^Actually wouldn't this movie determine a sequel? I mean if people don't buy into him as a stand alone they won't do a sequel. Thor 2 was already announced before Avengers because people enjoyed the first movie. Unless somehow the Avengers is the Captain America show which I doubt.
People's opinions of the character will be fresh from The Avengers though, they'll remember Cap more from that than his solo movie. Besides, it'll probably take place in present day.

Despite, what RT suggests the reviews are mostly positive, and there are other factors that play into Box Office numbers. I think if Marvel believes that there is an interest with the general public in seeing a sequel regardless of how it performs we will get one.

Well yeah I know that there are many outside factors that are hard to gauge but it just feels unlikely to me the Avengers movie will boost his popularity even more than his own stand alone movie. I mean Cap is the leader of the Avengers but I could easily see Stark taking a good chunk of that role because the GA like him the best. So unless Cap does something extremely awesome that blows everyone away in May, I feel this will determine the possibility of a sequel.

The problem is they are having trouble finding any more, which is why it is taking so long.:woot:

Re-reading THR's review: It's actually a Positive review!

No wonder it has a 7/10 Metacritic score.

RottenTomatoes labelled it rotten though.

If you take a World War II movie, dial up the action with contemporary visual effects and CGI, then give your hero a double dose of steroids and human growth hormones, you wind up in the movie/comic book world of Captain America: The First Avenger. The movie is, of course, Marvel Comics' and Paramount’s filmization of Joe Simon and Jack Kirby’s Super Soldier series that first appeared in comic books in March 1941, well before Pearl Harbor, so understandably this is one superhero movie that demands that the first movie at least be a period one. So you get an alternative WWII, say like Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds -- only without all that dialogue and enough oversized vehicles and outlandish sets to fit its beefcake hero.
Captain America delivers comic book action that should satisfy Captain America’s fans, old and new, while Chris Evans’ no-nonsense yet engaging portrayal of a man who doesn’t know how to back away from a fight may cause young women to swoon and young men to join a gym. Yet the film will leave others wondering -- especially following the film’s long gestation and marketing buildup -- “Is this all there is?”

For in terms of even recent films, Captain America lacks the deft touch, appealing character interaction and sophisticated storytelling skills of Marvel Comics’ X-Men: First Class. And let’s not even bother to compare this to Christopher Nolan’s Batman series. (and this is the reason RottenTomatoes dinged this as 'rotten').

Sticking to its simplistic, patriotic origins, where a muscular red, white and blue GI slugging Adolf Hitler in the jaw is all that’s required, Captain America trafficks in red-blooded heroes, dastardly villains, classy dames and war-weary military officers. There is no ambiguity here. Nor does any superhero question his powers. No, sir, not in this war and not with these determined heroes.

Director Joe Johnston makes certain that amid all the retro-futuristic nonsense, his nucleus of actors playing SSR heroes fits well together. Evans nicely underplays the role, giving a Gary Cooper-ish air to the young hero who just wants to do the right thing. Atwell is a perfect throwback to that era: Darkly gorgeous yet tough as nails, she would look just at home painted on a bomber fuselage as she is slugging a solider who gives her lip.
Jones knows how to make every moment of screen time count with these grumpy and gruff characters he now plays, but Stan and Cooper aren’t so lucky: Their characters came out a little too thin in Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely‘s screenplay. Meanwhile, Weaving is very one-notish as the villain, which leaves it to Toby Jones, as his sidekick, to add a little nuance to Nazi villainy.

The tech team brilliantly supports the comic book action without any single department showing off or adding unnecessary flourishes. A special tip of the hat to Anna B. Sheppard’s costumes and Rick Heinrichs’ production design for maintaining enough period flavor so the production doesn’t go too overboard.
This is a Positive Review.

7/10 score says it all.

I can only imagine what would have happened had Cap and GL switched release dates. Critics seem moody this year.

I undestand what you are saying, but sometimes a movie like the Avengers could be used as a launching pad to reinvigorate intersts in the character. I am not saying that the Captain America solo movie, will not create enough interest in his character, because I believe it will. However, the Avengers movie kind of keeps people excited about him. I know this is kind of off topic, but wouldn't it be amazing if the Avengers Movie does so well with the public that it creates enough interest in a sequel to the Incredible Hulk. I know I am grabbing at straws here, but let me have my fantasy. :woot:

^Cap would have lost a good chunk of money with Cars 2 and TF3 coming ahead of it. Of course Paramount would never do that to themselves.

I'm seeing it at midnight regardless. I just am anxious to see Joblo's review, they're usually spot on whenever it comes to their reviews.

I think they're just collecting some now or not bothering for a while. FWB has been at 44% with 9 reviews for just about as long, if not longer, than Cap has had 62%.

They should check with the Italian reviews for that matter, I hear there are some negative ones over there as well. :yay:

Isn't there still a premiere at Comic-Con tonight, or is that somewhere else? Because I keep hearing about a premiere somewhere on twitter. I'm not too worried though, this will be getting a lot of my money regardless of reviews. And I'm expecting RT score to be somewhere in the high 70s or low 80s.

Hell, I say look on twitter for a better reaction than RT at this point.

With the rave reviews this is getting from fans, and the immense delay in the positive reviews, it's easy to imagine WB pulling strings.

I think it's clear that this movie is going to be good. The criticisms of this movie by those who scored it 'rotten' are so light and vague that there isn't much to fear here. We aren't hearing about a bad script, bad acting, and bad special effects like Green Lantern. Like the reviews for all Marvel movies, they contradict each other and the criticisms are pretty minor. That clown from Variety (who somehow was a fan of Hop, Fanboys, Step Up 2, and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning) from instance says it's bland. Other reviews say it was exciting and fun.

I must say that I don't really buy into fanboy conspiracies but this Rotten Tomatoes thing is kind of unusual.

Agreed. I'm looking at Twitter feedback, which is essentially enthusiastic to outright LOVING Cap, and they really do contradict the worst of the reviews, which is Variety at this point. And it's literally... mild.

So, y'know... hope for stronger reviews, and even if they come in or not, go see the movie if you want to.

So much for that bullcrap about 'no rotten movie has ever made it back up to positive before'.

Which I'm pretty sure wasn't true to begin with, anyways.

Looking good now. 7.3 Avg after 21 reviews.
