First Avenger The Official Captain America: The First Avenger Review Thread! - Part 1

I rate this movie 5/5. I especially like the scene when Steve Rogers comes back with the soldiers after freeing them!

I loved this movie. Everyone did a great job. This is my favorite "Avengers Build-Up to the movie". I find this movie a bit entertaining. The only thing was that it felt a bit fast, its just a minor. But I loved this movie so much. I cant wait for the sequel so badly
I felt that too, I wish they would have made it a 3 hour film. I REALLY hate this TWO HOUR crud they keep using as an excuse

The first time I saw it in the theater I was let down, Cap was a childhood favorite and I was just expecting something different... I felt like world war 2 itself wasn't given its justice and it way overemphasized hydra... But upon multiple viewings this movie is highly rewatchable and quite likable. Chris Evans turned in a fine performance on a character that is easy to get so wrong.

I watched this for the first time in awhile last night(having myself an Avengers marathon so I can go see Thor 2). I originally rated this a 10/10, but I think I'm gonna bring it down to 9/10. The shots in the beginning of Chris Evans' head on a skinny body were poorly done. There were some good shots of it, but some places it looked so bad. Not sure why I didn't see it before. I also felt like the build up to the final battle with Red Skull was a little rushed.

Other than that, this is still a solid film. Can't wait for TWS!

Positives:
-Evans as Cap. So many funny/charming/heroic moments
-Peggy/Cap chemistry
-Red Skull / Zola are hilariously entertaining
-A few cool action shots
-Great climax with Cap sacrificing himself.

Negatives:
-At times it feels HFR. Maybe it's the digital cam shots. Whatever it is, I'm not a fan.
-Underwhelming action
-Set design / lighting. A lot of indoor scenes feel very sterile.
-Howling Commandos are lame.
-The third act overall loses steam.
-Some poor integration of CG backdrops.
-The ending is tonally awkward. ("I had a date."/ jingoistic marching music!)

However, the charm of this movie prevails for me. 7/10.

My MCU rankings:
Thor (7/10)
Captain America (7/10)
Iron Man (6.5/10)
Iron Man 3 (6.5/10)
The Avengers (6/10)
Iron Man 2 (5.5/10)
Thor: The Dark World (5/10)
The Incredible Hulk (4.5/10)

I was a huge fan of this movie when I first saw it, but I've come to appreciate it even more over time. It holds up better with multiple viewings than Iron Man, Spider-man, or even Batman Begins. I'll say it, and you can feel free to flame away: it's the best super hero origin film ever.

Watched this again last night. While I'm sure this has been discussed before, I'm gonna bring it up again. I'm so amazed at how this film was influenced from Star Wars. So many things in the movie that make you think of Star Wars.

Steve is basically someone who wants to go and fight in the war, while Luke is someone who wants to join the academy

Steve meets Dr. Abraham Ersinkie and becomes a mentor to him, while Luke meers Obi-Wan and becomes a mentor to him.

Peggy says something along the lines of "A New Hope"

The Catwalk scene with Captain America and Red Skull

The chase at the end when they were breaking into the final Hydra base was inspired by the speeder chase in Return Of The Jedi

And also the guns on Red Skull's ship looked like a R2 unit.

I had noticed some of these things before, then after watching it for the hundredth time, some more things stood out.

I just love how old school this film feels.

It's like watching an Indy film or a (good) Indy knock-off like The Phantom.

It has an earnest clarity in tone that's refreshing. While I think the pacing is off during the last act, I'd say it's still right up there with Batman Begins, Iron and The Amazing Spider-Man as best origin film.
