jr. - 90s alt. rock band.
Albums: Greem Mind

Ry Cooder - Eclectic (both musically and instrumentally) folk musician. Career spans from 60s/70s to now.
Albums: Paradise And Lunch, Chicken Skin Music

I honestly don't think a lot of these bands are too osbscure...

Try Boards of Canada people...

It's true a lot of them aren't really obscure, but it depends on your circle. For example, some of my recommendations (Pixies, for example) aren't really too obscure, but absolutely no one I know listens to them, or probably has ever even heard of them, for that matter.

I don't remember what I mentioned in my other post(s) on this thread so some of these could be duplicates. Anyway, some are more obscure than others...and some are downright famous in Austin, but possibly not elsewhere...

Okay, I love The Mars Volta. I have heard they suck live but I can't comment on that because I haven't seen them live myself. But thier albums are brilliant feats of pushing the envelope in a rock band setting. Jam bands have kept part of that '60s/early '70s vibe going but The Mars Volta added the other important part...acid rock. I've seen the word *********ory used. I don't see it that way. The Mars Volta just don't limit themselves. And about Cedric's vocals and lyrics and such. His voice is just another instrument and he uses it that way. He reminds me of a male Diamanda Galas in some ways.

I don't mind screamo, in fact I like a lot of it. But they were just awful.

If you ever wanna listen to obscure music listen to "Gogol Bordello" It's gypsy music/punk rock. I went to see them live the other day and their live show is 10 times better than their music and their music is fantastic.

www.myspace.com/gogolbordello

and the other band that I reccommend to you all is a band called Sonic Boom Six. I first discovered when I went to a gig they played at. At first I didn't know what to think of them. They are a mix between Hip-hop, punk, ska and reggae. Think of The Clash mixed with The Specials with a hint of political hip-hop.

www.myspace.com/sonicboomsix

I expect you to listen to these bands because they are awesome :D
