The Obscure Music Thread

It's true a lot of them aren't really obscure, but it depends on your circle. For example, some of my recommendations (Pixies, for example) aren't really too obscure, but absolutely no one I know listens to them, or probably has ever even heard of them, for that matter.

First of all, who hasn't heard of the Pixies?

Secondly, i'm talking obscure categorically. Take another look at my list.

Indy prog music, not too obscure by todays standards.

Post-modernist moog music, obscure!

Since I think the lot of you don't listen to Asian po/rock, I'd think that pretty obscure...

The Mars Volta = meh. I saw them live...and thier set was extremely boring. They started off well, but then they played this like...18 minute song that sounded like noise. It was at the Continental Airlines Arene, and almost the whole crowd walked out during their set to get food. I've never seen the outer halls so crowded there, and I've been to several big shows there.

Main thing here is that they were boring. I understand what they were going for, but it didn't work out well. Even a few of my friends who are huge fans were like...bored.

I saw them live as well, opening up for the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They were terrible live, and I like quite a bit of their recorded material. Their jams were largely very uninteresting, Cedric's voice GRATES after the first two songs in a live setting (he didn't even know the words he was singing and had a cheat chart to read the words off of, to boot and he danced like he was both trying to badly imitate James Brown and had shart himself severely and was trying to keep it from running down his leg simultaneously), and they didn't even acknowledge the audience once during their entire set. I get that they're going for the "artsy psychedelic prog-rock" thing, but it just came off as pretentious and self-absorbed. Even the RHCP sound guys didn't like this band because they gave them one of the crappiest sound mixes I've ever heard for an opening band.

Okay, I love The Mars Volta. I have heard they suck live but I can't comment on that because I haven't seen them live myself. But thier albums are brilliant feats of pushing the envelope in a rock band setting. Jam bands have kept part of that '60s/early '70s vibe going but The Mars Volta added the other important part...acid rock. I've seen the word *********ory used. I don't see it that way. The Mars Volta just don't limit themselves. And about Cedric's vocals and lyrics and such. His voice is just another instrument and he uses it that way. He reminds me of a male Diamanda Galas in some ways.

hmm, as far as voice used as an instrument, some people have done it, and done it very well, Lisa Gerard of dead can dance has done wonders with her voice (and can pull it off live). as far as the mars volta "not limiting themselves" i guess it's a matter of taste, a lot of it seems like drug induced filler noise, not that there's anythig wrong with that (J spaceman does very good things with durg induced filler noise) it's just that it seems too mateurish sometimes, like manufactured spontaneity, sort of like "well, we're the mars volta so we must include distorted bass tapping and feedback noise over double time drumming, it's what we do":o

Speaking of Diamanda Galas, check her music out. Some of it I don't care for but even so, I can recognize her talent. I've seen some reviews that say she's no better than Yoko Ono, screaching and the like. But at least Diamanda can sing in key and in tune. It's worth checking out at least. I don't know if I'd buy any of her albums except for the one she did with John Paul Jones though.

If you ever wanna listen to obscure music listen to "Gogol Bordello" It's gypsy music/punk rock. I went to see them live the other day and their live show is 10 times better than their music and their music is fantastic.

www.myspace.com/gogolbordello

I expect you to listen to these bands because they are awesome :D[/size]

I saw them open for a Cake Tour  lots of energy :)

these guys aren't too obscure anymore, but Band of Horses are a really good band.

also, Apollo Up! is pretty decent.

Chin Up Chin Up is one of my favorite "new" bands.

They're good...but My Morning Jacket did it first.

a lot of bands did it first. mmj is good too, though.

Wesley Willis, Daddy of Rock n' Roll. Sadly, he is no longer with us. Wesley was a 300 lb. schizophrenic man from Chicago who was on again off again homeless. He liked to headbutt people. He sang brilliantly simple yet often profound and often vulgar songs accompanied with only his keyboard and it's built-in drum sounds. For a short period of time he did have a real band that he called The Wesley Willis Fiasco. He was also a visual artist and drew suprizingly good scenes of urban Chicago. His actual albums are hard to find these days but you can order compilations from Amazon or other places.

suck a hyena's ass.

I saw someone mention The Blood Brothers, I used to love them.. now I barely listen to it because that's the new formula for s**tty bands to copy these days and after a while it gets old.
Anyone ever hear of The Number 12 Looks Like You? Don't bother, they're f**king terrible.

Anyway, onto some bands you should check out..
(Mostly) Instrumental:
.ISIS - Post rock with metal elements sprinkled in.. (incredible live)
.Do Make Say Think - Jazz infused post rock
.All My Friends Are Dead
.Mogwai

Metal/"Hardcore"/"Screamo":
.THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN - Not for everyone, i'll leave it at that. (once again, absolutely awe-inspiring live show)
.HORSE The Band - Again, not for everyone.. "nintendo-core".
.Alexisonfire - Not that obscure anymore, they're picking up a good fanbase, but that doesn't mean thier music isn't quality stuff.

Also check out City And Colour, it's thier guitarist's acoustic solo project. The whole band is really nice and they get better every time I see them.

yeah...I use that band when I can't sleep, it's like 18 glasses or warm milk concentrated into sludgy ten minute blip-fests.

True, I just put them up there cause they've been around longer than most.
Plus, if you filter through the sweeps, bleeps and creeps.. there's some damn good stuff.

I like "hunted by a freak" the video makes me cry :csad: but young team (the whole album) puts me to sleep. C'mon die young is good though, and Mr. Beast is pretty okay.

I find C'mon Die Young to be their most boring album, with my favorite being Rock Action. (Though I also do love Mr. Beast and most of Young Team, Mogwai Fear Satan is one of my favorite songs ever)

Young Team is my favorite album because of Mogwai Fear Satan.

great song.

"EP+6" is probably my fave by them. "Young Team", "CODY" and "Happy Songs For Happy People" are also awesome.

Tim by The Replacements is pretty good. They're an 80s kinda-punk band fronted by Paul Westerburg.

I listened to Come On Die Young by Mogwai the othe day. The first track, "Punk Rock", I liked, but the rest I just kinda drifted away from it a bit. It wasn't bad, I just didn't find it very interesting. Same with Godspeed! You Black Emperor's Lift Your Skinny Fists.... I gave 'em both a few listens, but they just didn't draw me in.
