The Official Civil War Thread

I read Civil War: The Confession.

Now I remember why I love Bendis's work.

really? i thought it was a little subpar. now, civil war's luke cage issue of new avengers reminded me that bendis can be as good as anyone.

see...i'm kinda the opposite. I didn't really find anything super special about Luke's New Avengers issue.

Perhaps I'll re-read it.

Alright then..bottom line. Are people happy with Civil War,or were they dissapointed with the end result?Or were you never happy at all?

I was never happy and I'm getting less happy all the time. Progressively, with every issue and tie-in, I was angrier and angrier. I'm glad Marvel didn't get any of my money for this and I'm appalled that it sold so well overall.

My reactions ranged from generally unhappy to outright disgusted.

But there are some things that I thought they did pretty well. Not nearly enough to save the event as a whole, but they are there. For example I thought that Tony's paternal relationship with Peter, while twisted, was realistic. Tony would completely try to buy in Peter like that, and Peter -- at least the Peter that Bendis and JMS have been writing -- would completely buy into it.

The Young Avengers' involvement was generally well-depicted.

The X-Men finally grew some balls and stood up to their fascist human overlords for a change, both in the main event and in Civil War: X-Men.

how? i thought the x-men stayed OUT of the civil war

In my mind, that's exactly how they stood up to them. They told both sides to fck off..."Where were you when our babies were burning?" The human superheroes were never really there for the X-Men when they needed them in the past, and now all the human superheroes are being treated exactly like how mutants are treated. Karma is an icy she-wolf.

And, in Civil War: X-Men, the original four living X-Men finally found where their testicles had been hiding and fought back against the fascist O*N*E that had been lording over their home -- after more or less a whole year of kowtowing to the prcks -- the end result of which is that the X-Mansion no longer needs to resemble an internment camp.

I was happy with it. I guess. I have said it before and I'll say it again. Marvel gave us (fans) exactly what we have needed and wanted for a while now. A "superhero" (I put it in quatation marks because apparently Mistress still thinks he is) that we love to hate right now. Tony Stark. Iron Man. Or whatever you want to call him right now, I actually love him this way. I mean think about it, this is what Bat-Man would or could be if he were "bad", or really "bad" is still a state of mind for some people. I have never wanted to read a Iron Man comic more in my life than right now. And this is what Marvel wants, his movie is about to come out (along with Spidey's and his last stand against tony was awesome, along with the fact that he is now in the black suit, is this coincedence.... I think not) and they want us to watch this movie and while or after the movie is over and tell or wives (like me) or our girlfirends, "yeah he's all great now but let me tell you what he does later on in his career."

Civil War was a major dissapointment upon retrospect. It started out pretty strong but near the end it become SO stereotypical that I saw plotlines coming from miles away. Its like Marvel didn't even try at the end.

But the quality of art and presentation in Civil War was amazing. I really wish that the story line was just as good.

Bingo!

I didn't even want to read it. Someone lent some of them to me and I got hooked. I thought it was really good up until Issue #7. That was the most anti-climatic went out with a wimper ending ever! I wanted to shoot Cap myself. Yay sniper!!! :cmad:

Actually, Luke Cage in New Avengers reminded me just why I don't think he can play leader when he's playing insecure.

"Show some respect!" Where I would have said, "Keep your troops in line through fear, Tony."

I'm never happy, period. :(

Ditto.

Agreed. The mutants basically stated that since the humans never really took interest in their welfare, why should THEY take interest in humans? (Though, at the same time, it was petty and childish, as it doesn't give Tony a reason to help them either. If they were the better people, they would have at least done SOMETHING. Or at least stated how it felt like the MRA or something.)

But I never really got why O*N*E* was there. It wasn't like they really protected them. More or less showing that they felt the mutants would retaliate or something. Some show of trust.

But like I said, trust is a two way street.

Wait, so Cap won!? WTH!? Is this an actual turn in Marvel comics or did they cancel out the entire event as it never actually happened?

umm caps dead.. he lost. and there has been a huge turn in marvel since he lost.. o.0 where you been?

Anyone appreciate the irony of the thread's creator knowing absolutely nothing about the topic of the thread itself?

yes i wonder whats so wrong with super -heroes working for /with local law enforcement? after all not every super-heroes have powers useful to the feds

I think, maybe maybe not, the thing people don't like is that it brings the Marvel Universe back from being a really out there fantasy world were super heroes exist and brings them closer to the real world we are in right now.
It sort of interupts the Marvel Universe that came before it, sort of puts the limits of reality into it.
But that is something Marvel has been doing its whole life (since they started doing superhero comics). They did what DC started but instead of bland authority figures setting examples Marvel introdcued the idea that regular people (like you or me) could be superheroes. And even as heroes we would still have all the problems everyone has in day to day life.

So now the Superheroes of Marvel, who in the real world would be going through stuff like this (Government trying to control and get heroes to go away or work for them), have to deal with real world problems.
I think its Marvel's way to try and pull in the reigns a little.

I think, but I can't speak for anyone but me, the reason that some might not like it is because it interupts the superhero world
and
because it created such a massive cammotion in Marvel and almost everyone (the heores) is so hesitant. Kicking and screaming along the way. Even the people enforcing it and doing it sort of negativly, it feels to me.

Wow, the ending was a major dissapointment...
I can't believe Cap stuck his tail between his legs, sure he saw the error of his ways, but the registration act is and was always total crap.
What I loved about the storyline are all the deep parallels this stuff had with modern society, things like the patriot act, guantanamo bay, and the confusion between being a patriot, and being a mindless sheep.
I hope those and other messages got threw to people.

They certainly wiped out a lot of damn people in this, specially Punisher killing all these lame brain villains lol.

I didn't read the ghost rider tie ins, what he contribute?
